You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information.Meet Ollie (aka Ollie-Bear)! Ollie is a sweet and goofy 3-year-old German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix who’s ready to find his forever home! This big cuddle bug loves nothing more than snuggling up in bed with his foster mom, but he’s just as happy going for walks or enjoying a relaxing bath. Ollie has a playful, silly side too—he’ll lay right down in the pool on hot days to cool off, chew on squishy pillows like they’re the best toy in the world, and proudly show off his tricks like “shake” and “high-five.”  This lovable boy would do wonderfully in a home by himself (he loves the attention), or with other dogs to play with. If you’re looking for a loyal, mellow, and affectionate companion with a dash of goofiness, this lovely gentle giant just might be your perfect match. The adoption fee for Ollie is $275, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped.  Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply. Like any of our dogs, Ollie would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.April 22, 2026, 1:44 pm

Meet Jack — an adorable Australian Cattle Dog (Red Heeler) puppy with a big personality and an even bigger heart! This sweet boy is incredibly friendly with both people and other dogs, making him a wonderful companion for an active household. At just 3 months old, Jack is already off to a great start. He’s doing well with crate training and typically only wakes up once during the night. He’s also making excellent progress with potty training! Like a true Cattle Dog, Jack is smart, curious, and full of playful energy. He’ll thrive in a home that can provide plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise to keep him happy and engaged. Jack is the total package: affectionate, cheerful, and always ready for fun. He loves cuddle time, chew toys, and romping around with other pups. If you’re looking for a loyal, lively companion to grow up with your family, Jack might be your perfect match! Like all Australian Cattle Dogs and other herding breeds, Jack will thrive in a home that provides structure, consistency, training, and plenty of physical and mental activity. His ideal home will be active, committed, and experienced with ACDs, GSDs, or similar breeds. A playful canine companion would be a big bonus! Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information.Lincoln is one of the puppies from our Nebraska litter, surrendered to HUGS so they could be safely rehomed after an unplanned litter between two German Shepherd parents. Lincoln is 3.5 months old and this handsome boy is everything you’d expect from a German Shepherd puppy: smart, curious, and full of heart. Lincoln is both people-oriented and dog-friendly. He loves to play with toys, explore, and be part of whatever you’re doing—whether that’s an outdoor adventure or just tackling chores around the house. Lincoln also loves to play with other dogs! Lincoln is eager to learn and happy to please. He’s already showing off his intelligence as he works on basic commands like sit, down, touch, spin, and come. He enjoys tug toys, chewing on bones, and is just as content relaxing on the couch with his favorite toy by your side. Confident and adventurous, Lincoln can be a little independent at times. But don’t worry, he absolutely adores his people and always wants to know where you are (and how he can “help”). With his strong nose and love of sniffing, he’d make a fantastic walking, running, or hiking companion. He’s off to a great start with kennel training and potty training, and he truly enjoys learning new things. Lincoln is a great puppy. With continued guidance, he’s going to grow into an incredible companion. Like all German Shepherds and herding breeds, Lincoln will thrive in a home that provides structure, consistency, training, and plenty of physical and mental activity. His ideal home will be active, committed, and experienced with GSDs or similar breeds. A playful canine companion would be a big bonus! Even with a fenced yard, daily walks and outings are essential to help Lincoln stay well-balanced, build good manners, and avoid boredom. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information. Harrison came to us when his previous owners—who were in the service—found themselves without the time or experience needed to raise a young puppy. When they were reassigned, they made the thoughtful decision to seek help placing him in a home better suited to his needs. At just 7 months old, Harrison (aka Harry) is a handsome, sweet-natured boy with a playful spirit. He loves romping around with dogs his own size and brings an enthusiastic energy to every play session. In his foster home, he’s been thriving and continues to show what a loving, affectionate companion he can be. Harry can be a bit shy when meeting new people, so he would do best in a calmer home without a lot of unfamiliar visitors coming and going. He’ll truly flourish with an adopter who understands his breed and can provide the structure, routine, and guidance he needs as he grows. Continued walks, positive socialization, and consistency will help him build confidence and develop into a well-rounded adult dog. With the right home, Harry is sure to become a loyal and loving companion. Like all GSDs and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Harry will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to be a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. This sweet boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that she needs. Because of that, Harry's ideal owner will have prior GSD, or similar breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills and manners. Harry's adoption fee is $395, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Teddy is about 12-weeks-old, a 9-pound bundle of playful energy, and oh so smart. He loves to stay busy, whether he’s running around the yard with other dogs, tossing toys around inside, or bouncing from one fun activity to the next. He would thrive in an active home that can keep up with his happy, curious spirit. While Teddy enjoys playtime, his favorite place is right next to his people. He enjoys being held when walking around and is happy to lay at your feet when he needs to catch a snooze! As he gains confidence, he’s also starting to explore more on his own and alongside his foster dog siblings. Teddy has been wonderful with young children (ages 2–5 yo).
