Story
Fifi was still just a pup when the Animal Control Officer showed up. She hadn't seen her humans in days. She waited and watched over her brother, a cat named Sal. Fifi still thought her people were coming back. Not realizing they were there to save her, she tried desperately to evade the uniformed intruder. She would not be bribed or tricked with sweet words and treats. She would not submit to go meekly along with her captor. Fifi would not abandon her brother; would not be taken from her home; would not give up on her family. Hunger and loneliness didn't matter. She was not giving up. Obviously Animal Control wasn't going to give up either. They were able to corral and get her safely to the Heritage Humane Society. Shaken. Scared. But also resilient. With heaps of patience, love, and time, the team at HHS slowly won her over. Fifi learned how to really trust a handful of us. We became her new humans. One at a time, she's invited her chosen humans into the Fifi inner circle. Anointing us with hugs, kisses, and ear nibbles. Pro-level snuggles. Mandatory if you're one of her humans. Off-limits if you're not. Not everyone makes it into the inner circle. But once you're in, you're all the way in. It always takes time, and sometimes it just isn't going to happen. She loves playing with toys, going for hikes, and couch potato time all the same. She can be mercurial. She can be aloof. She will be the most loyal companion you'll ever have. If, of course, you're one of the chosen.

Story
Do you like it when people mess with you while you're eating? Do you like it when people stick their hand in your food? How about if they keep crowding you and touching you while you're trying to enjoy a meal? Do you like when people do that stuff to you? Neither does Spud. This big galoot is dog friendly and a real charmer to new people he meets out and about. He might confuse the role of "pet dog" and "security guard" sometimes. But only when he is at home. And, let's be honest, if those kids entering your yard weren't invited...or if they were murderous grizzly bears...or even worse, a delivery driver dropping off a package, then you'd certainly be glad Spud was around to warn them well. Could he work on that a bit? Sure. And we're hoping you'll be as excited as he will be to start working on that once he gets home. He just needs to find that new home first. Come meet him and let's find out if his new home is your home.

Hey there, I'm Major! I'm just over a year old and full of life. I'm friendly, goofy, and always up for a good laugh. I love playing around, especially with other dogs - they're my best pals! Kids are pretty cool too, they have this energy that matches mine. I'm always ready for a fun game or a sweet cuddle. Life's a playground and I'm eager to explore it with a family that loves a good belly laugh as much as a heartfelt snuggle. Adopt me and let's make some joyful memories together!

Story
Emma is a delightful 5 year old terrier mix who is ready to trade in her days greeting customers for a life of relaxation and love. Though a bit shy at first, this sweet and friendly girl quickly warms up to new friends with gentle pets and playful tail wags. She's already housebroken, well-mannered, and enjoys the occasional game of fetch, making her the perfect companion for someone seeking a low-maintenance canine companion. After spending years as a cherished store dog, Emma is now looking for a calm and loving home where she can enjoy her golden years. She would do best in a quiet environment with patient individuals who can appreciate her subtle affection. If you're searching for a furry friend to shower with love and cuddles, Emma could be your perfect match!Notes from Emma's Foster Mom:FIRST DAYS AT HOME:When she first entered the house, she was low-key excited to explore and see everything. She quickly took to being petted, but she became very comfortable and settled after three days. The third day was when she started hopping in the bed at night.CAR RIDES:The only car ride I've brought her on was the car ride from the shelter. She was a bit excited at first, climbing around a bit and going through the bags supplied by HHS. For the last half of the 15 minute ride, she settled down with a chew toy and stayed relatively still. She does, of course, enjoy the windows down.BEHAVIOR AT HOME:Emma is a voracious chewer, but only chews on her toys. The tougher the toy, the better. She will abracadabra a tennis ball in 30 seconds flat. Not that she swallows any toy pieces, she's much too smart for that. She is quite housebroken; I leave her with free reign of the home while I am at work and she typically just sleeps on the couch. She never tears anything up or has any accidents. GENERAL RESPONSES:The only time that Emma is slightly stubborn is when she has a small animal in her sight (she is very much a huntress). Any other time she responds very quickly to a whistle or mouth click. While on a walk, a stranger asked to pet her and she let him do so without any fuss. In order to fill her water bowl, I leaned over her while she was eating and she wasn't bothered in the slightest. She is not fond of baths, but she does behave very well in the tub. RESPONSES TO OTHER DOGS:While on walks, she has been charged by other dogs from within fenced yards. In this situation, she has barked and tried to charge at the fence, but she is easily held by the leash and will quickly respond to me.When introduced to my neighbor's three boxers (through a chainlink fence), they barked at each other and then took to racing each other up and down the fence (this did not seem to be done aggressively). Since the initial fun, she has ignored the boxers, unless under the influence of post-bath zoomies.TRICKS:Emma knows three tricks (that I know of): sit, stay, and shake. TEMPERAMENT:Emma is incredibly loving and always wants to be around her people. If you're sitting on the couch, Emma will likely be cozied up against you. If you're sitting in a chair designed for single-occupancy, Emma will disregard the intentions of the furniture designer and crawl in your lap like the 70 pound dachshund she thinks she is. Beds are similarly shared. Emma also gives kisses very frequently."

Story
Honky Tonk was found wandering around town. A little crusty. Missing some hair. Generally looking a little ruff. We know nothing about his past. We don't know what kind of dog he is in a home. Here at the shelter he has mostly been very nervous. But is getting a little more confident. He is responding well to medical care. Mr. Crustybutt, aka Honky Tonk, is getting healthier, mind and body a little bit every day.

Story
Meet Storm! She came to us pregnant and with heartworms from a shelter in rural North Carolina. Since then, she's raised her puppies (who've all found homes), been spayed, and successfully treated for heartworms. Storm is a 3 years old, 48-pound American Bully who's incredibly sweet! She's currently in foster care with dogs of all sizes and is doing great. Storm also gets along well with kids, and we've introduced her to cats but she is a little to interested so NO cats. She's a bit cautious around men, preferring to stay away from them if she can (she finds comfort in her crate). If you're looking for a loving new family member, Storm is the perfect choice! Remember, adopting a dog means committing to them for life. If you're interested in adopting Storm, please don't call. Instead, fill out an online application on 4 Paws Animal Rescue's website at www.4pawz.org. We verify the care history of past and current pets to ensure the best homes for our animals. Story
Meet Hero! He was adopted but unfortunately returned. This special guy deserves another chance! Hero is a 3-year-old mix of American Pitbull and Beagle, weighing 39 lbs. He's the type of dog that gets along well with every other dog and truly thrives in their company. Hero also does well with cats and older, savvy children. He's a fan of running and has even participated in a 5k. Hero knows many commands and does best with regular training sessions. He's eager to please his humans and is already housebroken and, crate trained. Having been let down before, Hero will need some time to adjust to a new home and expectations. His new family must understand that Hero is a lifelong commitment, and they need to be dedicated to providing him with daily exercise, ongoing training, and socialization. Remember, adopting a dog means committing to them for life. If you're interested in adopting Hero, please don't call. Instead, complete an online application on 4 Paws Animal Rescue's website at www.4pawz.org. We carefully review the care history of past and current pets.
