LEANA - 7-8 years old, 40 pounds, nervous in the shelter. After arriving at VBACAC as a stray Leana was in rather rough shape. After some much needed TLC, she is doing well. Leana has grey and white fur with dark spots all over the grey part. She has a tilt in her head with unknown origins and some worn teeth indicating she's not a young pup but also not a senior. Leana is a bit on the thin side but overall healthy and happy. She is now spayed as well. Yay! She is very reactive to the other dogs around her in the shelter so it might be best Leana be an only pet. If we learn otherwise, we will update this bio. Leana was friendly and easy to handle when outside of the kennel and away from other dogs. She defaults to a really nice SIT and her paw comes up almost immediately. She's def used to giving her paw for a treat or two, which she loves. Leana is still getting used to the shelter environment. When she enters a new home, she might also need some time getting used to a new home, family and routine. Give her time and attention and you'll surely see a loving and fun girl who just wants to be at your side. We are open daily 12-5 pm. Leana is currently in our medium dog adoption kennel. Come on in and meet her!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.June 1, 2025, 10:42 am

Story
ABBY -  1-5 years old, house trained, might be timid at first meeting, warms up quickly, good with kids, only pet. Abby (formerly known as Sesame Street) was previously adopted from us here at VBACAC and she’s back for not getting along with a new dog in the house.  She’s friendly and playful with kids. She is not a fan of other dogs in her home. Abby is young, active and loves to play, esp with plush and squeaky toys. When I met her, she pancaked to the floor but after a couple of treats I was able to slip my leash over her head and out we went.  In the yard, she showed more of that timidity, sniffing around and very aware of any and every noise she heard.  She quickly settled in a little, enough to chase a ball, kind of, and sit for a treat where I was able to catch those black floppy ears and her goofy but warm smile. This sweet girl has no problems riding in the car and can be trusted to roam free when left alone.  Abby is currently in our medium dog adoption kennel. Come on out to meet her!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.June 28, 2025, 4:49 pm

ARIEL - 1-5 years old, 55 pounds, friendly, dog social    It took Ariel only one hot minute to drop the stiff hesitant persona after he entered our shelter playgroup and allowed others to sniff him. He then started running, chasing and playing with the others. Ariel arrived at VBACAC as a stray so we are learning as we go with this big strong boy who has the brightest of bright white and darkest of dark black fur.  He has a sweet warm expression, deep dark eyes and inviting body wiggles. He loves attention from you or another dog.  He plays well although he does love a good chase and tackle! He rolled Peaches over a few times! So silly!  Ariel is hanging in our medium dog adoption kennel waiting to meet you!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 10, 2025, 2:41 pm

SEVEN -1-5 years old, 70 pounds, nervous in shelter.   Seven is a beautiful boy with light and dark brown fur all mixed throughout his body. He is nervous behind cage bars.   Whenever I walked by, I would throw treats to him. I didn't leave when he barked at me. I only threw more treats. Eventually the barking stopped and I got him.   Outside, Seven was curious and interested in the smells all around on the grass, benches, and agility equipment in the yard.  He came to me for treats. He was a bit hard when he grabbed the treat, so I ended up just tossing them to him…which he caught like a champ. Seven needs time to warm up to new people.  Take the time and allow him to get used to you and others. Slow and proper introductions will help ensure success in his becoming an important member of your family. After spending more and more time with Seven, I am seeing a very nice and seemingly well-mannered boy. He is perfect on the leash although he does have a nice pace. He will stop along the route investigating trees, bushes, mailboxes, and grass.   I also discovered Seven loves fetching...and he is also perfect at it! Excitedly he chases tennis balls and brings them right back to your feet! He looks up for the next one and off he goes again! I think his playtime motto is throw, retrieve, repeat. LOL   We don't know how he feels about other dogs so until we figure it out, bring any resident dog for a meet and greet and please be ready to supervise if it goes well. Also, let this big boy approach you. Let him proceed at his own pace. There’s no need to rush. Seven is currently in a back kennel so if you come into meet him and don’t see him, please just ask.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2025, 12:54 pm

Story
Kilo is a 5-6 year old, 75 pound, house-trained boy who lived with one family his entire life. He ended up in the shelter in November 2024 when his family had financial difficulties. The shelter is really wearing on him and he needs to find his forever home soon. We’ve found that for some reason, dogs with his color fur have a harder time getting adopted. But we know Kilo’s hero is out there somewhere!    We’ve really enjoyed getting to know Kilo since he came to the shelter. He’s always happy to see us and can’t wait to get out of the kennel and go on a walk.   — Kilo loves to chase balls and will even bring them back to you, but make sure you have a treat for him when he does!   — His family said he could be left alone in the house when no one was home.   — He is playful and enjoys all types of toys.   — Kilo loves to go for walks, but may need a little more leash training and will sometimes chase cats.   — Kilo previously lived in a home with no small children or other pets, and his family said this would be the best type of home for him.   Sometimes Kilo seems wary of strangers but warms up quickly when he gets to know you. If you have any questions about Kilo or want to meet him, please call 757-237-2430 to speak with a volunteer. Kilo is accepting visitors every day from 12 to 5. He’s currently in a back kennel so asked for him by name when you visit the shelter.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 20, 2025, 12:58 pm

