Story
Apo, short for Apollo, was adopted from the Richardson Animal Shelter in 2020. His birthday is believed to be May 17, 2020. Apo is a healthy, playful boy with minimal medical issues. He had a closed reduction procedure for his hip in late 2020 and has been doing well. Earlier this year, he started having occasional allergy issues, likely related to grass or other outdoor allergens, so we keep him indoors most of the time. He is sweet, playful, affectionate, and loves being around people. He enjoys company, attention, and cuddling. Unfortunately, due to changes in our family situation, we can no longer give him the quality time and attention he deserves. We are looking for a caring home with someone who has time for him and would enjoy a loving boy who likes to play, cuddle, and be part of the family.

Story
Meet Kodak – The Biggest Adventure You'll Ever LOVE! Kodak is an adorably handsome Australian Cattle Dog and Wire-Haired Terrier mix with scruffy fur, an irresistible face, and ears that are impossible to forget. Smart, athletic, and full of personality, Kodak is looking for an active family that understands young working dogs and is excited to continue helping him become the incredible companion he's already proving he can be. Kodak combines some of the very best traits of both breeds. He has the intelligence, athleticism, and determination of an Australian Cattle Dog paired with the curiosity, confidence, and playful spirit of a terrier. He loves exploring the world, learning new things, playing with his toys, and being involved in whatever his people are doing. One of the most rewarding things about fostering Kodak has been watching him grow. Every week he becomes a little more confident, a little more settled, and a little more affectionate. While he still has all the enthusiasm you'd expect from a young puppy, he's learning how to channel that energy and is becoming a wonderful companion. Because Kodak is both intelligent and energetic, he thrives with physical exercise, mental stimulation, and opportunities to learn. Training sessions, hiking trails, puzzle toys, interactive games, and adventures with his family are all things he truly enjoys. He loves having a job to do and is happiest when he's included in daily life. Because of his natural herding instincts and youthful enthusiasm, Kodak would do best in a home with children 15 years of age or older. Like many herding breeds, he can become excited and may try to herd moving people, but he continues to make great progress with his manners and impulse control. He responds well to consistency, structure, and positive reinforcement, making him a fun and rewarding dog to train. Kodak has also made tremendous strides socially. He now enjoys interacting with other dogs in a much more relaxed and appropriate way and has become a playful, positive canine companion. He would do well with another confident, playful dog who enjoys an active lifestyle and can continue helping him build his social skills. His foster mom has also watched his softer side blossom. Kodak has become incredibly affectionate and now regularly seeks out pets, snuggles, and quiet time with his people after he's finished playing. He loves leaning against you for attention and has discovered just how wonderful it is to cuddle. Kodak is also discovering that new experiences aren't so scary. When meeting new people, he greets them with friendly tail wags and gentle curiosity. He may stay close to his foster mom for the first few minutes while he takes everything in, but it doesn't take long before he's happily accepting treats, asking for attention, and making new friends. His sweet, observant nature makes him a thoughtful puppy who simply likes to know he's safe before diving into new friendships. One moment that made his foster mom especially proud was his very first bath. She wasn't sure what to expect from such an energetic puppy, but Kodak surprised everyone by sitting perfectly still like the very best boy. He handled the entire experience with patience and trust, showing just how willing he is to learn and how much he wants to please. Beneath Kodak's playful puppy energy is an incredibly sweet, loyal dog who simply wants to be part of a family. He's already come so far in foster care, and it's exciting to imagine just how amazing he'll become as he continues to mature. The goofy puppy who once bounced through every situation is growing into a confident, affectionate companion who loves to play, loves to learn, and loves even harder. Kodak isn't looking for someone who expects perfection. He's looking for someone who sees the incredible potential in a smart young dog and wants to enjoy the journey together. The family willing to invest their time, patience, and love into Kodak will be rewarded with years of adventure, laughter, unwavering loyalty, and unconditional love. If you're looking for an active best friend who is equal parts adventure buddy and cuddle companion, Kodak just might be your perfect match. Kodak at a Glance Australian Cattle Dog/Wire-Haired Terrier Mix Neutered Male Born October 29, 2025 Approximately 18 pounds Crate trained and sleeps through the night in his crate Does great during bath time Dog-friendly and enjoys positive interactions with appropriately matched canine companions Friendly with new people, though a little shy at first Loves snuggles, affection, and being close to his people Best suited for children 15 years and older Smart, affectionate, active, and eager to learn To learn more about Kodak or to apply to adopt, please complete an application at www.legacyhumanesociety.org. Once your application is received, Kodak's foster mom will be in touch to answer your questions and tell you more about this wonderful young boy.  