Story
Did you ever hear a big dog cry?It registers at a tone that breaks your heart, and lately, our hearts have been shattered.Moby is a 3-year-old French Mastiff -- 130 pounds of pure goodness with excellent house, leash, and car manners. He's a giant marshmallow of a dog who wouldn't know mean or aggressive if he tripped over it. And honestly, he's likely to trip, because not one of those 130 pounds could be described as graceful.Moby is about 90% squishy couch potato and 10% goofy, joyful play. He loves soccer, fetch, and tug. He loves those brief moments when happiness takes over and he forgets that he's built like a compact SUV. And honestly, we think that's where the problem lies. Not everyone is prepared for 130 pounds of enthusiastic play. Not everyone is prepared for the drool that inevitably follows.Because of that, Moby has now been surrendered three times. He has NOT been surrendered because he's done anything wrong. He's been surrendered because he's big, because he slobbers, and because sometimes he gets excited and forgets he isn't a lapdog.Moby's lived with young children and adored them. He's loved their friends. He's welcomed everyone into his life with the same open-hearted enthusiasm he brings to everything he does. Moby's a gentle giant, but even the gentlest giant occasionally steps on a toe, bumps into someone while reaching for a toy, or takes up a little more room than expected. The other day at the shelter, Moby was outside in his yard when a little terrier came racing up to the fence. The tiny dog's hair stood straight up, his teeth were bared, and his expression suggested that Moby's very existence was deeply, personally offensive. Moby stopped what he was doing, slowly lowered himself into a play bow, wagged his tail, and watched the furious little dog with curiosity. When Moby realized the terrier had no interest in playing, he simply turned around and walked away. That's who Moby is.Moby is gentle, patient, affectionate, and remarkably sensitive. He assumes every stranger is a potential friend and every dog is a potential playmate. He approaches the world with optimism, kindness, and a level of trust that is both beautiful and heartbreaking.Right now, Moby's confused because the people he loves keep disappearing. Every time he settles into a home, it seems to vanish beneath his feet.Moby doesn't need a mansion, and he doesn't need someone who never notices drool. He simply needs someone who understands that loving a giant dog comes with giant-dog realities. There will be slobber. There will be the occasional stepped-on toe. There will be moments when 130 pounds of enthusiasm comes barreling toward a toy.But there will also be unwavering loyalty, endless affection, and a dog whose entire being seems powered by love.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA.
