Princess Garfield, is the most amazing cat! Besides being beautiful(The black on her eyelids and lips are her freckles , so don't try a wipe it off like her foster mom did.) , she is playful, very loving, and a purr machine. She came into the shelter very sick and malnourished. She has been in a foster home since Jan 19, while there it was realized that she was a senior cat at least 10 years old and that she needed a dental cleaning really bad and ended up needing all of her teeth pulled, except 2. Having only 2 teeth doesn't slow her down eating. The shelters Vet did X-ray of her stomach and found out that her stomach was in awful shape. She was put on prescription food, which she refused to eat (dry and wet). So she only eats 9 Lives Pate wet food. 1 can spilt up for 3 feedings a day. The shelters Vet, believes she has what is known as Feline Herpesvirus. (Her normal issues are watery eyes and sneezing. She gets 1/8tsp of Lysine mixed in her wet food on Tues and Fri.) But, the last couple of months she has had to be on Doxy, which is an antibiotic. If you are interested in adopting her, just remember she will need, medical care the rest of her life. I have added info at the bottom of this memo. She has gained over 5lbs and looks and feels so much healthier now. One of the things that makes Princess Garfield amazing is, she gets along with all dogs and cats she meets. Her foster family have dogs ranging in size from 145lbs to 9lbs and adult cats. The first night in her foster home she went right up to the dogs and wanted to love on them and as for the cats she wanted to be all of their friends. One of them would hiss at her and she just ignored him and went about her business. She loves to play/wrestle with one of her foster brothers, Cedar the cat. She has been "foster Gramma", to foster kittens in the house. So she would love a home that has a friendly fur sibling for her to play with. Her foster family fell in love with her, but couldn't adopt her due to having so many animals already.She likes to be curled up in her favorite humans lap and loves to give her human face bops with her nose. She loves to be petted and for you to rub her face. She will give you love bite cause she is so happy. She's not big on getting picked up and carried around. She prefers to sleep/lay on the cardboard cat scratcher then soft cat beds. (she will go home with her circle cardboard scratcher) After living on the streets for who knows how long, she wants to eat everything she smells and sees. With that being said, she will try to get human food when ever possible. Her foster dad says, she has no manners. Her foster mom says, well what do you expect after almost starving to death. So when it was time for the humans to eat, Princess Garfield was put into another room. Her foster family says, that is her only bad trait, if you can call it that.She is litter boxed trained. What Is Feline Herpesvirus?Feline herpesvirus (FHV) is a contagious virus that can cause severe upper respiratory problems.1 FHV is most commonly spread by direct contact with infected objects and cats, sharing food and litter boxes, and transmission from mother to kitten. Essentially, FHV causes upper respiratory infections and cat flu in cats of all ages but can be especially harmful to kittens who haven't been vaccinated yet.Once a cat is infected, they will remain infected for the entirety of its life, making them a life-long carrier. For most cats, carrying FHV won't cause problems, and they may not be a risk to others when they're not shedding the virus. However, some cats will continue to shed the virus intermittently over their lifespans, especially when stressed or when their immune system is weak.1. Feline herpes is common among cats, and up to 97% of cats are exposed to the virus.2 The most susceptible cats are young cats and those with weakened immune systems. FHV causes a lifelong infection in most exposed cats, and a little more than half of the cats will shed the virus when stressed.2. Once infected, cats will carry the virus for life.After your cat has become infected with FHV, they will carry the virus for their entire life because the virus lives in the nerve cells.1 Infected cats are essentially life-long carriers, but they typically don't experience many health problems or pose a risk to other cats. Unfortunately, other cats will shed the virus periodically and develop signs of infection, including eye problems,After the cat becomes a carrier, they can get flare-ups that will eventually clear up on their own. Many cats will have bouts of upper respiratory problems and eye diseases, such as conjunctivitis in cats.2 Unfortunately, these flare-ups can also lead to death in some cases if the cat has a coexisting health condition.3. Most cats have an active infection for a few daysOnce a cat becomes infected by FHV, they may have an active infection with mild symptoms for 5 to 10 days or more severe infection for up to six weeks.3 Most symptoms occur within two to five days, during which is how long it takes the virus to incubate. During this time, the cat can infect other cats.As we've mentioned, many cats won't shed the disease again or experience any symptoms. However, some cats, when stressed, might shed FHV periodically throughout their lives. During their shedding period, they are infectious to other cats. If your cat has FHV, they may show signs of respiratory infection when the virus is shedding and active again. Feline Herpesvirus SymptomsFeline herpesvirus causes upper respiratory symptoms and eye problems. Cats with herpes virus can have mild to severe symptoms, including:FeverSneezingConjunctivitisNasal inflammationRunny noseClear discharge from nose and eyesLoss of appetite These symptoms typically clear in a few days to a few weeks, depending on their severity. Because the upper respiratory symptoms of FHV are similar to allergies, it can be difficult to diagnose based on symptoms alone. For example, if your cat is sneezing, they could be allergic to pollen. Additionally, conjunctivitis in cats can be caused by allergies, so pet parents might not realize their kitten or cat has feline herpesvirus.
