When Brownie arrived at the shelter, her future looked heartbreakingly uncertain.
She had been given one of the labels that so many frightened cats receive: "feral." To the people passing her kennel, that single word made it seem as though she didn't want human connection. That she wasn't adoptable. That she belonged on the list of cats everyone overlooked.
But labels don't tell stories.
And they certainly didn't tell Brownie's.
Behind those wide, cautious eyes was not a feral cat. She was a cat who had learned that the world could be scary. A cat overwhelmed by the noise of barking dogs, clanging kennel doors, and strangers reaching into her space. She wasn't hissing because she was mean. She wasn't hiding because she didn't care.

At a high-kill shelter, fear can be mistaken for something else. Time is short, space is limited, and shy cats often don't get the chance to show who they really are.
Thankfully, Brownie was given that chance.
