Story
Nine year old O'Malley came to me as an adult to be a companion for my cat who'd recently lost his companion. While O'Malley is a smart, handsome, gregarious cat, he's not up to being my shy cat's companion. He prefers people and tolerates dogs and cats if they don't want to play or cuddle. He's not aggressive, he hisses when his boundaries are pushed. After settling in to my home O'Malley was allowed outdoors for the first time in his life; this was ideal for him. He climbed trees and fences, lounged on low roofs and enjoyed pretending to hunt (he's too fat to catch anything). He visited all the neighbors on the block who remarked how friendly he was. When I discovered that an unsavory character in the neighborhood fed him and let him in their home even after I requested they not do this, I began keeping both cats in the house and O'Malley is heartbroken. I think he would thrive as a part of a family (I'm on my own and very quiet).

Story
Meet Casper, a 4-month-old male Domestic Medium Hair.Casper and his sister arrived at the adoption center under-socialized. They have been in a foster home that understands their need for personal space and that has started socialization gradually. The foster has let Adoption Center staff know that Casper is in love with their cat and they think that Casper would like a feline companion. In the time that he has been at the foster's house he has started to come out of his shell, but still does not like to be held or have attention thrown at him. If you want a companion that wont be under you feet Casper is the one. Please remember that Casper is a kitten and kitten behavior comes with the package. They need lots of toys and places to scratch to learn good scratching habits. They also need patience as they finesse their litter box skills in a new home they are unfamiliar with. This pet is available for adoption at the Yakima Humane Society adoption center. If you recognize this animal please contact the adoption center at 509-457-6854.If you are interested in adopting this pet please fill out an adoption questionnaire at www.yakimahumane.org. A Yakima Humane Society staff member will contact you once your questionnaire has been received. Adopters are welcome to visit the adoption center Monday-Saturday.A Picture says 1000 words...right? While an animal's picture draws interest, the reality is that as a potential adopter most people would like as much information as possible about a pet. The Yakima Humane Society is an open admission shelter. What does this mean? Over 90% of the pets at the adoption center arrive as strays, no history of behavior or medical care is known. Adding a pet to your family is a big responsibility. Please research carefully and remember that adoption is life saving. Adopt Don't Shop.

Story
Meet Alex,Alex and 13 other cats/kittens were brought to the Yakima Humane Society by Yakima animal control due to a hoarding situation. Cats that come from hoarding situations have spent most of their lives with other cats and many times have had very little contact with people. They can be fearful in new situations, especially when meeting new people and are usually not use to a litter box or carrier. However with time, patience, and play therapy, these cats will experience a reduction in their stress and become a part of the family. The best way to help them adjust to their new home is to set them up somewhere in your house that is small, like a bathroom. In this room, provide everything the cat will need; food, water, a litter box, a bed, and toys. Visit every day, several times a day, doing positive things when with the cat, like offering high value treats or engaging in play. As they starts to become more comfortable, and are seeking attention, you can then let them out into the rest of your house. Start with another small area of your house though and build up to giving her total access. If you are interested in adopting this pet please fill out an adoption questionnaire at www.yakimahumane.org. A Yakima Humane Society staff member will contact you once your questionnaire has been received. Adopters are welcome to visit the adoption center Monday-Saturday.
