Story
Nikki is very sweet and once she starts to get comfortable with you, she is playful & occasionally wants to cuddle.Even at 10 yrs old, she wants a lot of exercise – jogging or 2+ mile walks at least 2 times a day. Even after walking 4 miles, she’s still not ready to pack it in, but can be satisfied with shorter walks if she’s allowed to stop & sniff (i.e., explore her environment). It would be best if the adoptive family is active and has a nice secure yard (especially at the base & around the gates) as Nikki is an escape artist and she will dig her way under a gate/fence. I’m not sure if she wants to escape to freedom or because there are yummy weeds (that she loves to eat) and squirrels on the other side. I had the opportunity to speak with one of Nikki’s former neighbors who said that she regularly roamed the neighborhood, but would go back to the gate at her house. This is one of neighbors who called TCAS because Nikki was stuck under the fence (during her last escape attempt) and crying out for quite a while. When we first brought her home, she basically followed us all over the house. She really didn’t like her bed/quiet area in the open family room and searched for a place that’s dark, quiet and confined (behind the couch, under a desk, in a corner in a dark room, etc.). She picked her “space” next to my daughter’s bed because it was narrow and dark. We finally gave up and put a bed there and that became her safe space where she would always retreat. She would come out to check to make sure that people were around, then go back to her safe space. Lately, she has been branching out and sleeping near us while we’re on the computer, etc. or on one of the dog beds in the family room. Early on, she seemed to want attention (she will paw at you and occasionally talks [like a husky] to demand attention). Now, she will come up and lay her head on our leg for attention. When she’s very comfortable, she will put her head on your leg or paw you, or bump up against you, for pets. She doesn’t seem to mind hugs and sometimes seems to lean into them. She doesn’t really know how to play with toys and shows no interest in balls. I’m not sure about playing with other dogs since my dogs don’t play with other dogs or each other. She is learning to play with people, and is learning that it’s not acceptable to try to nip at hands during play.On walks, I generally practice avoidance when I see a dog or a jogger because Nikki w
