Story
Two doors down, they're laughin' and drinkin' and having a party. Two doors down, they're not aware that I'm around. These song lyrics describe my previous life to the tee. I was an under socialized pooch whose world was very small. I spent all my days in a kennel, rarely getting the opportunity to get out and meet others. Now that I am with Rover Rescue, I am becoming more gregarious daily ‘cause you know that strangers are just friends waiting to happen. I am learning to enjoy the company of people of all ages. It was discovered at a recent adoption event, that I really like respectful young ‘uns. I was so disappointed when they had to go home without me. I am not quite a social butterfly…yet, but I reckon I will be the life of the party in no time. I do ask for attention from the people I know and love. Y’all, if you recognized the lyrics above, you may know the national treasure who sings them. I have the honor of being named after such an amazing country legend. Yes, my name is DOLLY. I grew up in the South, but don’t have any “Smoky Mountain Memories”. My paperwork says I was born over yonder in the hills of Kentucky and oh, my stars! I am a pedigree, whatever that means. I am registered with the United Kennel Club as a full blooded Treeing Walker Coonhound. It is plumb crazy as I have kin that goes back 7 generations. I have the documents to prove it. Those “Silver and Gold” papers didn’t amount to a hill of beans when I was surrendered to an animal shelter in Indiana so my owner could avoid animal cruelty charges. My intake weight was only 53 pounds. I currently weigh 71; however, the vet said I need to drop 5 pounds. My foster mom in Indiana got me as full as a tick. I am already starting to see some ribs now that I am getting lots of chances to stretch my legs. I am 3 years old as my birthday is 6/15/2021. The other DOLLY sings of a “Coat of Many Colors”. I have one too that is tri-colored: white, black and brown with spots galore. My foster momma says that I am as pretty as a peach and I have ears that you just want to wrap yourself up in. Now that I am in Illinois, I am living in high cotton. My foster family has promised to work “9 to 5” and even longer to find me the best home to call my own. I can be a solo artist in the house, but if I had my druthers, I would love to have a “Jolene” or Kenny Rogers dog to accompany me. I would really benefit from the company of a confident dog that could be my “Islands in the Stream” partner. I have not been tested with cats, may have too much personality for feline friends. It is quite obvious that I was never a house dog previously. I was scared of everything in and outside of the home, especially if it made loud noises. I still startle easily but have made great strides and have shown some great gumption. I now realize that a leash is a good thing and walks can be a hoot and there have been tail wags to prove it. Passing vehicles and lawn mowers still make me go cattywampus, but every trip shows further improvement. Car rides can be positive experiences and I will actually load by myself now. I still need to be convinced to get out at our destination. I was really proud of myself when I mastered the flight of steps in my foster home. I can now fly up and down them without a second thought. I almost got too big for my britches when I learned to sit and shake all in the same day. I am not very food motivated, but I do get a hankering for a piece of cheese while learning new things. With a consistent schedule, I am doing well with my potty training. My foster mom makes sure I have plenty of breaks throughout the day. I am very quiet in my crate and spend my alone time and bedtime confined. If you are looking for a girl that is as sweet as southern tea and “Will Always Love You”, call about me, DOLLY. You can reach my foster mom, Darla, on her home phone at 630/406-9405. She will answer any questions you may have and provide more information about me, DOLLY. My adoption fee is $225. Adoption fee includes: - microchip - spay/neuter - age appropriate vaccinations: Bordetella, DH(L)PP, rabies - heartworm preventive & flea/tick preventive - deworming

Story
Dixie is a 2.5-year-old coonhound mix who came to us from a Kentucky animal control. She is currently a little over 50lbs. Dixie is looking for a family that loves the howls of a hound! She is a sweet girl and seems to enjoy romping around with the dogs in the run next to her. She's very curious and excited about life. She does need work on leash manners as she tends to jump up as she gets excited to see people! Dixie has done well with meeting dogs, but is very loud, which some dogs do not enjoy.

