Story
Panni - Please be sure to read Medical Notes below.A 3 1/3 year old girl who is truly lovely - her momma's family raves about her - she's calm, happy to be a lap dog, but can also be playful. Her mom's daughter reached out to Paws New England because her elderly mom was unable to properly care for Panni (see below re: IMHA). She has required medications for her IMHA condition, and it was not always possible for her mom to remember to give the medications.Panni just arrived at our foster home today, and so far she's doing quite well - obviously a little confused, so we will be watching her for the next week or so to get a real feeling for her personality and needs. She's ignoring the cat (who almost looks to be her size) and is doing quite well with the other dogs in the home. She'd be an amazing friend for someone who likes a do gon their lap!! If you think you may be interested in this adorable fluff ball, feel free to apply now, and as we learn more about her, we can most certainly keep you updated. Medical Note for Panni: IMHAPanni has a condition called immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). The good news is that she has responded remarkably well to treatment, which consists of two pills twice a day. The vet is currently working to wean her off this medication, as she is doing so well.IMHA is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks its own red blood cells. While this is a serious diagnosis, many dogs go on to live happy, full lives after treatment. There is a small chance (about 10–15%) that it could return, so her future family should be attentive to any changes and seek veterinary care right away if concerns arise.Panni is feeling great right now and is ready to enjoy life in a loving, committed home that understands her medical history and will continue to monitor her health.More info on IMHA: https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/cardiovascular/imha-immune-mediated-hemolytic-anemia-dogsMedications for her condition are not exorbitant - approx. $50 per month when needed. if needed, Paws NE woud be willing to assist with medication purchase.Name: PanniBreed: Shih TzuSex: FemaleAge: 3 1/2 years  (estimated)Weight: 17 lbsSpayed/Neutered: YesVaccinations: Up to dateHeartworm: Negative on recent testingMicrochipped: YesBASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS:Good with Children: YesGood with Dogs: YesGood with Cats: UnknownAdoption Fee: $500.00Location of dog currently:    Near Boston, MA (South Shore)IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Paws New England is a foster-based rescue; our dogs reside in various locations throughout the south & New England.  Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age-appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if needed.Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse, whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. Story
Meet Akira. Soft, sweet, and quietly charming, Akira is the definition of a lovebug.   Akira is the kind of dog who wants to be with you. On your lap. At your feet. Following you from room to room like it’s his full-time job. He loves being held, loves attention, and greets his people with pure joy when they come home. If you work from home, expect a coworker who thinks personal space is optional.   Inside the home, Akira is calm, respectful, and easy to live with. He’s mostly house-trained and does his business outside, with the occasional poop pad assist in one consistent spot. He’s crated at night and when needed, may protest briefly, but settles quickly. No destruction, no chaos.   He does well with other dogs and has a soft, polite play style. He’s a little submissive with bigger dogs and enjoys running around the yard, especially if there’s another dog nearby to bark at through the fence. He shares food and space just fine and shows no resource guarding.   Akira walks nicely on leash, rides calmly in the car, and knows “down,” his name, and a solid “no.” He’s still learning, but he’s eager and responsive.   Because Akira is still a young pup, he will need an active home that can provide daily exercise, structure, continued training, and engagement to help him grow into a well-rounded adult dog.   Akira will require regular grooming and coat maintenance to keep him comfortable and healthy. This includes routine brushing and professional grooming. He’s learning the ropes with grooming and will do best with someone patient who’s committed to keeping him on a consistent schedule.   He came from a tough start and is still figuring out toys and play, but what he lacks in toy obsession he more than makes up for in heart.   Sweet. Cuddly. Lovable. That’s Akira.   If you’re looking for a loyal little shadow who’s ready to grow alongside you, apply.   This dog is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (Please note: Puppies under 3 months old may not be sterilized prior to adoption. If this is the case, your adoption coordinator will provide guidance on the process.)   To adopt or learn more about this dog, you must complete an adoption application, which can be found on our website: www.sandypawsrescue.com.   PLEASE READ:     •    If a dog or puppy is listed, they are currently available for adoption. However, they may already be pending an adoption, and their profile may not yet reflect this.     •    All information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of the posting date.     •    Unless explicitly stated, Sandy Paws Rescue does not guarantee the breed of any dog. Breeds listed are educated guesses made by shelter staff, volunteers, or veterinarians. Many of our dogs are mixed breeds, often with pit bull-type genetics, resulting in a wide variety of physical traits and temperaments.   Our dogs come from various situations, such as kill shelters, owner surrenders, or as strays. It is likely both parents were mixed breeds as well.   Sandy Paws Rescue does not have a public shelter in Massachusetts. Our dogs reside in private foster homes or boarding kennels in the South until adopted. Many dogs are spoken for prior to transport or release from state-mandated isolation.   For information on adoption fees, procedures, or FAQs, visit our website: www.sandypawsrescue.com.   The FIRST step in adopting from Sandy Paws Rescue is to submit a completed adoption application. ##2627626##
