Story
"Bongo is an approximately 7-8 month, old medium sized (42 pound), perfectly mixed boy who is lucky to be alive today. He was picked up as a stray and landed at a high intake shelter in Houston and was never claimed. Bongo was completely terrified there and spent most of his time submissively and quietly cowering in his kennel trying to be invisible, flinching when anyone went to touch him. He was euthanasia listed after only 10 days. The pictures and descriptions from this part of his life are heartbreaking. We are so glad we took a chance on this guy. We’ve learned that he just feels very deeply, was very depressed and scared, and he was in desperate need of decompression time to start coming out of his shell. He’s actually a very sweet, smart boy who is learning quickly and soaks up love and stability like he’s making up for lost time. He is learning about the good side of humanity. Noteworthy to us is, despite however he was treated before, he has been totally non-aggressive and wanting to trust humans even when fearful and unsure. Because of this and his age, we know he will continue to amaze us all with his resilience. Bongo likes other dogs and we do think he would do well with another established dog(s) in his forever home. He’s healthy, doing well on his crate/housetraining with his routine, and walks decently on a leash. He will do best with patient adopters in a quiet-ish home that are willing to give him consistency and help him to become braver and more confident over time. He loves snacks, likes snuggles once he knows the snuggler is nice to him, and is learning how to play with toys." Bongo is being fostered in Fort Collins, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs.* You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/bongo/. Story
Video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6FPwMardAfI Twister is such a beautiful girl. She found herself pregnant at a small high kill shelter. The stress of being at the shelter made her deliver still born puppies. After grieving the loss, she has now blossomed into a happy, healthy girl who cannot wait to find her forever home. She is great with dogs of all sizes and loves going on group walks with the rest of the gang. She is also great with cats. She will be your best friend. Will you be hers? She is currently still in Oklahoma where she was rescued but she can only be adopted out of state where people treat animals well. She has to be prepaid and picked up directly from transport at one of our transport drop off locations below. If things don't work out for some reason, which rarely ever happens, we will either find a local foster to take her in or she will go back to Oklahoma on our next transport until a new home is found. Note: No dogs are advertised as potty-trained because most dogs need at least some re-training in a new environment and after being in a shelter/rescue environment/strays. www.facebook.com/desideratarescue (copy and paste into a new browser window) Transport locations: - Washington State (Kennewick, Spokane, Tumwater, Tacoma, Tukwila, Lynnwood/Edmonds, Bellingham) - Oregon (Portland and Springfield) - Colorado (Ft Lupton) - Idaho (Heyburn and Boise/Meridian) - Utah (Ogden) - Wyoming (Evanston, Rock Springs, Laramie) - Montana (Missoula) - Illinois (Vandalia, Springfield, Chicago) - Indiana (Spiceland, Burn Harbor) - Michigan (St Joseph, Battle Creek, Ann Arbor) - Wisconsin (Madison, Wausau, Eau Claire, Appleton, Milwaukee) - Minnesota (Minneapolis/St Paul) - Iowa (Des Moines) - Ohio (Columbus and London) - Pennsylvania (Erie, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg) - New York (Buffalo and Albany) - Connecticut (Enfield) - New Jersey (Bedminster) - Nevada (Las Vegas) - Arizona (Flagstaff) - Vermont (Brattleboro) Vetting: spayed, microchipped, rabies vaccine, bordetella vaccine, dhpp vaccine x 3, lepto vaccine x 2, dewormed several times, on monthly flea and tick prevention, on monthly heartworm protection. Adoption Fee: $475 When available, all animals are fixed in accordance with Colorado law, up to date on vaccines (may need boosters), and microchipped! What we know: Transferred from Aurora Animal Shelter, litter of 3 — 2M, 1F. 6 weeks, too young to be fixed or vaccinated for rabies. One apparently healthy, one possible heart murmur, one heart murmur. From the foster: I'm Bruce...Bruce “All mighty”, as my fosters call me. I think they name me that, because I have a heart murmur that was diagnosed early. I am on and probably will be on mediation for awhile if not forever and I feel great. Don't let that steer you away, cause I am a normal healthy puppy. I love to play with my brother and foster siblings. I am very smart...I know how to sit, pee on pads (if the back door is not open) and even go outside when I need to. I definitely love my nap time too. I sleep in a big play pen at night with my brother, but when he is not here I get lonely....so if you have extra room in your bed I would be greatly appreciative. I sure do love to sleep at your feet or on you. I am very loyal. I think that is my best quality for sure. Please come and visit me, I would love to make you my forever family!!!! www.coloradopuppy.org/how-to-adopt

Story
