Story
Seven-year-old Marvin is a sweet, handsome boy who is young at heart. Found in an apartment in the South, he was abandoned when his humans moved away. Boy, was he relieved to be found and has settled in happily as he awaits his forever home and his best years. Marvin loves quality time with his humans and is so glad his foster mom works from home. He absolutely loves his toys, playing fetch, and treats! His favorite toys are balls and he even sleeps with them in his mouth! He is ready to play whenever you want and is always up for a walk! After a walk and some playtime, he loves his cuddles at night! He takes his treats gently and does a little hippity hop when he gets his meals! So cute!!! Marvin has the most expressive face and you can almost see what he is thinking when he looks at you. Marvin is a really nice dog through and through. While at the vet clinic in AL, he got along fine with other dogs and even cats. However, since Marvin doesn't like to share his toys with other dogs, we will seek a home where he will be someone's "one and only." He has a soft mouth and we have learned that he loves soft toys. His foster family in the northeast shares, "Marvin loves to play and will use any toy or ball to get your attention when he wants to play. He loves tennis balls; he retrieves the ball and will then release it. He also enjoys chewing on toys and balls - he's quite a fun dog." Marvin also likes to play with sticks, as you can see in his video. Marvin appreciates attention and he will be a terrific companion in a loving home. He enjoys the companionship of the foster family's teenagers and does great with younger kids too. He walks okay on a leash and with some fine-tuning, he will have this skill mastered quickly. Marvin has a moderate energy level, typical of a 7-year old dog, so regular nice walks and playtime are on his wish list. When it's time for nighty-night, Marvin sleeps in his bed all night long without a peep. Good boy, Marvin! Very good boy! Marvin is potty trained and trustworthy in the home. Marvin seeks a home we’re he would be the only dog. He is the sweetest boy and deserves a home that will love him forever. Be sure to take a look at his video. Weighing about 80-85 lbs, Marvin is vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. He was treated for heartworm and is now cleared for regular activities. He has also received a Proheart 6 injection which means he will not need heartworm preventative for six months. He is in a foster home in the northeast and is ready to meet his forever humans. Could that be you? If you are interested in becoming the happy ending to Marvin's rescue story, please contact Mary to be considered to adopt this happy, tail-wagging hunk! If not yet approved, please fill out an application to be considered. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs, from behavioral to emotional to medical. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. Story
Beautiful Ginger found herself in an overcrowded shelter in MS and was adopted by a local rescuer who planned to keep Ginger for herself. Sadly, just two weeks after bringing Ginger home, the rescuer found out she had terminal cancer and asked if SGRR would find this beautiful girl her forever home. We were happy to help and it was just in time as this gentle woman passed away quite suddenly. At about 9-10 years of age, Ginger is a dream girl and her southern foster family had only wonderful things to say about her. She has perfect house manners, walks well on the leash, and rides nicely in the car. Ginger loves watching sports on TV with her foster family and her favorite thing to eat is scrambled eggs. One of our volunteers shared, "Ginger does this adorable thing where she kinda murmurs when being loved and leans in for more pets and praise. It’s like a purring cat in a larger GR female! :) Such a loving and sweet lady." Now in a foster home in the northeast, her foster mom tells us, "She is a happy girl and loves to please. She loves playing ball and really enjoys walking. She's very easy to be with and is very affectionate. She walks nicely on a leash and has good house manners. She enjoys all creature comforts. Ginger would love to be someone’s best friend!" Ginger met her foster mom’s friend's dog and walked next to her but did not seem to want to play with her. Ginger seems to seek people's companionship over dog companionship. Ginger is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. She finished heartworm treatment and has been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention. While Ginger has lived with other dogs in her southern foster home, she can be dog-selective so we will seek a home for her where she can be her human's one and only. She has no known history with kitties. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. Story
"Well, hello, everyone... My name is Caleb and I beg your forgiveness if I am talking in a quiet voice, but I am a bit shy. Come a little closer and I will tell you all I know about myself. We dogs are so puzzled about how this “stray” thing happens. One day we’re someone’s pet and next thing you know, we’re alone and scared. I somehow wound up in the Dixon Correctional Institute. Oh, I didn’t do anything wrong to be incarcerated but was taken into their rehabilitation program, kind of like you see on the TV show Pitbulls and Parolees. While I was given food and shelter in this program, not much was done to help me feel comfortable in my own fur. But thankfully, they called SGRR to rescue me!” “I hear people say that I am very handsome, a real looker, and very sweet – I think these are all good things! Right? The rescue people think I am a Golden Retriever mixed with something cute and pocket-sized, since I am on the smaller side at about 30 pounds. My eyes are a warm brown and I heard this nice lady say that their sweetness melts her heart. “When I meet you, I am shy at first, but I am so ready to fall in love again and I hope to find an owner who will love me for who I am. I am in a wonderful foster home now and the more I get to know my humans, the more comfortable I become around them. I cherish their affection and their kindness, and I love how they speak to me with gentle tones. I like the company of calmer dogs. I walk pretty nicely on a leash and have a moderate energy level. A quiet adult-only home, with kind, patient, and soft-spoken humans, who are home more often than not, would be ideal for me. I would relish a home where I can be spoiled, kissed, and loved. But please know, I will need time to adjust and unpack my bags. In return, I promise to be your best friend, forever!" Well, thank you for sharing your story with us, Caleb! We are delighted to have you with us and you will learn all about kindness in your southern foster home with Cheryl & Paul. They tell us that Caleb is slowly becoming more comfortable with them and with being in a home environment. Caleb now allows Paul to pick him up and will also stay on the couch with them for a while now, whereas a week or so ago, he would only stay up for a few minutes. Caleb doesn’t mind having a leash on him, but it does not seem like walks have been part of his previous life experience. He eats pretty well and will do so now with his foster parents in the room. Cheryl tells us that when she gets up in the morning, she finds that Caleb’s toys have been moved about the room – oh to be a fly on the wall when all is quiet and Caleb ventures to play with his toys. He is taking baby steps but is certainly moving forward! Caleb is estimated to be about 5 years old and has the adorable look of a perpetual puppy. He has been neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. Since he tested positive for heartworm he has been under treatment and is almost ready for his forever home. He has been given a Proheart 6 injection for heartworm prevention so Caleb will not need any additional HW preventatives for 6 months. He will be coming north in mid-January to be directly adopted. If you are approved to adopt through SGRR, have a quiet adult-only home, a fenced yard, and your specialty is TLC, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Caleb.
