MEET DAVIS AGAIN, BECAUSE THIS HANDSOME BOY GOT SOME NEW MUGSHOTS 📸💙Davis’s special adoption fee is only $25.Davis would like everyone to know that he is innocent. His only crimes are being criminally handsome, treating wire kennels like a personal insult, and somehow making all of us believe he was an elderly gentleman when he is probably only around four years old.These new mugshots show the Davis we wish everyone could see. He is standing tall in the sunshine with his ears up, his tongue out, and that big German Shepherd smile across his face. He looks proud, happy, and full of life. He looks nothing like the tired nine-year-old dog we once believed was sitting inside that shelter kennel.Davis originally came to us as a stray, and nobody ever came to take him back home. His teeth were in rough shape, and based on what we knew at the time, we believed he was around nine years old. That was how we first introduced him to everyone, as an older German Shepherd who had already lived most of his life.Later, one of Davis’s former neighbors contacted us with more information. They knew him as Sam and told us he was born in May of 2022. If that information is correct, Davis is only around four years old.Apparently, Davis has been lying about his age through his teeth this whole time.Looking at these new pictures and watching the way he comes alive when he gets outside, four years old makes a whole lot more sense. Davis is not an old man reaching the end of his story. He is a young adult dog who has already lived enough hard years to make us believe he was much older.Not long after Davis came to us, he tested positive for heartworms. What followed was one of the hardest and scariest parts of his story.His first heartworm treatment injection hit him terribly hard. He became so unwell that one of our volunteers truly believed Davis might be dying. That volunteer took Davis home with him because he was afraid Davis might not make it and wanted to keep a close eye on him.But Davis was not finished.That stubborn German Shepherd held on. He made it through that frightening part of treatment, recovered, and went back to Dr. Boley’s to finish what he had started. Davis completed the rest of his heartworm injections successfully and stayed overnight with the girls at the veterinarian’s office.That overnight stay taught us something important about him. Away from the barking, stress, and constant commotion of the shelter, Davis was not some wild or difficult dog. He was just a lazy, silly boy who wanted to lie around and enjoy his overnight accommodations. Apparently, Davis believed heartworm treatment came with room service and a sleepover.At the shelter, Davis can be reactive toward some dogs. At the veterinarian’s office, he walked right past kennels with other dogs inside without turning his head or acting like he cared one bit. That does not mean we can promise Davis will live peacefully with every dog, but it showed us just how much the shelter environment may be affecting him.After his treatment injections, Davis still had follow-up medication and a very important recovery period ahead of him. He had to remain calm while his body finished healing and everything from the treatment had time to work. Too much running, stress, excitement, or activity could have been dangerous for him.Trying to convince a young German Shepherd who loves being outside that he needed to rest was about as easy as explaining taxes to a squirrel, but Davis conquered that part too.Today, Davis has completed his heartworm treatment. The same dog we were once afraid we might lose is now standing tall in these new mugshots, smiling at the world like none of it ever happened. He survived the injections, the medication, the restrictions, and all those long days when he was not allowed to run around and be himself.Davis conquered heartworms. Now he needs somebody to show him what he fought so hard to stay alive for.Davis is active, house-trained, loves being outside, and enjoys having room to stretch his legs and explore. He can also be a runner, so his adopter will need to take keeping him safely leashed and secured seriously. He hates wire and transport kennels with his entire soul and would probably leave them a one-star review if we ever gave him access to the internet.With people, Davis is a completely different boy. He loves attention and will practically melt right down at your feet when someone stops long enough to love on him. Underneath that big German Shepherd body is a dog who simply wants a person of his own. He does not need a crowd. He needs one person or family who will look at him and decide that he is finally worth staying for.We will always be honest about what Davis needs. He must have absolutely no cats. Davis would be safest as the only pet, although an experienced owner may be able to consider another dog through very slow and careful introductions. He needs someone who understands that the barking, stressed dog they may see inside a shelter kennel is not always the same dog who will be lying peacefully beside them at home.Davis has watched other dogs come into the shelter, get chosen, and leave with their new families while he has continued waiting. Every time someone walks near his kennel, he still gets excited. Every time a leash comes out, he still hopes it might finally be his turn. Somehow, after coming in as an unclaimed stray, nearly losing his life during treatment, and spending all this time behind kennel bars, Davis still believes people can be good.We are giving Davis new mugshots, a much-deserved grooming, and a proper reintroduction because his old post no longer tells his whole story. He is not the nine-year-old, heartworm-positive dog people may remember scrolling past. He is a handsome German Shepherd around four years old who fought his way through heartworm treatment and came out the other side still loving people.Davis’s $25 adoption fee does not mean he is worth less. It simply means we do not want money to be the reason the right person leaves him behind. What Davis needs most cannot be bought anyway. He needs patience, understanding, security, and somebody willing to give him the peaceful home he has waited so long to find.Please look closely at these new mugshots. Look past the worn teeth, the heartworm history, and the behavior that comes from living inside a stressful shelter. Look at the dog standing tall in the sunshine.Davis fought too hard to live just to spend the rest of that life waiting inside a kennel.We would really love for the next pictures we post of this handsome boy to be the ones showing him going home.