We do not have a facility to house the dogs in our program. They are all kept in foster homes until they are adopted. Therefore, if you are interested in adopting from LHS, please complete an online application at http://legacyhumanesociety.org/adoptfoster/adoption-application/ and we will contact you asap about the status of your application. Story
Meet Pip! Pip is an 8-year-old dog looking for a loving forever home. I adopted him from PetSmart six years ago when he was scared and didn’t trust anyone. With patience and love, he learned to trust and has become a loyal, devoted companion. Pip bonds strongly with women and is very protective of his person. He can be around men if they let him warm up at his own pace, especially when they’re seated. He would do best as the only pet in a quiet home with a patient single woman and no children. This is an incredibly difficult decision, but my daughter-in-law and grandchildren will soon be moving in with us, and one of them is allergic to both dogs and cats. Before surrendering Pip, I want to find him the loving, patient home he deserves. If you think you could be Pip’s forever person, please reach out.

Opie is being fostered in FL. Little Opie continues to be the cutest old man in the world. He loves staying on schedule with his meals and outside time. When it's a nice sunny day, he can be found relaxing in the grass. When he's indoors, Opie is either sharing the big cozy dog bed with Gracie (6 lbs. poodle) or snuggling in under the blankets in the guest room closet. The funniest thing is when we set him on the couch or the bed, he rolls around on his back until he wears himself out! Opie gets along with the dogs who are close to his size, but he does not like our big dog, Baker. As soon as Baker gets remotely close to Opie, he screeches and it scares everyone. Opie does great at the groomer - he needs a good grooming every month - and he's so handsome after his haircut. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Johnny is being fostered in VA. Only read about Johnny if you are looking for a gentle, small dog to add to your family! Johnny Update – April 1, 2026: Johnny has been doing very well! He has not needed to go to the vet since January! While he still has a bit of a head tilt due to vestibular syndrome (see information below), it is much improved and he is more and more likely to walk in a straight line instead of circling. He has been enjoying the warmer weather, and likes to wander in the yard now which he did not want to do when the weather was cold. He loves to eat and, before snack time at noon, he often will drool a little bit because he is so excited! And, at times, it seems like he is hearing a little bit better than he was – although there still is a hearing loss. For more information about this sweet boy, read what his foster home wrote about him in January 2026. See below. There are so many good things to share about Johnny but, first, his history. Johnny lost his Kerrville, Texas home on July 4th 2025 when his community experienced catastrophic flooding. Johnny landed in the area shelter and the shelter staff, once they determined Johnny’s Texas family was unable to care for him and realized Johnny was blind, reached out to the Blind Dog Rescue to request foster placement. Plans were made and Johnny soon traveled to his Virginia Blind Dog Rescue foster home. His transport to Virginia was long – two days of traveling one weekend, a week in a temporary foster home in Alabama, and then one more travel day to get to Virginia. Without exception, every driver plus his temporary foster family said Johnny is a great traveler and such a sweet boy. Now that you know his history, here are some good things to share about Johnny: -has a coat the color of a penny! So beautiful! -crate trained -good with other dogs -aware of cats but ignores -great eater -good traveler in the car -does well at the vet -loves head rubs -sleeps quietly all night -and is a very quiet dog during the day! He has barked just a few times since arriving in his foster home (that happens about once every other week, when he is excited about meal prep). If you are still interested in this special little guy, here are more details about Johnny, including his health history. Johnny quickly learned the daily routine in his foster home. He is waiting at our feet when breakfast and dinner are being prepared. He is also