Meet Baxter! If you're searching for a loving new family member, your search ends here. Baxter is a 12-pound, 2-3-year-old Malti Tzu (a Maltese and Shih Tzu mix), and he embodies all the best, sweetest traits of both breeds. Baxter was found as a stray in Nashville after someone suspected he’d been hit by a car and brought him to the emergency vet. Thankfully, there were no broken bones, but he is currently healing from a sore back leg. (He’ll have X-rays taken when he’s neutered on 7/7.) We wish Baxter could tell us what happened and how he ended up on his own—it’s hard to imagine any family not wanting such a sweet boy. Baxter is both a people-lover and a dog’s dog! He loves to play and would thrive with a young, active canine companion in his forever home. He adores people and always wants to be by your side—be prepared to never be alone again! His sore leg doesn’t slow him down; he still jumps on the furniture to be with his foster mom whenever steps are available. This young gentleman walks well on a leash and is fully housebroken. He loves going on adventures and rides like a champ in the car—he even prefers the back seat, though he’s happy on a passenger’s lap, too! He weighs about 12 pounds and is approximately 10 years old. (More photos to follow once he is settled) Junior was a stray at the shelter. He was being held for stray hold, then rescue placement due to his severe dental disease! He will most likely need a full mouth extraction. Junior is currently decompressing at his foster home in Newport News. He will have his dental, neuter and removal of a nodule on his tail on or before June 15th. For now he is resting, eating soft food and making new friends with his foster siblings. He will need a week or so to recover then he will be ready for adoption. She comes to us from a puppy mill in Pennsylvania. She is very new in rescue but is warming up and enjoying life as a pet not property. Her tail wags all the time and she is very interested in her new surroundings. She will need a calm, patient home to allow her to adjust to pet life. A fenced yard is not required but will be an asset to her. She has never walked on leash. She has been a money maker for 7 years. She deserves a slow approach from a family who will not rush her and give her an opportunity to learn and grow. She is very sweet and will definitely make a wonderful pet in time. She just needs time. Sally is temporarily staying in Norfolk with a foster near the Snip Squad, our new and fabulous low cost clinic. This clinic allows us to take in dogs from puppy mills who have had no care and typically need many teeth extracted. Without their help, the rescue could not afford to help dogs like Sally. While the Snip Squad does give a wonderful discount her vetting to get to Virginia plus the cost of the dental and spay will total more than $1500. Sally will be spayed and have a dental performed on Monday, June 22nd then move to her foster home when she is ready. After she recovers, she will be ready for her new life with her new family. He is learning new people are not scary as well as learning how to handle his big feelings. He has been started on anxiety medication to help him process those big feelings. He is a complete love bug at home. He loves sitting with his person and watching TV. Fat Tony will need a patient home. He will need to continue the foundational training he is currently learning. His trainer Morgan is more than happy to give you a free lesson (or two) when you adopt him. He just needs someone to give him a chance. UPDATE: Fat Tony is currently in a Board and Train program at Arf Limits working on his leash aggression and behavior. Watch our website for updates and videos on his progression. Fat Tony is new in rescue. He is a 3 year old, 12 pound, Maltese (mix). He is perfect in every way except one...he doesn't like other dogs...his "inner Brooklyn" starts to show... In all seriousness, he does not like other dogs and is very reactive on leash when he meets other dogs. He will need to be in an adult only home as an only dog and a fence will be required for adoption. A privacy fence would be ideal. Fat Tony just wants to be with his people. Bo is an affectionate and loyal canine companion known for his calm and composed demeanor. He would thrive in a household without younger children, as the excitement they bring can cause him some stress. Bo enjoys outdoor activities and car rides, and he will alert you when someone is at the door to ensure your safety. While he does not bark excessively, he is well-trained and can be taught additional commands with the right guidance. I wish I had more time to dedicate to his training. Although Bo does not particularly enjoy having his nails trimmed, regular walks can help maintain his paw health.