Adoption Fee: $475 When available, all animals are fixed in accordance with Colorado law, up to date on vaccines (may need boosters), and microchipped! What we know: Transferred from Aurora Animal Shelter at 6 weeks old, litter of 3 — 2M, 1F. Bullseye was diagnosed with mitral valve dysplasia and a ventricular septal defect (VSD) in December 2025. A VSD is a hole caused by a malformation of the wall that separates the left and right ventricles. When there is a hole between the ventricles, blood is allowed to re-visit the lungs and the left side of the heart without going to the body. This causes a volume and pressure overload of the left side of the heart. Bullseye was started on Atenolol This medication has been prescribed to prevent tachycardia (fast heart rates). Tachycardia causes increased stress on the heart muscle as well as increased energy needs of the myocardial cells. Preventing this will help keep the myocardium healthier for longer. Puppy #968 will need to continue echo rechecks and stay on Atenolol until further notice from cardiologist. From the foster: I'm Bullseye, my silly foster daddy thought the dot on my back looked like a bullseye and there you have it...that is what they call me. I to, like my brother, have a heart mumur that I take meds for. I don't understand why, cause I feel great and act no different than these other dogs that I am staying with. I love to play, I'm interested in watching TV only if something good is on. I like to talk a little when I play as well, I hope that is ok. I am working on going outside to pee, but I like to drink a lot of water. Sometimes laying by the water dish is my favorite spot in the house. All I need is your love and a kind heart, please pick me to be your forever puppy!!! www.coloradopuppy.org/how-to-adopt

Story
Layka is a delightful young female mixed breed  born August 27, 2021, weighing 50 pounds.  Layka a zest for life and an infectious enthusiasm that will brighten any home. Born with a naturally happy and outgoing personality, Layka thrives on adventure and loves the thrill of exploring new places. Her playful spirit and love for cuddles make her an ideal companion for families who enjoy an active lifestyle and plenty of affection. Layka is best suited for a household where she can be the only dog, allowing her to soak up all the love and attention she deserves. While she is naturally joyful and affectionate, Layka will benefit from socialization and training to help her adjust to her new environment and become the best version of herself. Our In-Home Experience with the Lovely Layka Layka is a delightful and silly girl who will undoubtedly capture your heart, one laugh at a time. From the moment she arrived at our home, her curiosity was evident—she sniffed every inch of the place and quickly decided that the couch was her favorite spot. A Day in the Life of Layka Layka's daily routine is a charming mix of relaxation and playful energy. About 75% of her day is spent as a content couch potato, while the remaining 25% is dedicated to her puppy zoomies, where she eagerly wants to play. Her play mode often involves heading to the backyard for a game of "fetch" with her Kong ball. Fetch deserves quotation marks because, more often than not, Layka ends up throwing the ball in the air herself and chasing it around like an exuberant baby kangaroo. She sprints full speed from one end of the yard to the other, taking frequent pit stops at the kitchen water dish for huge, refreshing slurps. It's essential to have a nice big bowl because Layka loves her water! After about 10-15 minutes of this energetic play, she sprints back inside, bringing her ball to the couch as a signal that she's all tuckered out. A Perfect Work-From-Home Companion I work from home, and Layka has proven to be a wonderful coworker. She spends her time in the living room, keeping an eye on passersby from the window. Every half hour or so, she trots into my office for a brief session of belly rubs and kisses before returning to her relaxing routine. Having Layka around has made my workdays much more enjoyable. Settling In and House Training Layka is house-trained, although she did have a couple of accidents during her first week with us, which we attributed to being in a new environment. She quickly learned to stand by the back door and gaze at us when she wanted to be let outside. Occasionally, she just wanted to enjoy the sunshine. When ready to come back in, she would sit politely at the door and give a short little bark to let us know. Overall, Layka has brought endless joy and laughter into our home. Her playful antics and loving demeanor have made her a beloved member of our household. By welcoming Layka into your home, you're inviting a happy and playful companion into your life. Her adventurous spirit and affectionate nature are sure to fill your days with joy and warmth. If you're ready for a lively and loving furry friend, Layka might just be the perfect match for your family! If interested please go to our website and fill out an application. Story
After a few transitions, Nova is ready to settle into a new home! She is a friendly girl with lots of love to give and she will appreciate an adopter that can be home with her often as she gets accustomed to her new routine. Nova appears a bit insecure around other dogs, so if entering a multi-dog home, we are requiring a doggie meet-and-greet here at the shelter to help ensure it`s a good fit. At this time, HSBV will only rehome Nova to a family without children or with children over the age of 10.
