Story
Meet Ember! This heartthrob has a goofy smile, the manners of a gentleman, and a heart of gold. This fragile soul spent WEEKS in a crowded shelter after being found wandering alone as a stray. The second he stepped through our door, he completely lit up. Within hours, he was following his foster like a tiny flickering shadow ~ smiling, tail wagging, tongue peeking out when he woke from naps. His foster mom says he's so well-behaved and so happy to finally be included in a family. Ember's ideal home has people who are around most of the time, want to take him on plenty of walks and fun adventures, and love to cuddle. He wants to spend most of his day on the couch with his humans, supervising any kitchen activities, and snacking on all the treats. When Ember wakes up from naps, his little tongue sticks out, like it's been searching for snacks in his sleep. As if that weren't cute enough, one ear tends to flip back in his sleep so he wakes up with lopsided ears to match his lopsided grin. Ember loves going for leash walks (in nice weather only - he's not big on snow and we don't blame him one bit!) and is equally happy to ride along in the car. He is housetrained and generally sleeps through the night. While his vision and hearing aren't perfect, he still bounds up and down stairs and can even jump up onto the couch. He doesn't need a ton of exercise, but he absoutely needs a ton of snuggles! After everything he’s been through, Ember still believes people will choose him. He's so ready to finally have someone to give all of his love to - could it be you? Ember is approximately 12 years old and 16 lbs. Fostered in Germantown, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
Meet Dexter! This absolute doll is a fluffy ball of love and affection. This precious gentleman has spent his entire life being passed around like an old sweater: worn out, tossed aside, rehomed again and again whenever he became “inconvenient.” His most recent stop was only a few short months, through no fault of his own. When Dexter arrived at Miri’s Haven, he was clutching the few squirrel toys he was dropped off with like a child holds a blanket. He was confused, shut down, and painfully thin. Yet when he saw the resident pups, his tail twitched…the smallest spark of “maybe this time will be different.” And it has been. Dexter is thriving in his foster home where he is finally being showered with the love he's deserved along. His personality is shining through: he’s a connoisseur of comfort ~ he loves all the beds and needs approximately seventeen blankets to rearrange until he achieves the perfect snuggle architecture. He gets along beautifully with foster mom’s two cats, loves sniffing all the smells on walks, and has even started to show off his playful side! His favorite toys are the small soft ones that are easy for him to hold in his mouth. After a lifetime of being ignored and neglected, Dexter loves being with his person. He's a top tier snuggler and will happily follow his foster mom from room to room like a tiny loving shadow. He loves being petted, scratches his back by wriggling on the carpet, and bringing his face close to yours while wagging his tail to tell you just how much he loves you. He also has the funniest and most adorable little barks and growls. Dexter would love a home with humans who are home most of the time, love to snuggle with him, and can provide structure and routine. He walks well on the leash but would love a fenced-in yard to explore. He would also love to join a home with at least one other dog to pal around with. He's good in the car, so feel free to take him with you when you go out on adventures. Dexter is housetrained but may need a little time to get used to the potty routine and schedule in his forever home. He will benefit from pee pads and/or belly bands in the interim. Dexter does best with a predictable routine and regular opportunities to go outside. He has some trouble hearing, so cuddling and soft treats will help supplement verbal praise when helping him adjust. He sleeps through the night like a champ with the cutest, softest little snores you've ever heard. Right now, Dexter is on a special diet to help him gain weight and soothe his stomach. His forever family will need to be dedicated to helping him finish filling out to a healthy weight - as well as giving him the love, attention, and affection he's missed out on his whole life! He's got a little bit of arthritis and some itchy skin, but he's on meds to help him control these issues. Dexter is a well-mannered, affectionate senior with plenty of personality and playfulness. He acts younger than his age and enjoys walks, playtime, sniffing outside, warm clothes for cold days outside, mealtime, and cozy time with his people. Friendly, gentle, and polite, he would make a wonderful companion for someone seeking a loving, low-drama dog with a big heart. He thrives with a consistent routine and does best in a home where extended periods away are limited or thoughtfully planned. Dexter is counting down the days until his forever family finds him, and we can't wait to see who's lucky enough to adopt this sweet soul. Could it be you? Dexter is approximately 13 years old and 15 lbs. Fostered in Germantown, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
A mysterious oracle has arrived at Miri’s Haven, and we are still determining whether we rescued a 12-year-old Shih Tzu or accidentally summoned a cursed Furby from 1998 who has come to observe humanity and snack. Furby is a fun, charming, fuzzy doggo. He has been enjoying his time in a foster home, but is hoping to find a forever home for the new year. He has lots of opinions. So far, here's what he's let his foster know about his likes and dislikes: Furby loves snacks (preferably delivered with reverence), gentle strolls (exercise but make it elegant), lap time (where he absorbs your secrets), scritches, and plush beds (plural… he has declared several thrones already). Furby does not enjoy baths, snow, rain, or strong wind (basically, anything where he will be wet or chilly). He does not love clothes, although he does look super handsome in a preppy sweater. Furby also gets anxious on car rides (perhaps because they mostly involve the V E T); he rides best if he’s in the back seat with a human companion. Furby arrived with cataracts, glaucoma, and ulcers on his eyes. Following several weeks of unsuccessful treatment, it was determined that Furby would fare better without his peepers (which weren't doing their job anyway). He is adjusting very well and does not let his blindness stop him. He walks with confidence and can handle a couple of small steps, especially going up. If there are multiple or steep steps, he’s happy to be carried up and down them instead. He is a great eater and a champion lap sitter. Furby gets along well with other dogs, big or small, and cats. He loves people and is very curious about the world. He enjoys plenty of grass-sniffing time and checking out every inch of the house for possible stray crumbs. He is housetrained, although if he isn’t taken out after a few polite requests, he may engage in some self-help. He does fine left home alone for reasonable periods of time and is always excited when someone comes to take him out for a potty break. Overall, he is a charming, friendly boy. Even the things he doesn’t like he will tolerate, especially if bribed with a treat or two. He has plenty to say about the world and can’t wait to share it with you. Furby is approximately 12 years old and 10 lbs. Fostered in Falls Church, VA Please apply at MirisHaven.org
