Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.   Dr. Pepper is two and a half years old but has an old-school hound vibe. When he came to us a year and a half ago he was very shy and took a long time to trust people. He has many people and dog friends now, and once he knows you and trusts you he is quite the snuggler. He waits patiently for that perfect person to come take him home. He is a very reasonable guy, will walk calmly on lead, and isn’t much of a crooner. Dr. Pepper loves to be stroked on his head and face-- of course he enjoys body rubs too. He plays with the toys in his room and kennel. Dr. Pepper regularly goes to daycare at Camp Merricks and enjoys running around with other dog friends. He LOVES to play with other dogs. And often doesn't want to return to the shelter. He will need a little time and patience to adjust to his new home, but this handsome boy is totally worth it! Fill out an application and come meet Dr. Pepper soon!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.    June 24, 2026, 7:30 am

My adoption fee is sponsored! Hi, I'm Jolene. Living here, I've discovered the joy of companionship, both with my human friends and dog pals. I'm a bit shy at first, but give me a little time, and I'll show you my gentle, sweet nature. I love my quiet moments, maybe in a cozy crate where I feel safe and secure. I dream of a home where I can share my mellow love, maybe with someone who understands that like me, everyone needs a little space sometimes to feel truly at home. If you're looking for a calm, loving friend, I'm your girl. I especially want to be with a doggie pal! To inquire about Jolene, please call 5404681575 or email info@highlandcountyhumanesociety.org * Jolene is spayed 6y 40 lbs. Her adoption is sponsored and includes a microchip with lifetime registration, 4dx SNAP heartworm test, DHLPP, Bordetella, and rabies and parasite control. Story
Otis is a sweet, loyal boy who is looking for a new forever home through no fault of his own. He was adopted last year and deeply loved, but sadly returned to us after his owner passed away. Otis thrives when he has space to stretch his legs and enjoy the outdoors. He would do best in a home with a fenced yard or with adopters who can give him plenty of outside time and daily activity. He bonds strongly with his people and is happiest when he can be part of their routine. Because Otis has a prey drive, he is not a good fit for a home with small dogs or cats. With the right environment and guidance, he does wonderfully and has so much love to give. Otis is ready to start a new chapter with someone who can offer stability, patience, and room to roam. If you’re looking for a devoted companion and have the space to meet his needs, Otis may be your perfect match.

Story
Hazey Maze was born on the streets of North Carolina. She was picked up by a caring citizen and spent her first 4 months of life boarding in a vet's office before finding her way to us with two of her siblings. She is the sweetest girl. Gentle, but shy; not an aggressive bone in her body. When she's scared, she hides rather than intimidating anyone. She bonds closely with females and would make a perfect companion for a compassionate young woman's first dog. At each adoption event she attends she manages to find an animal-loving young lady to spend the entire event tied to, yet she still hasn't found anyone who can give her a permanent home. She is definitely more timid of men, but she has warmed up to soft and patient men after longer periods. Again, she just runs and hides from them-- never anything aggressive. Hazey Maze loves other dogs, cats, and does fine with free-ranging fowl. She's the most gentle with special needs animal buddies, but can still keep up and romp around with high-energy doggos, too!

These pups are in Staunton, Virginia too!
