This is Charlie. He’s a 2-year-old, 13-pound Maltipoo with the softest curls and the biggest, bravest heart—one that’s still learning how to feel safe. Charlie was found alone in the desert. Abandoned. No explanation. No goodbye. Just fear, heat, and survival. Thankfully, he was rescued and brought to Del Mar Dog Rescue, where he’s been for the past three months learning that the world doesn’t always hurt. But healing isn’t linear—and for Charlie, it’s slow and tender. Charlie is very fearful of people, especially men. Loud voices, fast movements, unfamiliar energy—they overwhelm him. He doesn’t growl. He doesn’t snap. He doesn’t show aggression at all. Instead, he freezes. He hides. He waits for the danger to pass. Charlie is not difficult—he is deeply scared. His safe place? Our sofa. That’s where Charlie feels brave enough to breathe. On the sofa, he allows gentle pets. On the sofa, he lets himself be picked up. On the sofa, he shows glimpses of the dog he wants to be—sweet, curious, affectionate, quietly hopeful. That couch has become his sanctuary, his reminder that softness still exists. What Charlie needs now is not fixing. Not forcing. Not “training it out of him.” What Charlie needs is understanding. We are searching for a very specific kind of home for him: • An older woman with a calm, gentle presence • No men, no children • A quiet home with another friendly dog he can bond with and learn from • Someone patient enough to let Charlie set the pace • Someone who believes that love doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful Charlie thrives around other dogs. They help him feel safe. They show him what trust looks like. A canine companion will be essential for his confidence and emotional growth. This adoption is not about instant cuddles or overnight transformation. It’s about sitting nearby. Speaking softly. Respecting boundaries. While at the shelter, she was spayed and had a dental to get her ready for a fresh start. Agatha is currently on a two-week Frosted Fling, so we can learn more about her while she receives lots of TLC in the comfort of a home environment. Miss Beazley entered Palmdale Shelter as a stray, and when she wasn't claimed, we made her a Frosted Face. Super sweet and great with other dogs, it was only a matter of days before Miss Beazley was adopted and renamed Schnucki (German for sweetheart.) Miss Beazley was recently returned to our care due to no fault of her own. She is 9 years old and weighs 12 lbs. Here's what we've learned about her: * Very friendly and loves everyone, children included * Enjoys going for walks, to the dog park, and for stroller rides * Knows come, sit, and no * Adorably spins around when she hears the treat bag is being opened * House-trained * Sleeps through the night in a dog bed * Thinks FreshPet Chicken, rice, & peas is yummy! * Good with cats Miss Beazley is currently on a two-week Frosted Fling to give her a chance to decompress and receive extra TLC while she waits for her true forever family. 10-year-old Scotch arrived at the San Diego Humane Society through Humane Law Enforcement with a fractured hip and in need of additional medical care. A microchip helped locate his owners, but sadly, they chose not to reclaim him. We welcomed Scotch as a Frosted Face on February 5th, and almost immediately, he was selected for a two-week Frosted Fling. After everything he’s been through, we’re so grateful he’s now receiving plenty of TLC in a wonderful foster home. Here’s what we’ve learned so far about Scotch: * He is gentle and social, doing well with the two children and other dog in his foster home. * Good appetite and polite at mealtimes — no food aggression * Seems to be house-trained * Enjoys walks and is great on leash * Comfortable being alone and shows no separation anxiety * Content to sleep peacefully in his dog bed at night We'll share more as Scotch continues to settle into his foster home.
