All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption. Adoption fee: $800 Jelly Bean: Ready to Roll! The Basics Jelly Bean is a 2 year old, 57-pound Goldendoodle with a goofy personality, a tender heart, and an abiding love of automobiles. He was rescued from the shelter and wasted no time showing his foster family that he was ready for his next adventure. When they opened the trunk at pickup, Jelly Bean hopped right in, climbed into the back seat, stretched out, and gave everyone a look that seemed to say, “I’m ready—what are we waiting for?” Please note that Jelly Bean’s current photos were taken before grooming. His non-shedding coat arrived with mats and tangles from his previous life, but he will be professionally groomed soon and is preparing for quite the makeover! His future family should be ready to continue regular brushing and professional grooming to keep his coat comfortable and healthy. A Day in the Life Jelly Bean usually wakes around 6:30 a.m., although he is perfectly happy to sleep in when his foster mom does. He begins his day with a trip to the backyard to stretch his legs and take care of business. Breakfast is served around 7:00 a.m., followed by a morning walk. He spends much of the morning napping, playing with his toys, or following his foster mom from room to room to supervise the day’s activities. He enjoys staying close to his people, but he is also respectful—if a door closes, he simply waits outside without whining. Some afternoons include a short car ride to pick up his teenage foster sister from school or take her to an activity. These outings are a highlight for Jelly Bean, who may be the world’s biggest car enthusiast. He once planted himself beside the family car and refused to budge because he wanted a ride instead of a walk. Even when traveling on foot, he carefully inspects and sniffs the parked cars along the route, just in case one happens to be available. Jelly Bean takes another walk around 6:30 p.m. and then eats dinner. Afterward, he heads into the backyard with the resident dog, where he may run, play, unleash a spectacular case of the zoomies, or watch his foster dad work in the yard. He usually dozes off in the living room around 9:30 p.m. When the rest of the family goes to bed, Jelly Bean relocates to the bedroom and sleeps comfortably in his own bed throughout the night. Sweet, Silly, and Full of Fun Jelly Bean is a friendly, affectionate dog who happily greeted every member of his foster family from the very beginning. He loves attention, cuddles, tummy rubs, and gentle massages beneath his front legs. One morning, he even approached his foster mom’s bed and softly licked her arm to wake her up—an especially sweet start to the day. He is playful and energetic, but he also knows how to settle down and relax with his family. Jelly Bean entertains himself by tossing a tennis ball and chasing it, then celebrates his walks with daily backyard zoomies. A yard would be a wonderful bonus for this big, bouncy boy, although an active family committed to giving him plenty of exercise and enrichment is most important. Jelly Bean is also a smart pup who has already made impressive progress in foster care. He is fully housetrained and rings a bell beside the door when he needs to go outside. Dogs, Cats, and Teenagers Jelly Bean lives with Charlie, a 50-pound, 8-year-old dog. Jelly Bean frequently invites Charlie to play, although Charlie does not always share his enthusiasm. Jelly Bean also greets dogs politely while out walking. He appeared comfortable around cats during his initial assessment at the DPS safehouse, though he has not lived with one in his foster home. He lives with a teenager and has shown a sweet attachment to her. When the family dropped her off one day, Jelly Bean cried from the back seat because he was concerned to see her leave. Walks and Adventures Jelly Bean is a pleasant walking companion who adjusts his pace to match the person holding the leash. With an Easy Walk-style harness, his foster mom can comfortably walk him either alone or beside the resident dog. He does not pull excessively and has greeted the dogs he encounters nicely. Continued leash practice will help him become an even more polished walking partner. And if the destination happens to involve a car ride? Even better. Home-Alone Skills When initially left home alone, Jelly Bean stayed in a four-foot-tall exercise pen. He whined briefly, then settled down and napped. After several successful attempts, however, this clever athlete figured out how to escape the pen. His future family will need to provide a secure, appropriately dog-proofed setup when he is alone and help him adjust gradually to a new routine. A Few Skills Still in Progress Jelly Bean is an enthusiastic, powerful young dog who sometimes jumps or uses his mouth when he becomes excited, wants attention, or objects to something such as having his paws cleaned. He has already improved significantly with consistent guidance, but his adopters must be committed to continuing positive-reinforcement training and teaching him calmer ways to communicate. Because of his size and current jumping and mouthing habits, Jelly Bean is not a match for a home with small children or elderly or physically vulnerable household members. A family with older children or adults who are comfortable handling a large, exuberant dog would be best. Jelly Bean may also bark when he hears an unfamiliar sound, when someone enters while he is resting, or when he is excitedly trying to persuade another dog to play. As he becomes more familiar with his surroundings, his family can help him learn which sounds truly require his attention. His Dream Home Jelly Bean is looking for an active, patient family that will love his joyful personality while continuing his training. He would appreciate regular walks, plenty of playtime, car rides whenever possible, and perhaps a yard where he can perform his famous post-walk zoomies. His adopters should also be prepared for the ongoing grooming required by his non-shedding coat. This affectionate, funny, car-obsessed boy is ready to fill his next home with cuddles, laughter, tennis-ball games, and a whole lot of personality.
