Attention pointer loving people: I am proud to introduce you to the Norse Goddess Freya! Yeah, ok, so she's not REALLY a goddess, but she is Freya and she does welcome adoration, in the form of pets, scritches, half-snuggles, and...treats! Definitely treats. Our lady has had 13 years of learning so far in this life, and she's a "wise" and wisened soul. She came to GPPR from a complicated situation, one where her resilience, determination, resourcefulness, and smarts served her well. A consequence of her survivor spirit is a smidgen of...sass, and a bit of naughty.  She knows how to dump a trash can by grabbing the edge of the bag with her teeth. She knows how to open the lid of a closed toilet. She still counter-surfs. All results of having had to fend for herself in her former home. We've dubbed her alter ego Loki...especially so when she sneakily swipes a toy from one of her foster sisters! Trickster behavior aside, Freya is very sweet, happy, curious, and in spite of everything still loving. She loves to be with "her" people. She loves her three foster sisters, one who is a typical younger pointer (you all know what I mean, she's crazy) and one who is also a senior citizen.  She even loves our cat, Shadow, though I'm not sure the feeling is mutual: Shadow doesn't deign to show herself often but when she does Freya slowly follows her like a, well, shadow. More than anything she loves her "girls", the 15 and 17 year old humans who live here too and the 9 year old who lives next door. Freya is a magical mix of GSP, and something yet to be determined. DNA test pending, but we all have our bets and they're mostly on something fluffy. She does not have a shorthair coat, nor a short hair on her anywhere.  She's fluffy and soft and very calming to pet. She's also built a little differently: broader across the back than a full pointer, and equipped with a bonus toe on her front right foot! She is polydactyl and also ectrodactyl! No worries though, she's lived her whole life this way and the vet says her "lucky toe" gets to stay! The extra fun to her foot doesn't seem to slow her down, but some slight arthritis does some. She will still trot when the proper motivation presents itself, but that's her fastest speed. She likes walks, but they need to be short. She LOVES being outside, and the screen porch is a favorite napping locale. She would love to join you on the couch but can't quite get herself up there so she'll put just her front half in your lap and lay there. Freya would love to be your new fluffy buddy, and to have a warm and loving home to finish out her final years. Freya is being fostered in Ames, IA. To learn more, complete the adoption application here: ADOPT ME *Please be sure to read the adoption information page on our website before applying for a dog.    For those who have been following along, here are any updates you may have missed: UPDATE: October 1, 2026 Freya is settling in and had a very encouraging veterinary visit! Her veterinarian does not consider Freya a hospice case and feels she currently has a good quality of life and plenty of spirit. Her bloodwork did not show diabetes or kidney disease. She does have a urinary tract infection, which may be contributing to her increased drinking, urination, and panting. We are treating the infection first and will reassess those symptoms once she has had time to recover. Freya also has some arthritis, but it is not currently keeping her from getting around, exploring, or even helping herself to treats off the counter! Her unusual foot and extra toe were evaluated with an X ray, and for now there is no reason to remove the toe unless it begins causing her problems. For now, Freya is enjoying the comforts of her foster home while we get her UTI treated and learn more about what helps her feel her best. She has made it very clear that there is still plenty of life and personality in this sweet senior girl. Freya will be available for adoption once she has completed her initial medical care. We are so grateful to everyone helping give this special senior the chance to enjoy her next chapter.   Freya's Story  Freya has made it out of the shelter and is now safely in a foster home with Great Plains Pointer Rescue. She is a 13-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who came to the shelter after her owner passed away. She had been living in difficult conditions and arrived in need of significant care. Despite everything she has been through, Freya has shown us that she still has plenty of personality. She enjoys being with people, exploring her surroundings, and, apparently, helping herself to anything interesting on the counter. When Freya first arrived, her shelter records noted mobility and joint issues, cataracts, dental disease, pressure sores, and a malformed digit on one of her front paws. She has now had her initial veterinary evaluation through GPPR, and we are addressing her needs one step at a time. What Happens Next? Freya's first priority is getting healthy and comfortable in her foster home. We are treating her urinary tract infection and giving her time to settle in so we can get a better picture of her day-to-day needs. Being a German Shorthair & Hound mix, you can imagine that ol' Oscar is a lover of the outdoors! This sweet boy was born in May of 2015 and is still looking for a place to call his own. Oscar enjoys being around people, especially ladies, but he understands what it's like to need some space: your time, my time, and our time! Oscar experiences anxiety and because of this, boundaries are important to him. When his anxiety is low, Oscar is a goofy, playful boy who likes to chase balls, sticks, and rabbits. He loves, loves, loves long walks with plenty of time to let his hound nose get some exercise, and lots of exercise helps work off that extra energy that can make this handsome boy nervous! Because of his love for exploration, Oscar will need a fenced-in yard to keep him close to home.  Oscar is not kennel trained, but is totally fine being left to lounge around the house while you're away.  He's also housetrained, so no worries about that business! Oscar is a very smart dog who knows "sit", "stay", "lay down", "leave it" and he also knows that when he follows these fun words, he gets really yummy treats! Oscar's ideal home will be with an active person/couple who love to explore nature, just like he does, and who will love him like family while respecting his need for boundaries and independence!
