You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information.Meet Tallulah Rose: Your New Best Friend! Princess Tallulah Rose is now available for the most loving home. Tallulah is a brilliant little one in a big girl body—the sweetest, most loving girl you'll ever meet. Kisses and cuddles are at the top of her list, along with spreading smiles and giggles wherever she goes. Her list of demands is long, but you won't be able to refuse. At the top of the list is total devotion. Tallulah's Resume: - Almost Perfect Potty Training: She's well on her way! - Leash Skills:  Shes learning how to use a leash and can even carry it herself. It's the cutest thing! - Commands: She’s almost mastered 'front,' 'sit,' and 'down,' although she sometimes takes her time to look adorable. 'Go around' seems silly to her, but she’ll humor you. - Treats: She likes to gum them up a tad before tossing them around like toys. WE ARE AM NOT KIDDING!- Social Butterfly: Loves everyone she meets, and they love her, including other dogs. Her enthusiasm for kissing may be overwhelming for some, but who can resist puppy kisses? - Stairs: Initially hesitant, but she’s now a stair-racing pro. Tallulah's Ideal Home: - Playful Fur Brother:  She'd love a playful brother, preferably close to her size, as smaller dogs can be overwhelmed by her love and kisses. - Sleeping Arrangements: Enjoys cuddling in beds but will settle in a cozy crate overnight. - Works for Praise: Not all about treats or toys; she loves to work for praise. -Moderate Energy: Settles well with an antler chew but definitely has some zoomies and needs daily activities. She would Love to be a hiking partner and travels well in a car. - Loyal Companion: Loves to follow her people around. This girl will be the pride and joy of a very lucky adopter. Like any of our dogs, this beautiful girl would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Because of that, Tallulah's ideal owner will have prior GSD or similar herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners. Tallulah's adoption fee is $450, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.July 23, 2024, 3:05 am

Story
I don’t think she’s pure breed but unknown what she’s mixed with. Was malnourished when I got her, now solid 65-70lbs. Loving, goofy, energetic, house trained. Uses a crate and does well on a leash. Stays in the limits of an e-fence. Does well with 2 older GSDs but tends to be too playful with them and gets hurt. Will follow you everywhere, eager to play and please, loves to sleep with her human. Will drape across your legs while you use the bathroom. Likes eating bath bubbles, playing, putting multiple toys in her mouth at once, stealing everyone’s bones when they’re not looking and running around the yard. Loves a cheap blanket, Barks at strangers but not aggression. Hides when in trouble. Good with my kid. She is a good dog but the older ones don’t t appreciate her energy. I have also been dealing with a medical issue that makes things difficult. She would do great with a family with kids available to play with or even a couple/individual with time to play.

Story
Tank German shepherd mix Neutered Male 3 years old, 75 pounds  Tank is a handsome German shepherd mix in need of a stable foster or adoptive home so he can avoid yet another trip to a shelter in his young life. Estimated at 3-4 years of age, he was adopted in 2022 and has bounced around with family members since then, but we’d like to help put an end to this cycle for Tank. Do you like to cuddle in bed? Tanky-panky is your boy! He’s a master. He also knows several commands. Tank is 100% house trained and can be somewhat selective with other dogs. Some of this is due to being shy, so we have a trainer who would like to help boost his confidence. He has seen a vet recently and has no health concerns. Tank is neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, microchipped and current on flea/tick prevention. Tank does well when walked on leash by himself and if you have other dogs, we would want to appropriately introduce him to make sure all goes smoothly. At 75 pounds, he’s a large dog, but with the exception of occasional zoomies, he’s more often a low-energy, laid back dog. Tank is even good with cats! And we’re awarding bonus points to all applicants who are retired or work from home.July 24, 2024, 7:12 pm

This is what her doting foster parents have to say about her: 'Nyx is one of the sweetest puppies we have fostered. She is easy-going, smart, and inquisitive. She arrived to us very skinny and shy, but is definitely coming out of her shell. Nyx gets along well with the other two dogs in her foster home. She likes to wrestle with her foster sister, even though her sister is much bigger. She quickly understands when her foster siblings have had enough. She loves to chase a lure on a pole. She has become more confident over time investigating the backyard’s nooks and crannies. She loves sticks, flowers, and hiding. She does like to dig if allowed, and isn’t above grabbing an unattended sock. She is quickly learning to sit and to wait patiently for her food, even though she gets very excited about feeding time. She is working on potty-training and is almost there. She is working on potty-training and is doing well. Nyx is very comfortable in her crate. She goes in and is learning to wait for the signal to come out. She loves sleepy afternoons on the couch. Like any of our dogs, this beautiful girl would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Because of that, Nyx's ideal owner will have prior GSD or similar herding breed experience, and a friendly dog buddy for Nyx. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners. Hi there, I'm Gonzo, a bouncy 3-month-old German Shepherd pup from Heartland German Shepherd Rescue! I might be little, but I've got a big paw-sonality. My days are filled with tail-wagging fun with my foster brother, Archer. We love to play chase, tug-of-war, and sometimes I even try to out-bark him (but he’s a tough bark to beat!). Guess what? I already know the “sit” command – it’s a piece of biscuit! I’m also learning “down” and how to walk on this funny thing called a leash. I’m getting the hang of it, one paw at a time. I’m super sweet and love getting pets and belly rubs, but I’m always on the move – there’s just so much to explore! I might not have time to cuddle, but I promise I’ll make you laugh with my puppy antics. If you’re looking for a playful, loving furball who’s ready to steal your heart (and maybe a few socks), I’m your pup! Paw-leaze consider giving me my furever home. Paws and kisses, Gonzo Like any of our dogs, this beautiful boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Because of that, Gonzo's ideal owner will have prior GSD or similar herding breed experience, and a friendly dog buddy for Gonzo. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.
