Story
Cypress is a brindle and white pit mix, about a year old and roughly 55 pounds, right at that age where the puppy energy is still there but the grown dog is starting to show up underneath it. If you want to know what makes Cypress happy, hand him a ball. Fetch is the whole world to him. He will chase, bring it back, and ask you to do it again for as long as you are willing, and he is at his very best when he has a job like that to focus on. A family who likes to be outside and does not mind throwing a ball until their arm gives out is going to fit him perfectly. He already knows sit, and he is a smart dog who catches on quickly. Leash skills are the piece he is still working on. He pulls when he gets excited, which is most of the time at the shelter, and he would do well with an adopter who keeps up with that training and turns walks into part of the routine. A basic obedience class would be a great use of his first few months in a home. Cypress has not yet been tested with other dogs or with cats, so we would want to set up a slow, supervised meet and greet with any resident dog before he goes home. He has also not been tested with children, so introductions there should be slow and supervised as well. If you are looking for a fun, athletic young dog who will bring you the ball a thousand times and never get tired of it, come meet Cypress at Petersburg Animal Care and Control. We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 3pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Story
Baloo has been at the shelter since March, and he still comes to the front of his kennel for every person who walks past like this is the one he has been waiting on. He is a 1.5 year old blue pit bull, seventy five pounds. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm negative, so he is ready to go home the day he is matched. He is polite, he is easy to be around, and he is still the first one up when anybody comes through the door. What he wants is a person. He is people oriented in a way that shapes his whole day, and he would rather be near you doing nothing than be somewhere else doing something interesting. He is treat motivated and eager to learn, which makes training him genuinely fun, and he has a playful, puppyish side that has not worn off yet. He likes being active and he likes being worked with. Someone who wants a dog to teach things to is going to have a very good year with him. A few honest things before you apply. Baloo can get mouthy when he is excited. There is no intent behind it, he is a young dog telling you he is glad you are there, but seventy five pounds of enthusiasm is a lot to absorb, and that is why we are looking for a home without young children. He appears to do well with other dogs, though that comes from watching him here rather than from a formal introduction, so any resident dog would need a proper meeting first. He has never been assessed with cats, so we cannot tell you how he would do living with one. We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Story
Stop and look at those eyes. Axel Grease is an 8 month old puppy with a sleek silver blue coat and pale golden eyes that seem to look straight into you. People stop mid sentence when they meet him. Then he wiggles over asking for affection, and the deal is sealed. At heart he is still a baby. He is sweet, playful, and endlessly affectionate. He is dog friendly too, and a good romp with another pup is one of his favorite things. He already knows sit and is eager to learn more. Leash manners and keeping all four paws on the floor are works in progress, which is exactly what you would expect from a happy teenager who loves people this much. A puppy this smart and this loving just needs a family with the time to teach him. Bring the treats and a little patience, and Axel Grease will bring everything else. To meet Axel Grease, email adoptpetersburg@gmail.com.
