Meet Astro (aka Iroh) — a gentle giant in the same way a moose is “just a bigger deer.” He is large. He is loving. He is deeply convinced he is lap-sized. Physics disagrees, but Astro remains unbothered. In short: Astro (Iroh) is big, soft, unintentionally hilarious, and built like a linebacker with the heart of a kindergarten teacher. He’s the dog who makes you laugh without trying, love him without effort, and forgive him instantly for forgetting — yet again — that he is, in fact, enormous. 🐾
Astro (aka Iroh) is a 5-year-old, 103-pound male Golden Retriever / Great Pyrenees mix, which explains a lot about him, honestly. He has the sunny optimism and people-loving heart of a Golden paired with the calm, thoughtful, old-soul energy of a Pyr. Big body, soft brain, extremely tender feelings. Astro recently found his way back to us through absolutely no fault of his own. About a year after his adoption, he was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease, and with proper treatment, he actually did very well. He adjusted, stabilized, and carried on being his gentle, goofy self. Unfortunately, in February 2025, his family welcomed a second child, and while that’s a joyful life event for humans, it turned out to be a lot for Astro’s nervous system to handle. Like some dogs (and honestly, some adults), Astro doesn’t thrive in a high-energy, constantly changing environment. The excitement, noise, and unpredictability that naturally come with a toddler added stress to his daily life, and that stress began to show up physically through his Addison’s symptoms. Astro is a dog who finds comfort in consistency. Regular schedules, quiet evenings, and knowing what to expect to help him feel secure and allow his health to remain stable.
When it comes to other dogs, Astro is that guy who wants to play, enthusiastically agrees to wrestle, and then politely accepts when the other dog says, “Okay, that’s enough, I’m tired.” He plays well, reads the room, and understands boundaries — which is frankly more emotional maturity than most adults. He’s lived happily with another dog, enjoys a good wrestling match, and has been around unfamiliar dogs on weekend trips without turning it into a whole production. As he’s matured, he’s traded his “in your face LET’S BE FRIENDS RIGHT NOW” phase for a much more dignified, mellow vibe. Cats? Shockingly unbothered. Astro treats cats like mysterious roommates who pay rent in vibes only. He mostly ignores them, minds his business, and somehow has allowed a cat to fully occupy his dog bed on multiple documented occasions. Kids, however, are where Astro politely but firmly opts out. He has been around very young children (ages two and under), and while he was never aggressive or unsafe, it became clear that the unpredictability, noise, and sudden movements stressed him out — especially once the toddler entered the “walking, wobbling, screaming for no reason” stage of development. Astro handled it by retreating to his kennel, but the constant stimulation took a toll on his health. His nerves were understandably shot, and for a dog managing Addison’s Disease, that kind of ongoing stress just isn’t fair or sustainable. Older kids who are calmer, more predictable, and capable of respecting space would likely be fine — but Astro hasn’t been around them enough to make bold claims. What we do know is that toddlers are simply not his target demographic. As for meeting new people, Astro is friendly and social without being obnoxious about it. He enjoys saying hello, especially if dogs are involved, and will happily approach to make introductions. That said, he does listen when told to chill. If given permission, he’ll trot over to greet new friends; if asked to stay put, he complies like the good boy he is.
Astro operates at what we like to call a respectable 7 out of 10 on the energy scale — meaning he’s not bouncing off the walls, but he’s also not a decorative throw pillow. He has opinions about movement, enjoys participating in activities, and then very much enjoys recovering from those activities by laying down somewhere inconvenient. Cars? Absolute professional. Astro has never met a vehicle he couldn’t handle. He hops in just fine, settles in, and has successfully completed road trips of around three hours without a single complaint. Astro is the perfect blend of adventure-seeker and professional lounger. In his younger days, he was more about the go-go-go lifestyle, but maturity (and managing Addison’s) has refined his tastes. He’s not interested in chaotic environments like dog parks, pet stores, or coffee shops where everyone is overstimulated and no one knows personal boundaries. What he does love is a calm car ride to a nice walking trail, followed by a pleasant stroll and then a solid nap. At this stage in life, he’s just as content exploring the outdoors as he is supervising the household from the couch. Temperament-wise, Astro has fully earned his title of Gentle Giant. He’s past the puppy nonsense, more thoughtful, more relaxed, and significantly more chill — while still being an absolute goofball. He forgets his size on a daily basis and regularly attempts to walk between people’s legs for butt scratches, apparently assuming we are all built like NBA forwards. He is affectionate, silly, and deeply convinced that proximity equals love. Water play? He enjoys his kiddie pool like a distinguished spa guest. Full swimming pools, however, are a no. He’ll happily sit on the steps, soak a little, and judge swimmers from his throne. Toys? Yes. Toys are good. Toys are fun. End of discussion. Astro would be happiest in a home with a securely fenced yard, where he can enjoy fresh air, casual lounging, and supervising the outdoors when the weather is nice. While he can do leash walks, having a yard fits his lifestyle much better. And yes — despite his laid-back demeanor — Astro is a smart boy. He knows sit, stay, come, stand, and down, which means he is fully capable of listening… when he decides the request is reasonable.
Astro is, at his core, a very respectable adult dog who knows how a household functions and sees no reason to reinvent the wheel. He is fully potty trained, because he is not a heathen and understands that bathrooms are, in fact, an outdoor-only situation. Accidents are not his brand. He has places to be and dignity to maintain. Chewing? Absolutely not. Astro is not interested in destroying your belongings, your shoes, or your will to live. He understands what is his and what is not, and he respects that division. Barking is used sparingly and with intention. Inside, he may bark if the doorbell rings (valid) or if you have somehow failed to notice that he would like to go outside (also valid). Outside, he’s almost entirely silent unless someone is approaching the backyard — at which point he will issue a brief, professional notification. No excessive commentary. No yelling into the void. Astro has completed training alongside other dogs and did very well, because he is a good student who takes direction seriously — even if he occasionally forgets he weighs over 100 pounds. One important thing to know is that Addison’s Disease can impact his behavior when he’s under stress. During those times, he may become more withdrawn, a little skittish, or show nervous behaviors. With stability, routine, and understanding, he settles beautifully. As far as medical management, Astro is on a very straightforward, well-established routine. He takes one Prednisone daily (yes, he is excellent at taking meds, because treats exist), and he receives one monthly Percorten injection at 2.7 mL. That’s it. No juggling a million medications, no complicated schedules — just consistency.
