Story
Ricky Male DOB 7/1/21 Approx 10 lbs Neutered Meet Ricky – A Loyal Little Heart Ready to Learn What Love Means 🐾 Ricky is a 4-year-old Maltese–Yorkie mix with a gentle soul and so much love waiting to bloom. He came into rescue from a hoarding situation, and while his early life didn’t give him the stability every dog deserves, Ricky is now discovering what it means to be part of a caring family. In his foster home, Ricky is learning that he is safe and that the people around him will be there for him every day. His wonderful foster family is patiently showing him that visitors are kind, that gentle hands bring comfort, and that love can be a consistent and reliable part of life. Each day he grows a little braver. When Ricky feels secure with his people, his true personality shines through. He becomes an incredibly devoted and affectionate companion who forms deep bonds with those he trusts. Ricky loves being close to his family and takes his role very seriously. Because Ricky is still adjusting to the world, he would do best in a mature home without small children. Quick movements and unexpected activity can still startle him, so a calm, low-traffic household will help him continue to build confidence and feel safe. Ricky is doing well living with the other dogs in his foster home and is learning a lot from them. He enjoys running around the fenced yard and loves keeping an eye on the neighborhood. If another dog passes by, Ricky is happy to bark and let everyone know he’s on watch and doing his part to keep his family safe! He also takes cues well from the larger dogs in the home, which helps him feel more comfortable. Ricky is currently working on potty training. Because he’s still learning and can get very excited, he may occasionally have accidents. With patience, routine, encouragement, and medication we hope he will continue to improve as he settles into a stable home environment. Ricky is looking for a patient, loving family who will give him the time he needs to fully blossom. In return, you’ll gain a loyal little companion whose devotion will be truly special. If you’re ready to help a deserving dog discover the joy of a safe and loving forever home, Ricky might just be the perfect addition to your family. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information.Meet Keia! This adorable 4-year-old pup weighs just 12 pounds and is as sweet as they come. Keia found her way to rescue when her beloved owner had to move into a nursing home, and now she’s ready to find her forever home! Keia may be a little shy when meeting new people, but give her just a few minutes and her gentle, loving personality shines through. She absolutely adores belly rubs, head scratches, and spending time with her humans. Walks are one of her favorite things, and she also enjoys exploring the yard. She’s house trained, sleeps soundly through the night, and comes when called. She already knows her name and is eager to please. With her easy-going nature and affectionate heart, Keia would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a super sweet, loyal, easy-going friend. If you’re searching for a calm, loving dog to add to your family, Keia might just be your perfect match! The adoption fee for Keia is $450, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped.  Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply. Like any of our dogs, Keia would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, regular grooming, activity and mental stimulation that her breed needs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.April 4, 2026, 5:45 am

Story
Tia got her first groom last Friday and did great! This special girl has come so far since joining rescue. Tia is a 10yr old Maltese mix who was surrendered from a puppy mill back in November. Shes been working in her socializing and learning what a house is. Tia is not your typical dog. She does well with puppy pads and does enjoy her outside time. Tia is still learning that humans are ok. And we don't blame her. When you spend the first 7yrs of your life in a puppy mill; it changes you. Thankfully her puppy having days are over. Tia is fully vetted. She will require a calm home with understanding people who get that shes not a lap dog. Her family will need to understand that she has to take things at her pace. Her kennel is her safe spot. She loves to watch her foster siblings and resident dogs from the comfort of her doggy bed in the safety of her kennel. She's been thru somethings and patience is the key with her. Her trust cant be rushed, it has to be earned. She would do best with another dog her size for a companion that she can learn from. She maybe older but she deserves to live the rest of her life in comfort and safety. With unconditional love, patience and understanding. #nonprofitanimalrescue #puppymillsurvivor #fosteringsaveslives #cuteness #fosterpuppylove #fosterpuppiesofinstagram #survivorstrong
