Story
Our poor girl Salem is still waiting for a home after 8 long years. Though she can be shy at first, she longs to be someone’s loyal guardian, hiking partner, and best friend. Despite her severe hip dysplasia, she’s very active and LOVES to run. She’s so playful and full of life. Her inner puppy comes out when she gets to play with toys! Salem also loves cooler weather, though she can deal with summer heat by playing in the water. She’s great with other dogs, and loves to play with them! She’s amazing on and off leash. Salem is our special girl and we’d love to see her in a home where she can live comfortably and happily for her forever.

Story
Mystery and Black dog are a bonded pair. Mystery prefers the company of other dogs. She’s not affectionate but LOVES playing fetch and going on walks! Black dog is the definition of lazy. His idea of exercise is moving from the bed to his food bowl. We'd prefer them to be the only dogs in the home just because they share such a strong bond!

Story
Cletus is an easy going, adorable male Golden Retriever/Lab mix, born on October 12, 2024. He is a good family member, crate-trained and mostly house-trained with some support in his new home. Cletus is great with kids, dogs and cats. He might be a bit shy when he first meets new people, but warms up quickly and his goofy, loving personality shines through as you can see in the videos. He’s neutered, and very healthy and happy. The adoption fee is $50.  This covers the cost of spay/neuter, DHPP, Rabies, Flea, tick, heart worm check, worm treatment, and microchip. To adopt, you need to first fill out an application. Go to: https://rutherfordcountyhumanesociety.org/dog-adoption-application/ We are located in Western North Carolina.     Optional transport is weekly.  After your application is approved, we will contact you regarding cost and delivery if you so desire.November 12, 2025, 2:59 pm

Story
In a rough stretch of Texas, behind a mechanic’s shop where stray dogs circle for scraps and dodge speeding cars, a little shepherd mix struggled to survive. In that neighborhood, dogs often don’t grow old. They get sick without care. They get hit. They disappear quietly. But Charcoal was lucky, her future foster mom scooped her up and gave her a chance. Suddenly, Charcoal went from fighting for scraps to living in a home filled with seven kids and other dogs. From there she was fully vetted and transported to LRHS by Operation Pets Alive arriving on January 2nd.We thought her hardest days were behind her but these happy `tails` aren’t always simple.During intake, our veterinary assistant, Lydia Gilbert, noticed something concerning: a plum-sized lump on Charcoal’s left hip. Further testing revealed lymphoma and atypical cells. We had a choice to make — and thanks to our Saving Grace Fund, we were able to say “yes” to surgery without hesitation. The mass was removed by the good folks at The Kindness Animal Hospital and sent out for biopsy.Thankfully, it came back benign but removing it was the best decision. Left alone, it would have continued to grow, potentially limiting her mobility or even turning cancerous as she aged. Instead, she was given the gift of a healthy future. The road to recovery wasn’t easy — especially for an eight-month-old shepherd with boundless puppy energy and no understanding of “take it easy.” The incision was on a highly mobile hip joint, making healing tricky. Despite calming medications, a cone paired with an inflatable collar, and a surgery suit, Charcoal found ways to reopen her incision. That meant additional hospital visits, extra staples, and even a drain. Charcoal`s medical bills total $1,500.Today, we are overjoyed to report that Charcoal has made a full recovery! This 9-month-old, spayed, doggo is healed, happy, and ready for adoption. She loves dogs and people and thrives in active environments. True to her big puppy nature — she has limited spatial awareness (no toddlers kids for this enthusiastic girl!).
