Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information. Otis is a handsome 5 year-old male who was very loved by his family. Unfortunately, their situation changed, and they could no longer provide for his needs. Additionally, they tell us that Otis, who is an active, sociable boy, has been especially lonely since his dog buddy passed away last winter.Otis is now in rescue with HUGS and we can already tell that he is a very sweet, special boy. Otis is very patient and tolerant with other dogs of all sizes, including the young puppy in his foster home. His previous owner mentioned that he always was good with kids and never bothered cats. Otis would love to have a dog buddy in his forever home. Otis thinks ball is life!! He loves to play with his ball more than anything. He also loves to get attention, and he will drop and go belly up for belly rubs. He loves walks, car rides, and in typical GSD fashion, he is happiest being with his people. He will go in the crate but does not love it. His ideal home will one where he is not left alone too many hours, and ideally, one with a friendly dog buddy. If you are looking for a fabulous family pet, Otis might be the one for you. Otis is a huge catch: a handsome boy with a wonderful temperament. He couldn't be sweeter! Otis is ready NOW to find a loving, forever home that will give him the attention he deserves, so apply quickly! The adoption fee for Otis is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped.  Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply. Like any of our dogs, Otis would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.January 20, 2026, 5:11 pm

Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information. Harrison's previous owners were in the service and didn't have a lot of time -or experience- to raise a puppy. When they had to change stations, they came to us for help as they did not feel they could take him along. Harrison is 6 months old. He is a handsome boy, who is very sweet and loves to romp around with other dogs his size, as he's an enthusiastic player. Harrison has been thriving in his foster home where he has been working on house-training and basic manners. He is an affectionate boy who will thrive in a home that is familiar with the breed. Harrison is a little shy at first and would do best in a home without too many strangers going in and out all the time. This adorable puppy would thrive in a home that will provide good routine and structure to help him continue to learn good habits, and who will continue to provide walks and other socialization experiences to help him build confidence.Like all GSDs and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Harrison will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to be a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. This sweet boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that she needs. Because of that, Harrison's ideal owner will have prior GSD, or similar breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills and manners. Harrison's adoption fee is $395, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Story
Nora is an absolutely gorgeous German Shepherd who is quickly approaching her first birthday!  She is smart as can be, goofy and friendly. Nora is mostly potty trained, kennel trained, walks well on a leash and knows a handful of tricks.  Nora’s ideal home will have a 6 foot fence (she can jump shorter fences) and no cats or apartments. You definitely need a sense of humor to have Nora in your life. She loves to “talk” when she’s playing, play tug of war and bring random things to her kennel to save for later. She enjoys supervising her foster mom cooking by always laying in sight around dinner time. Nora hasn’t been phased by fireworks or storms but Halloween decor is definitely suspicious to her on walks. She has many nicknames like Nora-nucci, Ga-nora, Nora-virus, Nori and she responds to them all! Nora is just about everything you could want in a young German Shepherd and would be a great addition to a loving home.   She was born Feb 17th, 2025 To help pay for vet bills and care (transportation, food, toys, etc..) a $250 donation is requested at the time of adoption. All of our adoptions are contingent upon an approved application, home visit, reference check, obedience training agreement, and signing of adoption contract. All our dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption. Our dogs are companion animals that live indoors as part of your family. Please do not apply if your plan is to have them as outside dogs, garage dogs, porch dogs or outside kennel dogs.  We do not ship dogs.   All of our dogs are in private foster homes. We are not a shelter with hours. A visit can be arranged after an adoption questionnaire has been filled out and sent in. Please try to email first. We are all volunteers that work so we can not easily take or make phone calls.January 12, 2026, 2:48 pm

Charlie was adopted from the Nebraska Humane Society as a 10 week old puppy. She will be 3 at the end of March. She is a very affectionate dog, loves napping most of the time. She has a few favorite toys she likes to play with and enjoys long walks. Charlie also some anxiety and is working to reduce it by having more controlled experiences.

Story
This sweet senior is Rainy (b. 2014), a German Shepard/Lab mix.  She is looking for a place where she can have a stable routine for walking and exercise.  She enjoys being active and a fenced yard is needed so she can stretch her legs.  She is also leash trained.  Rainy is friendly with other dogs, cats, new people and kids.  She would even be okay with a canine or feline sibling!  She prefers men and would like to have another dog or cat around.  Apply today to welcome Rainy into your home! The suggested adoption donation for Rainy is $300, which includes a lifetime of free relationship-based training for any behavioral problems (not obedience training).  Muddy Paws is a 501c3 non-profit organization meaning that part of your donation MAY be TAX DEDUCTIBLE. We are a 100% volunteer rescue committed to giving animals a second chance at life. All donations go toward that mission. Adoption fees are the primary source of funding for the cost of veterinary care for our animals. In 2022 alone, we provided animal Healthcare totaling over $399,000 covered mainly through adoption fees. Please Note: A Courtesy Post designates that an animal is still in the home of its owner and not in a Muddy Paws foster. This means that our exposure to the animal is limited since we are only assisting the owner in finding a new home for their pet. From time to time, owners find a new furever home for their pets outside of Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue and there is a delay in removing them from our site. We apologize if the Courtesy Post you apply to adopt is unavailable for adoption. Information about the adoption process: All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION. Once your application has completed our prescreen steps, we will put you in touch with the animal’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match. If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the animal. The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver. Please Note: We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter. We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks, and a Home Visit (Virtual in some cases) during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each animal, based on the animal’s needs. If you and the animal are not a good match, we will help you select another animal, or we will keep your approved application on file for 6 months.
