MEET GUPPY! 🐾💜
Guppy came to us back in July at just ONE WEEK OLD alongside her mama and littermates. From the very beginning, this tiny girl has been surrounded by people who refused to give up on her. She was bottle-fed and nurtured throughout her puppyhood by an incredible foster family who have gone above and beyond to help her through some unexpected medical challenges. 🫶
Guppy is now 8 pounds, up to date on her vaccinations, and on heartworm prevention. She is expected to stay tiny, weighing no more than about 20 pounds full grown! She will be spayed and microchipped at a later date.
But Guppy's journey hasn't been quite as simple as your average puppy.
For weeks, Guppy struggled to keep down her food and water and had a chronic cough. Her foster family took her to multiple vet appointments, completed X-rays and follow-up X-rays, tried a Bailey chair for meals, and eventually completed a barium swallow test to figure out exactly what was going on.
At first, we thought Guppy might have megaesophagus. But we discovered something different — at the end of her esophagus, Guppy has a small, narrow, angled opening that makes swallowing more difficult for her.
And this is where her incredible foster family made ALL the difference. 💜
With guidance from her veterinarians, they discovered that keeping Guppy kenneled for a period of time to settle and relax after she eats and drinks allows everything to settle properly. And the results have been amazing. Her chronic cough disappeared. Her pneumonia disappeared. She stopped vomiting. And otherwise? Guppy is just a completely normal, happy little dog.
The best part? Her vets are confident that Guppy can live a completely normal life and have a normal lifespan. 🥹
Yes, her routine is a little different. Guppy can't have treats, pup cups, or water sitting out freely like most dogs. She needs a family who understands her routine and is willing to give her that little bit of extra care and structure.
But Guppy is SO much more than her medical needs. 💜
This girl loves nothing more than being close to her people. She loves to snuggle, cuddle, give kisses, and happily lounge on her back while she relaxes. If you're walking around the house, you can pretty much guarantee Guppy will be right under your feet because she wants to be wherever her human is! 😁
She is incredibly calm for a puppy, loves older children, and is the epitome of a lap dog. She doesn't care what you're doing — she just wants to be doing it with you.
And, even at her young age, Guppy is kennel and potty trained!
Guppy would love a family who understands and is patient with her needs, ideally someone who has experience with special-needs dogs or simply has the heart to give a tiny girl a little extra care and structure. Because at the end of the day, her medical routine is just one small part of who she is.
Guppy is a cuddler. A kisser. A tiny shadow. A happy puppy. And she is ready for someone to see all of that. 🥹💜
