He has allergies, which are managed with daily medication and a vegetarian diet. Since starting this routine, his skin has greatly improved, and we've even been able to reduce the frequency of his medicated baths. Romeo also has dry eye and will need daily eye drops long-term to keep him comfortable. This sweet boy enjoys walks, making friends with calm dogs, and sharing quality cuddle time. Once he's had his exercise, Romeo's ideal afternoon involves lounging on the couch next to his favorite human. Romeo needs a patient adopter who understands that building trust takes time. He requires a muzzle for applying topical medications until a bond of trust is established. With consistent, gentle care, Romeo will flourish into the loving companion he's meant to be. April is an adorable, super-sweet young Shih Tzu (three-four years old). She came into the rescue with several other dogs from a puppy mill. She was diagnosed with a large bladder stone which was causing severe discomfort. She underwent surgery to remove the stone and has never looked back. Like most puppy mill Shih Tzus, April has really thrown herself into her new life as a pet. She’s full of joy and mischief. She soaks up belly rubs, cuddles, treats and toys. She’s up for anything new and loves every new dog and person she meets. Now that she’s found her footing, nothing phases her. That being said, she does not like being alone (understandably, as she never had been) and will cry incessantly if she’s left by herself. It’s fine if the humans are away as long as there’s at least one other dog with her. April is having fun making up for her lost puppy years. She’s very curious and will “investigate” anything within reach. Puppy proofing your home is essential. April is currently on a prescription diet to prevent a recurrence of bladder stones and requires daily lubricating eyedrops, which are very easy to administer. Her housbreaking is nearly complete - she’ll use a pad if absolutely necessary, but prefers regular trips outside especially if she has the example of other dogs! A fenced yard is a must as is at least one other dog in the home. She would prefer to be somewhere where there is someone at home more of the time than not. Meet Benji — a tiny, amazing little dog who sees with his heart and loves with his whole soul. Benji may not see with his eyes, but he has no trouble finding his way into your heart. This wonderful 18-month-old Shih Tzu mix weighs just 10 pounds, but his personality, courage, and sweetness are so much bigger than his size. He is truly amazing — gentle, loving, resilient, and full of quiet confidence. Benji lost his eyes due to an untreated disease before coming into care, but those painful days are behind him now. He has received veterinary treatment and is healthy, neutered, and microchipped, and he is ready for the beautiful life he always deserved. Benji does great in his foster home and gets along just wonderfully with everyone around him. He is good with other dogs, good with cats, and has a sweet, easygoing nature that makes him a joy to be near. Because he is small and blind, he would do best with children over age 8 who understand how to be careful, gentle, and respectful around him. He does not need pity — he simply needs kindness, patience, and people who see what we see: a happy, loving little companion who is already wonderful exactly as he is.