FRIENDLY, OBEDIENT, COUCH POTATO, LOVES TO CUDDLE Foster Update! Tia has done amazing with the cats! She acts like she is the cats mom haha. She is potty trained, loves to play with plush toys and squeaky toys. She was a quiet girl in foster and never barked!? They loved having her in foster and had nothing but amazing things to say!      TIA - 1-5 years old, 45 pounds, house trained (if not left too long), playful   Tia was adopted from another shelter one year ago. Now they're moving and leaving her behind. Tia is a friendly girl who needs just a few moments to warm up to new people. Don't push it. She will come.  She is playful and enjoys plush and squeaky toys. She also showed us she is good with rolling around in the grass and mud so this tomboy girl is good with getting dirty! She likes going for walks but she is scared of cars. She is also nervous riding in cars. Tia enjoyed the company of the other dogs we introduced her to in our shelter playgroup. She sniffed them, allowed them to sniff her. She trotted around and smiled for photos when the camera came around.  SUPER CUTE! Tia has not lived with another dog though so supervision and management will be vital if there is a resident dog. Tia has, however, lived with a cat and everything was fine. She is house trained but if left for longer than 12 hours will have accidents and possibly destroy items. She is fine if left alone for shorter periods. Tia is hanging out in a back kennel for now so if you come in to meet her and don't see her, please just ask!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 23, 2025, 3:34 pm

MERCEDES - 10+ years old, 45 pounds, house trained, crate trained, friendly, moderate energy   Mercedes is a sweet senior girl looking for a calm, cuddly retirement home.    She was adopted from us a long time ago but has found her way back after her most recent owners had to surrender her due to apartment restrictions.    She is house trained and loves going for walks.   Mercedes has moderate energy so running and playing last only so long. I was happy to see some of that energy when we were together. She ran around the yard jubilantly as if she were a puppy.   Her smile made me smile and it will do the same to you!  Oh, and she was perfect on the leash, too!   Mercedes prefers older kids as she is known to tolerate children along with other dogs and cats. Slow and proper introductions are important for her.   She is crate trained along with being house trained.   Come on in to meet this pretty grey muzzle girl! Bring in any resident dog for a meet and greet and please be ready to supervise.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 17, 2025, 9:39 am

Story
DAISY MAE - 1 year old, 54 pounds, house trained,  Daisy is still a puppy at barely a year old and surrendered when her owner could no longer care for her.  She has tons of energy and is very playful.  She loves all kinds of toys, balls, squeaky, plush & tug. Although we are told she is good with children, we are recommending an adult only home as she can be rough with kids and has a tendency to guard high value items. She likes other dogs but does play very rough and will guard items from them. Daisy was barky at first but then out in the yard, she loved running and running and running, chasing tennis balls, stopping for treats and then running and chasing some more. Daisy Mae is looking for a very active family who will provide plenty of exercise, playtime and training to help curb some of her guarding issues. She is a hoot and in the right home, she will thrive. Daisy Mae is currently in our medium dog adoption kennel so just ask to meet her!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 21, 2025, 10:54 am

BOLT - 3 years old, 60 pounds, house trained, good with kids, dog selective, no cats Bolt is a young, handsome, large mixed breed boy. His black thick fur is soft. He has pretty amber eyes and along with white on his chest, he has a touch of white on a couple of his paws. Arriving bc his owner was in the military and had no one else to care for him, Bolt is nervous behind the cage bars. He stares and backs away. Once outside, however, he is a fun and friendly boy. He came right up to me, sniffed and licked my hand. So silly! It took him a few minutes to get used to the other dogs in playgroup. He let them know when they were too much for him.  *We vet our playgroup dogs so they all listened to him and backed away when he corrected them. After a short time, he was initiating chasing play with others. *We are recommending Bolt be an only pet. He has been known to get into trouble if left unattended so crate training is a good idea as he will steal food from counter tops and chew up paper. Bolt loves to play with toys including balls and tough toys. He will rip up stuffed ones. Bolt is currently in a back kennel so if you come in and don't see him, please just ask!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.June 19, 2025, 3:03 pm