Story
Sweet, sensitive, shy Penny seeks a quiet, loving, and patient retirement home; could it be yours? Miss Penny is estimated to be nearing eleven years of age and weighs in at 22 pounds. Her breed mix is unknown, and without a DNA test, we cannot say with certainty what breeds combined to create our beautiful girl, but we suspect Beagle and Jack Russell or other similar terriers in her family tree. This precious little lady was adopted from Pal's Place in June 2014 when she was about six months old. Ten years later, a now senior, mature Penny has been returned to Pal's Place and has again found herself searching for a family to spend her golden years with. Penny's previous adopters welcomed a new baby into their home several months ago, and Penny was having difficulty adjusting to the new, tiny human in the home. Penny was nervous and unsure around the infant. Her previous adopters felt she was living in a constant state of anxiety and stress and thought it best she be returned to the rescue for placement in a child-free home. Penny has been in the care of a Pal's Place foster home for several weeks now and is adjusting to her new reality. After losing the only family she's ever known after a decade, she was very scared, confused, and depressed, understandably so, when she first arrived. Her wonderful, nurturing foster parent has given Penny lots of time, patience, space, and love to decompress and acclimate to her foster home. At first, Penny was not interested in interacting with her foster parent at all and would do all she could to avoid them. After a few weeks, she slowly started getting comfortable and would accept a few pets from her new caregiver. She's slowly getting braver and more relaxed. Penny now follows her foster around the house, sits on the couch with them, and offers up some tail wags and smiles when greeting them. She is food-motivated, so many yummy, small, high-value treats have helped Penny bond with new humans. She also loves a good game of fetch with one of her stuffies, and Miss P's foster parent incorporates several short play sessions into her day to help facilitate trust and bonding. She is still spooked by quick or sudden movements of her foster parent and still prefers a very slow, deliberate approach. Penny is and most likely will always be extremely shy and skittish with new people and will need guardians who will understand this aspect of her temperament. She is housebroken, crate trained, and quiet and well-behaved in the home. Penny is being fostered in a home with several other dogs and gets along well with her temporary canine siblings. We feel she may adjust more quickly to her forever home if another dog is in the home. Many shy, nervous, or timid dogs thrive in homes with other dogs as they will look to other pups for cues, comfort, confidence, and support. However, this is not a requirement for her adoption as she has lived for the past ten years as the only dog in the home. Her ideal home is a quiet, adult-only environment with guardians willing and able to give her all the time, love, understanding, and patience she will need to adjust to a new home and new people. Guardians who will not expect her to be affectionate or lovey-dovey with them immediately and ones willing to put in the time and effort to earn her trust. While she may need some extra time and space to bond and trust, once she does, the love, affection, loyalty, playfulness, and companionship she'll return to you will be well worth the effort, and knowing you've helped heal her broken heart by offering her the retirement home she deserves will be incredibly rewarding for all. Penny is anxious for her happily ever after; please apply to meet her today! Penny is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date with vaccines, taking monthly flea and heartworm prevention, and is a very healthy mature pooch! Her adoption fee to the rescue is $275. She is in a foster home on Chicago's north side and can be seen by appointment only after an application has been submitted. For more information or an application, please email palsplace1@hotmail.com or visit palsplacerescue.org. Unfortunately, we cannot place holds on our dogs for any reason. Please do not apply unless you are willing and prepared to welcome a dog into your home within three days of applying. • Penny's adoption fee is $275. This fee helps cover any necessary medical care to prepare her for adoption. Your donation also helps save other animals like Penny from euthanasia. Pal's Place is a volunteer organization funded entirely by donations and adoption fees. 100% of our fees and donations go directly to the care of our rescued dogs. • Please visit palsplacerescue.org or email Palsplace1@hotmail.com for an adoption application with the dog's name in the subject line. Story
AVALON Attributes Likes some other dogs Housetrained Crate trained Needs a fence High energy This gorgeous young gal with movie-star looks is Avalon! Avalon is a beautiful and energetic beagle mix girl who would make a great companion for an avid walker, hiker, runner, or active family. A home with a yard where she can burn off her puppy energy by romping and playing would be ideal. Playtime with other dogs is a serious business for Avalon, and she does best at playing with another confident dog. Avalon is a beagle/boxer/terrier mix, and we’re guessing that she’ll weigh in the neighborhood of 50 pounds once she’s an adult. Because of her size, she’ll need supervision around smaller children but should be fine with older ones. She’s cautious around strangers and may sometimes bark but will warm up to them if given time to get to know them. She is also nervous about noises and new situations. Avalon is currently training to help her gain confidence. Avalon’s foster mom says that she a very smart girl and is picking up obedience basics such as “sit,” “wait,” and “come,” and is working on improving her leash manners. Avalon rides well in the car and goes to doggy daycare two or three days a week, where she really seems to enjoy hanging out and playing with her friends there. Her foster mom says she’s very food motivated and “eats like a vacuum” (show us a beagle who doesn’t!), so if there are other dogs in the house, she should be fed separately from them. When it’s time to go to sleep, Avalon is equally happy to snuggle up in a dog bed or people's bed – she just wants to be comfy! She’s housetrained with the use of a doggy door. If you’re looking to liven up your days with a sweet, affectionate, energetic companion, Avalon may be the dog you’ve been looking for! NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI). Please read our Standards for Adoption and the information about beagles and puppies before you submit an adoption application. Remember that owning a puppy is a full-time commitment and you must have the time to commit to a dog that will be with you for 12-17 years. Beagle puppies are cute - but they are very challenging. Puppies may eat your apartment (no refund of security deposit); people who are gone for more than 5 hours at a time will need to make dog walker, neighbor or doggie daycare arrangements. We discourage the adoption of puppies to families with children under the age of six, since puppies will chew toys, shoes, blankets, hands, feet and other important parts of your child's anatomy.

Toby is a 1 and 1/2 year old ginger beagle. He is very energetic and needs lots of exercise. He would do best as the only dog. He does play with the other dogs in the house but likes to be the alpha male and on occasion has growled at the other foster dog. He likes attention. He loves his toys and treats. This handsome beagle is looking for a home where he can be the center of attention and get plenty of exercise. NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI).
