You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information. The puppies from the Nebraska litter were surrendered to HUGS so they could be safely rehomed, after their parents (both GSDs) had an unplanned litter prior to being spayed and neutered. Gretna aka Gretty is a sweet, playful cuddler. She loves a good basket of toys to pick from. She loves running around, playing fetch, and ending playtime with a good nap. You can catch Gretty laying outside, enjoying the weather, or curled up at your side for a nice nap. She loves belly rubs and head scratches and will gladly give you kisses. She’s been great with the the two other pups in her foster home (a big Shepherd mix and a 12lb terrier mix) and has been playing well with both. She’s also been great with smaller children (ages 2-5 yo). Crate training and potty training have been going great and she’s even mastered sitting. She’s one smart pup and is the perfect family pet in training!   Like all GSDs and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Gretna (aka Gretty) will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to be a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. This sweet boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that she needs. Because of that, his ideal owner will have prior GSD, or similar breed experience, and a playful dog buddy. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills and manners. Gretna (aka Gretty)'s adoption fee is $450, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.March 12, 2026, 9:42 pm

Sweet, snuggly, and fun this girl is looking for a best friend to enjoy life with! A positive and happy puppy, Sidney always puts a smile on people's faces with her goofy attitude and happy-go-lucky personality. She is easy-going and one of the snuggliest pupp, following you into every room with curiosity and a wagging tail. She loves to play with other dogs and LOVES a good game of tug. She’s also been a huge fan of kids, loving to play with them around the yard. She’s outgoing and enthusiastic when meeting new people and would be a great puppy for someone beginning, or experienced with shepherds. While her socializing has only just begun, she is confident with loud noises, storms, and new situations. She sometimes needs a little confidence boost with new dogs, but once she’s comfortable, she is playful and bouncy. Sidney’s training has come along very nicely. She can settle in a crate, potties outside, and she likes to learn new tricks as long as there are tasty treats involved! She has started learning sit, down, touch, spin, and come. She is happy to learn but would prefer to hang out with you while you’re napping. She will be a wonderful dog for a lucky adopter!    Like all GSDs and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Sidney (Yote) will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to be a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. Lincoln is a typical German shepherd puppy. He is eager to learn, happy to please, and adventurous. Lincoln is happy to explore your yard on his own or be right next to you while you’re cleaning or doing chores. He is active, intelligent, and confident. Though he is independent he LOVES his people. Lincoln wants to know where you are and how he can be of service. He is engaged, loving, and very smart. He loves playing tug and chewing on bones. Typically, he’s perfectly content to sit on the couch with you and chew on his current favorite toy. He is the more assertive of the two puppies in his foster home, but is eager-to-please his people, and he would make a great hiking buddy. He has a very strong nose and can track down food from a mile away! He would love to join you on your daily walk or run and sniff everything he can. Lincoln has a big heart and super sweet personality. He settles in a kennel well, has a great start to his potty training, and loves to train. He is learning sit, down, touch, spin, and come.    Like all GSDs and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Lincoln (aka Cam) will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to be a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. Story
Meet Leo 🐾 Leo is a 7-month-old shepherd mix with the sweetest, most gentle personality — and a face that’s always smiling. This handsome boy already has a great start in life. He’s potty trained, kennel trained, and has wonderful house manners for such a young pup. Leo gets along beautifully with other dogs, kids, and even cats, making him a great fit for many types of homes. He’s naturally quiet and calm, but still has a playful side and enjoys having fun with his people and dog friends. When meeting new people or experiencing new things, Leo can be a little shy at first, but give him a little patience and reassurance and he warms up quickly. Once he feels safe, his sweet and loving personality really shines. Leo LOVES treats and chewing on bones, and is just an overall very content, easygoing dog. He also loves being outside and soaking up the fresh air, so a home with a fenced yard will be required for this outdoors-loving boy. Leo is still learning the ropes of the world and will benefit from continued leash training and gentle guidance as he grows. With a family willing to help him build confidence, he’s going to grow into an incredible companion. If you’re looking for a kind, gentle, and loyal young dog to grow with your family, Leo might just be your perfect match. 🖤 Leo is ready to find the forever home he deserves.

Story
I adopted Ginger from the Humane Society 2 years ago. She was probably 4 months old. I love her but I am having a couple of problems. We do not have a fenced in yard. She is energetic and I do walk her a few times a day. She is reactive to kids on scooters and bikes. She wants to chase them..... We have had probably $2000 worth of lessons so I guess the problem is me. She is sweet. Could we find a farmer who wants a dog?

Story
I have had Ruby (and her brother Duke) since they were 8 weeks old. Their birthday is Halloween day, 2022. Ruby loves being outside chasing a tennis ball. She has an incredible prey drive, so cats are a no no. She and her brother love to chase rabbits, squirrels, and any other smaller animal. She grew up on a 5 acre farm, so she's used to having room to run. I had to move into town and she and her brother are suffering. They are learning to leash walk but prefer their tie-outs. Duke and Ruby are a bonded pair that need to be adopted together. Ruby loves to give kisses with the side of her tounge. She loves to copy her brother, jumping on people (thanks Husky genes) so an experienced dog person would be ideal. Duke and Ruby did not grow up with kids, so they are still leery when kids are around. She takes a little longer to warm up to people than her brother. Ruby's number one love is her tennis ball. You will throw out a rotator cuff before she's ever ready to stop.
