Moon ACCT-A-241514 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Moon must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by FRIDAY, February 6th at 10AM. Should Moon's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Moon is a fancy boy who was found by a kind stranger as a stray while they tried to locate his owners. Unfortunately, no one came forward looking for this guy, so he was brought to ACCT in hopes that he would find a new home.
Moon talks like you'd expect from a dog that looks like him, and his finder said that he did well with their children and small dog, only cautioning that Moon does not like his food being touched. We've seen some of his resource guarding in the shelter, but he's done a very good job at letting us know where he draws the line.
Behavior Notes
Moon's finder stated that he loves toys and balls, that he's a little jumpy, and that he has tons of energy.
1/20 During my morning walk through I walked up to Moon's kennel. He was low vocalizing ( Like husky talking/howling), As I got closer to his kennel he began to growl. I offered a treat and he took it gently. From the opening of the door I could see a frozen kong, he was hovering over it and low growling. I lifted up my hand without a treat and he snarled.
1/20 Behavior waiver for Resource guarding. Resource tested, he was eating a bowl of fresh pet. I stepped forward and he low-growled, continued to eat. Was able to lightly pet his back end and he continued to growl while also eating. Got a long pole to touch the food bowl while he was eating, he never escalated further than growl and hovering over the bowl.
Behavior Evaluation, 1/20 :
Kennel Presentation: At the front of the kennel vocalization/low grumbling. Ears forward, wide eyes and tail mid.
Leash Skills: No issues leashing up. Pulls mildly while on the leash, nose to the ground sniffing.
Sociability: Asocial. Only interacted with him when I was offering treats, moved away when I reached to consent-pet. Ears forward, closed mouth with low vocalizations ( talkative husky noises) Snatchy with treats. Knows sit and can catch the treat
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: Met Midnight Murphy. Through the fence he was growling with a tense body. On leash he was avoidant, growling when they came face to face.
Return to Kennel: Walked right into the kennel without hesitation.
Walk-sheet notes, 1/24 :
Moon was taken for walks on January 20th, 21st, and 22nd. On January 20th, he was noted to have medium energy and no behavioral issues. His handler called him a "good boy" who "wants to play" and had a "very slight pull" on the leash. On January 21st, he again showed medium energy with no issues. He was "easy back in" the kennel with a peanut butter bone, though it was noted he is "snatchy with treats." On January 22nd, he was noted to be "a lil anxious but [a] good boy," with a tendency to pace back and forth.
Volunteer notes, 1/31 :
"Moon is the perfect snow dog. He zoomed around the yard gleefully playing every game he could think of. He is a vocal pup which if you don’t understand husky speak, you might think he’s mad at you but he’s actually just chatting about his hopes, dreams, and woes. He is very treat motivated. He loved to chase ice blocks, balls, and running humans. He loved to get scritches. Moon is a very fun companion to have for an outdoor romp around.
When returning to the kennel, his dinner was present and he did guard his bowl. However, treats > dinner so we were able to distract him to get his leash off and then he could go eat his dinner. Otherwise, Moon even laid down in the snow to get scritches all over. He doesn’t mind fur clumps being pulled off and will even attempt to eat them before spitting them out. This is very true husky behavior."
Moon is very excited about snacks, and while he can be a little snatchy with his mouth, he has shown to be responsive to some basic commands, so we think he would enjoy furthering his education with games and mental enrichment in addition to wearing himself out during adventures.
Per staff on 2/1:
“Went to take a quick DNA swab of Moon. Opened the kennel door and gave him a treat which he ate. I was kneeling down and extended the swab and he took it in his mouth (I held onto the other end) and pulled it back from him, but a piece of it was in the kennel. I went and got a slow feeder and held that while he was licking it, and with my other hand got the piece of the swab on the kennel floor. I put the feeder down and as I stood up he growled and I closed the kennel door. Later I walked by and I gave him a treat which he took through the bars gently.”
