Story
*This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Fanny, whose foster parents are calling her Annie, is a sweet older girl with a calm, gentle, and even-tempered personality. With her low energy level and love of companionship, she’s perfect for someone looking for a relaxed sidekick. Although she lives peacefully with other small dogs in her foster home, she would be fine as the only dog in the home because she enjoys human companionship. Annie enjoys snuggling up next to you on the couch and likes to follow you around to make sure she’s not missing anything! Annie is a happy girl whose tail is always wagging. Annie is leash trained and enjoys taking walks, and she has started showing some interest in exploring toys and tennis balls. She is potty trained and does her business quickly when outside, and she is also trained to use potty pads inside! Annie is generally quiet, but she will bark when first put into her crate when left home alone. She sleeps quietly through the night in her crate. Annie was found as a stray just before a recent freeze in Texas. Someone had posted asking for help, and thankfully she was rescued in time. She was very underweight when found, and after a vet visit it was discovered she needed to begin heart medication, her foster can tell you more about her heart condition. Since starting her medication, Annie has done has been gaining weight, feeling stronger, and shows no symptoms of her heart condition. She will continue to need heart medication for the remainder of her life. She has a great appetite, and her foster parents are working on putting a few more pounds on her. Annie also has some hearing loss. Annie is sweet gentle older girl who just wants and deserves a safe loving home where she can relax and be cared for. She has been through a lot, and now she’s ready for a stable forever family who will continue giving her the love and medical care she needs. Annie would make a wonderful low-key companion for someone who appreciates a loyal little shadow by their side! She would love a home without young children and where her people are home most of the time. Because of her barking when first left alone, she would not be a candidate for an apartment with shared walls. Even though Annie will require some ongoing heart medication, don’t let that deter you from filling out an application because she still has so much love to give and life to live. Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and recommendations to keep your Senior dog in top shape. —— These special animals are looking for loving homes and dedicated supporters to help them thrive. Whether they have a chronic condition, require ongoing treatment, or need extra attention to stay comfortable, they are just as full of love as any other pet. You can make a difference by adopting one of these amazing animals or setting up a recurring donation to ensure they receive the medical care they need. Every contribution helps give them the second chance they deserve!

Story
Lily comes into rescue from a recent breeder release transport. She likely spent her life in a kennel so every day things are all brand new to her. Even with this unknown past, she is very brave and slowly, at her own pace, experiencing all these new things. After a couple of days, she was ready to begin exploring around the house. As she became more comfortable, her confidence grew. Once the weather got a little warmer, I started to take her outside to go potty. We are still working on potty training, but she is doing well. Outside is a big scary place with so many things that are new to her. Every day, she shows just how resilient she is, expanding her area to beyond my yard enjoying all the smells. Lily has adjusted well to a collar, harness and leash. Lily is initially shy and timid but has come to love being held, getting pets, belly rubs and ear scratches. In return, she will give kisses and loves to snuggle in your lap. Lily gets very excited when it is mealtime. She really shows her personality when I am preparing her food. It is so rewarding to see her tail wagging more. She loves to be held and be near her person. When I need to go out, Lily is kenneled. She does very well keeping her kennel clean and is quiet. In the beginning, I kenneled her at night. She would whimper a bit but settled quickly. She has now graduated to sleeping in the bed with me. Lily sleeps through the night snuggled close to me. Lily is looking for a quiet home to spend her golden years. She would probably do well with older, respectful children. Younger kids may be a bit much for her. Currently, she has not met another dog while in foster care. Her current foster home is very quiet where she gets all the attention.

Story
Wrangler is making the trek to Minnesota to find his forever home! After a mysterious situation where he would eat a lot but not gain weight, he was surrendered into rescue. Upon further investigation, it was found that he has a (super manageable) condition called EPI (Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency). He gets a powder sprinkled on his meals and is good to go! This will be important to maintain his health for the rest of his days. This doesn't slow Wrangler down one bit! He is a bouncy fun-loving and playful guy who enjoys teasing the new pups in the home and romping around with ANYONE that will play with him. He is super friendly, eager to please, goofy and even knows how to walk nicely on a leash. He is crate trained and is used to going outside to do his business with a doggy door, so might need some support with learning in a new space. Wrangler would do great with getting some additional training for basic manners and is sure to make it a game! He has not met big dogs or cats yet, so slow introductions will be important to monitor how he does. Wrangler loves kids because they can match his goofy/playful energy! Wrangler is on the look out for a home that will help him stay healthy and give him all the love in the world. In turn, he will provide endless laughs and love! Wrangler is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 04/11/2026 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 8:30am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Click here to learn more about the FTA program. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments.