standing in the kitchen for mid-day snack. He knows every evening it is “sofatime” – a time when he is on the sofa with the other four dogs in the house and his foster mom too. He curls up and takes a nap, although does enjoy a head rub. And, at the end of the day, he goes right to sleep in his bed in his crate, and never makes a sound and sleeps all night. Johnny likes to sniff around outside but generally does his business and is ready to go back in. He is from Texas so is a little uncertain about wet and cool weather but he is getting acclimated! He needs to be carried up and down steps. The best thing about Johnny is his personality. While he sometimes enjoys playing and gets excited at mealtime, he is generally very low-key, very gentle, and sweet. He has started giving occasional kisses too. While not diagnosed with dementia, he is starting to show some signs that this may be an issue. For example, he will be taken outside and then stand there a while, like he is unsure why he is out there! Like many rescue dogs, especially seniors, Johnny has some medical issues that have needed to be addressed. When he arrived at his foster home, he was missing hair on his back and on top of his tail too, likely due to a former flea infestation. His hair is very slowly growing back. Johnny also has had dry skin and some small lumps and bumps like many older dogs have. His skin has improved and he is on daily fish oil to help. When he first arrived, Johnny needed a dental and also had two large lumps plus a small one removed. Johnny had those procedures completed and he did very well, with a good recovery. Then, in January 2026, a lump was removed on his left front paw. All these lumps were benign but of course he (like all dogs) need their lumps – and areas where lumps were removed - to be monitored. When Johnny first came to his foster home, he had a quiet, brief cough once or twice a day. The vet said this could be a mild trachea collapse, could be allergies, or could be mild bronchitis. At that point, because it was so infrequent, she said no further follow-up or treatment was needed. She also said his lungs were clear and his heart sounded good. Over time, the coughing has periodically increased in frequency and so, in January, Johnny had an x-ray which revealed that his heart is now enlarged. Also, an arrhythmia was detected that had not been heard before. He was diagnosed with early heart disease and this likely explains the increased coughing. He now takes Vetmedin and Benazepril daily. In early September, Johnny had a sudden onset of vestibular syndrome. For those interested in adopting Johnny and/or if you have questions about vestibular syndrome, speak with your vet. It is a relatively common condition. Johnny developed a head tilt to the left and began circling to the left. He also had nystagmus (rapid eye movements). His appetite was not affected; he still loves to eat. The vet said Johnny has a mild case of vestibular syndrome and his symptoms have improved (the nystagmus has almost disappeared). However, he still has a left head tilt (very slowly improving) and he still tends to walk in circles to the left, and this can make it challenging for him to walk on a leash. But recently he has just begun to turn his head to the right and sometimes walk to the right! The vet said in September he may have a lingering head tilt but he should not be circling as much as time passes. It is important to know that mild vestibular syndrome is not life-threatening. It is also important to know that there is a chance Johnny will continue to improve - and also a chance he will not. A couple pictures on Johnny’s profile on the BDRA website show his current head tilt/turn. Before Johnny had vestibular syndrome, he was great with housetraining. Once the vestibular symptoms started, he began to have occasional daily accidents in the house and this has continued. Johnny is taken out every 2 to 3 hours during the day and wears a belly band around the clock because his accidents are unpredictable. Johnny has also lost most of his hearing since arriving at his foster home. In addition, he cannot see at all. His eyes have some very minimal clear drainage at times but are currently healthy. His eye pressure is normal (no glaucoma) at this time and he does not have dry eye. He had eye ulcers when leaving the shelter but those have resolved. He does have fairly frequent instances of reverse sneezing. We don’t know Johnny’s history before he arrived at the Texas shelter and so – as it is with any rescue dog – we can’t predict what the future holds for his health. Anyone interested in adopting Johnny should speak with their vet about not only vestibular syndrome but also about heart disease. Johnny has not spent time with children and, although he is such a nice dog, he should be adopted in a home with older children or adults only. And he should always be supervised when he is with young children, as all dogs should be. If you think you can provide this sweet, gentle dog the wonderful forever home he deserves, complete an application today!
