To adopt, go to: http://www.mendingspirits.org/apply-to-adopt.html Meet Lucie – A Little Dog with a Big Heart When we first met Lucie, we thought she was a Jack Russell Terrier mix. Her energy, intelligence, and curiosity certainly fit the bill! But thanks to her original adoption paperwork, we learned she’s actually a Treeing Feist—a true working dog with a big personality packed into a small body. Treeing Feists were bred to hunt and “tree” small game, which means they are alert, intelligent, driven, and expressive. They use their voices to communicate, and Lucie is no exception—she can be vocal, especially when she’s excited, alerting you to something interesting, or eager to join in the action. Because of this (and her working-dog instincts), Lucie is not well suited for apartment or rental living and will thrive in a home that understands and appreciates these natural behaviors. Lucie strongly reflects her breed traits. She’s curious, people-focused, and always ready to engage with the world around her. While she enjoys play and outdoor adventures, she also has a wonderful off-switch and is happy to relax once her needs are met. A home that can provide structure, enrichment, and regular outdoor time will help Lucie shine. Lucie came to us after her previous owner had to move into a nursing home, and her family wasn’t able to keep her. It’s clear she was deeply loved—she’s house-trained, crate-trained, food-motivated, and has excellent house manners. She’ll sit by the door when she needs to go outside and prefers to keep her people within sight at all times. Lucie enjoys playing with her larger foster brother but prefers calmer, respectful play. True to her Treeing Feist roots, she loves exploring the yard, going on long sniffy walks, and engaging her senses. She also happens to be a total water girl and happily splashes whenever she gets the chance! Her short brindle-and-white coat and expressive ears make her as charming as she is striking. Some things to know about Lucie: No cats or small animals – strong prey drive typical of Treeing Feists Can be vocal, especially when alerting Best with a calmer dog companion  Loves water, outdoor time, and exploration Needs a fenced yard  From Lucie: “Things have changed a lot for me lately, and I’ll admit—I’ve been a little unsure. But I’m not letting it stop me from having fun! I love racing around the yard, going for walks, and seeing what this new world has to offer. When play gets too rowdy, I just find my person for some reassurance. Inside, I’m happy to curl up, chew a bone, or keep watch out the window. I may have something to say now and then—but it’s all part of who I am. I’m ready for my next adventure—with a forever family of my own.” If Lucie sounds like the perfect match for your home and heart—and you’re excited to share life with a smart, vocal, working-breed Treeing Feist—we’d love to introduce you!       June 22, 2026, 10:27 pm

Story
Zeus came to BENCHS through no fault of his own. His previous owner was experiencing housing difficulties and made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could find a stable home. Zeus enjoys just about any kind of treat and isn't particularly picky about flavors. He is housetrained and does a great job letting his people know when he needs to go outside. He understands words like "outside" and "potty" and is reported to be very reliable with his bathroom habits. Zeus sleeps comfortably in a kennel at night, though his previous owner felt he would likely do just fine sharing a bed or relaxing elsewhere in the home. He rides well in the car and enjoys being included in adventures. Like many dogs, Zeus can be a little nervous during thunderstorms or fireworks. He has also been known to reverse sneeze after drinking water, which was reported to be normal for him. At the shelter, Zeus struggled a bit with the transition and stress of a new environment. Because of that, he may alarm bark when meeting new people for the first time. He has very much earned his honorary Chihuahua card and has the classic Chihuahua temperament: devoted to his people, suspicious of strangers until they prove themselves worthy, and never afraid to share his opinions. Once Zeus realizes he is safe and gets to know someone, he forms bonds quickly and deeply. The Zeus who knows you is affectionate, silly, vocal, and full of personality. He enjoys being close to his people and loves attention from those he trusts. He would do best in a quieter home without a lot of commotion, where he can settle in at his own pace and build confidence. While he doesn't seem particularly picky about toys, we have learned a few favorites during his stay at the shelter. Zeus loves sprawling out on big, comfy dog beds and has a soft spot for plush stuffed animals. Few things make him happier than a cozy place to nap and a stuffed toy nearby. He walks fairly well on a leash. He may pull a little at times but overall is an enjoyable walking companion. He has primarily been walked using a collar rather than a harness. He enjoys affection, especially scratches behind his ears and pets down the middle of his back. While he can be a bit sensitive about having his ears handled, his previous owner noted that this improved as he became more comfortable and trusting with people. He is comfortable being picked up by people he knows well. Around the house, Zeus is polite and respectful. He may hop up on the furniture to be near you, but typically waits for an invitation first. Zeus has previously lived successfully with another small female dog. His previous owner reported that he got along well with familiar dogs. For the right person, Zeus is the kind of dog who becomes deeply devoted. He may not be the dog who loves everyone immediately, but once you're in his circle, you'll have a loyal little shadow, a warm lap companion, and a tiny best friend who will happily keep you informed about everything happening in the neighborhood.

Name: Sophie Age: 10 years Gender: Female Breed: Rat Terrier Mix Weight: 33 lbs Dog friendly: Yes, calm respectful dogs Cat friendly: Testing available upon request Child friendly: Yes, older calm gentle school-aged children House trained: Yes Crate trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate Temperament: Sweet, fun, adventurous  Requirement: Not apartment appropriate Adoption Fee: $250+tax To adopt, go to:   www.mendingspirits.org/apply-to-adopt.html From the Foster Family: Sophie is a sweet dog ready to start her next chapter. Sophie wants to be with her people-whether going for a car ride or watching TV, Sophie wants to be close by your side. Sophie loves to go for short walks, taking her time to sniff along the way. When she's not strolling with us through the neighborhood she enjoys snoozing in the sun, but due to light fur and fair skin she reluctantly takes breaks in the shade or allows you to apply dog-safe sunscreen.  She still got her spark because every so often she gets the Zoomies, but after about a minute she's looking for a soft place to rest.  Sophie is incredibly sweet and will be living her best life with people who are mostly home or can take her with them when out and about. A regular routine will not only help her transition quickly, but grow her confidence as your beloved pup. About Me: Hi! I'm Sophie and I'm so excited to meet you--don't let my age fool you! I'm 10 and considered a senior, but I love life and being by your side! I lived with my first owners since I was a puppy but was surrendered due to my humans no longer being able to care for me. I was a little overweight when I first came to my foster family, but with regular walks and a healthy diet, I've slimmed down to a healthy weight. I needed some dental work but that's all taken care of too--I am set! If you're looking for a sweet companion to join you in spending days and nights together then I'm your girl--can't wait to meet you!!!  June 22, 2026, 10:27 pm
