Story
Meet Leo 🐾 Leo is a 7-month-old shepherd mix with the sweetest, most gentle personality — and a face that’s always smiling. This handsome boy already has a great start in life. He’s potty trained, kennel trained, and has wonderful house manners for such a young pup. Leo gets along beautifully with other dogs, kids, and even cats, making him a great fit for many types of homes. He’s naturally quiet and calm, but still has a playful side and enjoys having fun with his people and dog friends. When meeting new people or experiencing new things, Leo can be a little shy at first, but give him a little patience and reassurance and he warms up quickly. Once he feels safe, his sweet and loving personality really shines. Leo LOVES treats and chewing on bones, and is just an overall very content, easygoing dog. He also loves being outside and soaking up the fresh air, so a home with a fenced yard will be required for this outdoors-loving boy. Leo is still learning the ropes of the world and will benefit from continued leash training and gentle guidance as he grows. With a family willing to help him build confidence, he’s going to grow into an incredible companion. If you’re looking for a kind, gentle, and loyal young dog to grow with your family, Leo might just be your perfect match. 🖤 Leo is ready to find the forever home he deserves.

Story
I adopted Ginger from the Humane Society 2 years ago. She was probably 4 months old. I love her but I am having a couple of problems. We do not have a fenced in yard. She is energetic and I do walk her a few times a day. She is reactive to kids on scooters and bikes. She wants to chase them..... We have had probably $2000 worth of lessons so I guess the problem is me. She is sweet. Could we find a farmer who wants a dog?

Story
I have had Ruby (and her brother Duke) since they were 8 weeks old. Their birthday is Halloween day, 2022. Ruby loves being outside chasing a tennis ball. She has an incredible prey drive, so cats are a no no. She and her brother love to chase rabbits, squirrels, and any other smaller animal. She grew up on a 5 acre farm, so she's used to having room to run. I had to move into town and she and her brother are suffering. They are learning to leash walk but prefer their tie-outs. Duke and Ruby are a bonded pair that need to be adopted together. Ruby loves to give kisses with the side of her tounge. She loves to copy her brother, jumping on people (thanks Husky genes) so an experienced dog person would be ideal. Duke and Ruby did not grow up with kids, so they are still leery when kids are around. She takes a little longer to warm up to people than her brother. Ruby's number one love is her tennis ball. You will throw out a rotator cuff before she's ever ready to stop.

Story
I have had Duke (and his sister Ruby) since they were 8 weeks old. Their birthday is Halloween day, 2022. Duke loves being outside. He loves to chase birds, squirrels, and rabbits. He has an incredible prey drive, so cats are a no no. He grew up on a 5 acre farm, so he's used to having room to run. I had to move into town and he and his sister are suffering. They are learning to leash walk but prefer their tie-outs. Duke and Ruby are a bonded pair that need to be adopted together. Duke loves to cuddle and give kisses. He does have a bad habit of jumping on people (thanks Husky genes) so an experienced dog person would be ideal. Duke and Ruby did not grow up with kids, so they are still leery when kids are around, however Duke warms up fast and trusts more. He loves to play fetch, he and his sister have their routine worked out, he fetches, she steals it halfway back and she brings it to you. Its their system and they both get the exercise they need.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information. The puppies from the Nebraska litter were surrendered to HUGS so they could be safely rehomed, after their parents (both GSDs) had an unplanned litter prior to being spayed and neutered.Ashland is an 8.5-week-old German Shepherd puppy with the sweetest soul and the goofiest little personality. This handsome boy is the perfect mix of mellow cuddle bug and curious adventurer. Most of the time you’ll find Ashland happily snoozing, chewing a toy, or following his favorite human around like a tiny shadow. His absolute favorite place in the world is right next to the people he loves! If you’re moving, Ashland is moving too — he takes his job as your loyal sidekick very seriously. He’s a gentle, laid-back boy who loves snuggles. In fact, he loves them so much that he has been known to parkour his way out of his playpen just to be closer to his humans! Determined? Yes. Adorable? Also yes. Ashland does great interacting with other dogs and especially loves playing with his foster brother. He’s also doing wonderfully with crate training and potty training, which is pretty impressive for such a young pup! His personality is something special — Ashland is calm, affectionate, and incredibly sweet, but also confident and curious about the world around him. He’s the kind of puppy who will grow up to be a loyal Velcro dog, happiest when he’s by your side whether you’re relaxing on the couch or heading out on an adventure. If you’re looking for a loving, cuddly, and goofy best friend who will adore you with his whole heart, Ashland might just be your perfect match.  Like all GSDs and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Ashland will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to be a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. This sweet boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that she needs. Because of that, his ideal owner will have prior GSD, or similar breed experience, and a playful dog buddy. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills and manners. Ashland's adoption fee is $450, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.March 9, 2026, 11:09 am

Story
Meet Ritz!  Your Loyal, One-and-Only Companion Ritz is a 7-year-old Akita mix who’s had a bit of a rollercoaster lately. Recently returned to us through no fault of his own, he’s ready for a fresh start with a family who will cherish him forever. This big-hearted boy has so much love to give and wants nothing more than to play fetch with his people.  He thrives on attention, enjoys walks, and is always up for a good fetch session. Ritz prefers a calm environment where he can be the center of your world. He’s not a fan of sharing the spotlight, so he should be the only pet in the household. Ritz isn’t just handsome—he’s incredibly smart, too . He is fully potty trained, kennel trained, and listens well to commands. He loves having structure and knows what’s expected of him. Being the loyal Akita he is, Ritz would likely do well with kids and would adore “his” little people but he can be protective of his family, so he’ll do best with confident leadership and clear boundaries. Ritz is past the puppy stage but still full of life. He’s a smart, devoted boy with a lot of love to give. If you’re looking for a loyal friend who will bond deeply and love you unconditionally, Ritz is ready to fill that role in the most heartwarming way . Give Ritz the forever home he’s been waiting for...your couch, your heart, and your life will be better for it. The adoption fee is $300 + tax and covers age-appropriate vaccines, a microchip, and a spay/neuter.  We're open from 12-4 PM Tuesday - Saturday! Did you know you don't need to have an appointment to visit our available cats and dogs***? Simply drop by and if you find a potential new furry friend, you can fill out an application on the day you visit. Go to townandcountryanimalrescue.org to fill out our digital application. Applications are typically processed in 3-5 business days.  Once you're approved, you can return on the date and time set up by your adoption counselor, with your family for a meet and greet. If it goes well, you can take your new best friend home on the meet and greet day!  If you have other dogs in your home, they must all meet the potential adoptee.   ***Please note that animals in foster homes cannot be viewed at our rescue, and appointments are still required to meet them.  Please be sure to follow us on Facebook to learn more about Town and Country Animal Rescue and our mission.  ##954796##
