Story
Gi Gi ACCT-A-241223 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Gi Gi must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by SATURDAY, MARCH 7th by 10:00 am. Should Gi Gi’s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging an animal.
Meet Gi Gi, a 6-year-old Akita who was surrendered to the shelter on due to housing issues. Having spent her whole life in a home, this fluffy, talkative girl is now adjusting to kennel life and looking for a fresh start with a family who can give her the stability she deserves.
According to her previous owner, Gi Gi has a calm, medium-energy personality and enjoys a nice balance of playtime and relaxation. She’s mostly housebroken, fully crate trained, and knows a long list of commands including sit, down, stay, leave it, and go potty. She loves soft, meaty treats and is very food motivated, which makes her eager to engage and learn. Her favorite activities include exploring outdoors, going for walks, hanging out with her people, and soaking up affection. One of her most special traits? She “talks back” and has quite the personality to share with her humans.
At the shelter, Gi Gi has been described as gentle, social, and affectionate. She leans into pets, nudges for treats, and offers adorable behaviors like sit pretty and speak. Staff and volunteers have shared that she walks well overall; though she can pull at times and may benefit from a no-pull harness and a physically strong handler. She’s tolerant for grooming and even enjoyed a spa day, standing nicely for brushing, washing, and blow drying. Outside, she’s been described as sweet and easy to handle, and she appears to be housetrained based on how promptly she relieves herself during walks.
Gi Gi has lived with another dog (LeBron) and shares a kennel well, but she has shown pushy or selective behaviors with some other dogs. She would likely do best as the only dog in the home or with a very slow, structured introduction using management tools like crates, gates and positive reinforcement. She is noted by her previous owners to be very friendly with strangers and children.
Gi Gi would love a home with space to stretch her legs. She is a beautiful, fluffy companion with a soft body and a heart ready to bond deeply with her people. For someone familiar with large breeds, or ideally Akitas, Gi Gi could be a wonderful, loyal addition to the family.

BEHAVIOR NOTES:
Walksheet notes:
2/12 - Very sweet, very easy to walk & loves Lebron
2/20 - Very easy
2/23 - Met Mebus, was pushy & showing teeth. Pulls, loves treats. Knows sit, paw & sit pretty. Can pull hard at times. Very sweet
2/27 - Strong, Take out with Lebron
3/1 - Can pull but knows "no" sweet girl who like to be pet. Food motivated. Mild issues on leash
On 2/25 per staff: Excellent for spa day- tolerant for brushing, blow dry and wash.
On 2/23 per staff: Kennel Presentation: barking in kennel standing on the bed, loose body, opened the door and pushed head into door low, making her mildly challenging to leash.
Leash Skills: pulls moderately, bouncy, soft and loose body, gentle pant. Bounded around in the snow.
Sociability: friendly, social, asks for pets and treats by nudging hands and pouch, offered behaviors like sit, sit pretty, speak. Pet on her back, neck, sides and head. Leans in for more
Play: did not do
Dog Interaction: met Meabus: pushy, nose bops and muzzle punches to the fence. Some showing of teeth. Would disengage easily, especially for a treat.
Likely needs a very slow intro to another dog, in a home that uses management tools like crates and baby gates.
Return to Kennel: easy
Color Level: exp gold
Recommendations and considerations: needs a physically strong handler, recommend. No pull harness to reduce pulling.
May be a nice choice for a first time Akita owner, although not for a first time (large) dog owner.
On 2/16 per volunteers: Ian and I had the best time with siblings Gigi and LeBron. The two share a kennel and were so happy to get outside together. Gigi and LeBron are gentle and quiet and mild mannered. On the larger side and very fluffy both permitted handling and appreciated pets. Each dog relieved themselves quickly outside, they seem housetrained! I was worried LeBron may be a challenge to walk considering his size but I had no problem. Both dogs really enjoyed our time outside and didn’t mind the snow or traffic or squirrels. Gigi and LeBron walk so well together and get along very well.
Per owner: Mostly housebroken & fully crate trained. Medium energy and sometimes pulls a little on the leash. Knows “Sit, Down, Lay down, No, Stay, Leave it & Go potty”. Enjoys playing with durable chew toys, stuffed animals, and Kong toys. Has separation anxiety, chews & gets into the trash can. Is reactive towards other dogs. Towards strangers and children is super friendly/loves them! Towards cats, it can depend on the situation.
