Story
Mabel is a 5.5-year-old spayed female German Shorthaired Pointer who weighs about 50 lbs. She is affectionate, observant, and settling beautifully into foster care. While she can be a little cautious in new situations at first, she quickly shows her sweet and snuggly personality once she feels comfortable. Since arriving in foster care, Mabel has been calm, well behaved, and very affectionate. She especially enjoys curling up next to people on the couch and being close to her humans. Her foster family describes her as a “snuggle bug” who has mostly spent her first few days quietly taking everything in. Mabel currently lives with another adult GSP and a young puppy. She has shown appropriate communication with the puppy when overwhelmed and is already becoming more tolerant as she settles in. Overall, she has a history of doing well with other dogs and has been described as more submissive and playful in social settings.  She is crate trained and will voluntarily go into her kennel when she wants a quiet space, though she has also done very well free roaming overnight. She has not been destructive in the home and has shown good house manners overall. Mabel does pull somewhat on leash but has not shown tendencies to bolt through doors or try to escape. Mabel knows several commands including sit, wait, fetch, turn, and drop it. She enjoys being part of the family and would thrive in a home where she gets plenty of companionship and affection.  Like many dogs adjusting to major life changes, Mabel has experienced some mild stress related to transitions, including decreased appetite and some shakiness when separated, but she has already shown improvement after just a few days in foster care. Her foster family reports that she continues gaining confidence daily. Mabel can be vocal when she notices activity outside or when visitors arrive, but she has been polite when greeting guests and enjoys meeting new people. She appears to adjust fairly quickly and has all the makings of a loyal, loving family companion. Story
Lexie is a 5-year-old spayed female German Shorthaired Pointer who weighs about 55 lbs. She is affectionate, playful, and full of classic GSP personality. Her foster family describes her as a sweet girl who loves being close to her people and has quickly made herself comfortable in the home, including sleeping under the covers “like a proper GSP.” Lexie loves kids and has happily soaked up attention and snuggles from visiting teenagers in foster care. She forms strong attachments to her people and prefers to stay close by wherever they are going. She is an active, bird obsessed pointer who thoroughly enjoys patrolling the backyard and chasing birds. Her foster family has already started working on long line training and helping her learn how to relax and settle instead of constantly being “on duty.” She is smart, engaged, and very much enjoys having something to do. Lexie currently lives with other GSPs in foster care. She can be somewhat cautious about other dogs getting too close initially and is still adjusting to new canine relationships, but she is already making progress and becoming more comfortable. Historically, she has done well with dogs in neutral settings like dog parks. Her foster family is continuing to work on confidence building and positive interactions. She has also shown some mild resource guarding behaviors toward the adult woman in the foster home. At this point, it has not been severe, and her foster family has already begun actively working on it. Lexie will likely do best with adopters who understand dog body language and are comfortable continuing structure and training as she settles into a new environment. Lexie is crate trained and accustomed to being kenneled overnight and during away times. Like many dogs experiencing major transitions, she initially showed some mild stress related to separation and change, including shakiness and loose stools, but this improved after only a few days. She knows several commands, including sit, wait, fetch, and drop it. She can be a little mischievous at times and has discovered that counters and tables occasionally contain treasures worth investigating. Overall, Lexie is a loving, energetic dog who wants to be included as part of the family and will thrive with people who appreciate the fun, loyal, and sometimes goofy nature of the breed. Story
Bo is an 8-year-old neutered male German Shorthaired Pointer weighing around 50 pounds. He is a friendly, affectionate guy who has settled quickly into foster care and clearly enjoys being part of the family. Bo is social, easygoing, and happiest when he is included in everyday life. He enjoys exploring outdoors, lounging near his people, and will absolutely try to convince you he is a lap dog despite his size. His foster describes him as affectionate without being overly clingy. He likes attention, enjoys snuggling, and has done well adapting to new environments. He currently lives with multiple dogs of varying sizes and has done well with all of them. He has also been around cats, rabbits, and young children with no concerns reported. Overall, Bo has shown himself to be a well rounded, friendly dog with a stable temperament. Bo is house trained and kennel trained. He sleeps comfortably in a kennel at night and has handled time alone appropriately in foster care. He knows basic commands, responds well to structure and routine, and has previous bird and shed hunting experience. Like many GSPs, he would benefit from continued consistency and ongoing work with recall and obedience. Bo’s Highlights • 8 years old • Neutered male • Approximately 50 lbs • AKC registered German Shorthaired Pointer • Friendly with dogs, cats, rabbits, and children • House trained • Kennel trained • Affectionate and social • No separation anxiety reported • No bite history Bo would do best with a family that wants an active companion and understands the GSP breed’s need for engagement, structure, and exercise. Story
Being a German Shorthair & Hound mix, you can imagine that ol' Oscar is a lover of the outdoors! This sweet boy was born in May of 2015 and is still looking for a place to call his own. Oscar enjoys being around people, especially ladies, but he understands what it's like to need some space: your time, my time, and our time! Oscar experiences anxiety and because of this, boundaries are important to him. When his anxiety is low, Oscar is a goofy, playful boy who likes to chase balls, sticks, and rabbits. He loves, loves, loves long walks with plenty of time to let his hound nose get some exercise, and lots of exercise helps work off that extra energy that can make this handsome boy nervous! Because of his love for exploration, Oscar will need a fenced-in yard to keep him close to home.  Oscar is not kennel trained, but is totally fine being left to lounge around the house while you're away.  He's also housetrained, so no worries about that business! Oscar is a very smart dog who knows "sit", "stay", "lay down", "leave it" and he also knows that when he follows these fun words, he gets really yummy treats! Oscar's ideal home will be with an active person/couple who love to explore nature, just like he does, and who will love him like family while respecting his need for boundaries and independence! The suggested adoption donation for Oscar is $315.  We are a 501c3 organization which means that your donation may be TAX DEDUCTIBLE.  Your donation goes toward the high cost of veterinary care for our animals in rescue, as well as providing supportive services to animals in homes. Information about the adoption process:  All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION.  Once your application is approved, we will put you in touch with the dog’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match.  If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the pet.  The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver. Please Note:  We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter.  We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each dog, based on the dog’s needs.  If you and the dog are not a good match, we will help you select another dog, or we will keep your approved application on file for 6 months.
