Story
Sadly, nice guys really do finish last.Haverly's been at Animal Aid for nearly six months, and we're beginning to suspect the problem is that he's too polite for his own good. He’s 6, about 70 pounds, housetrained, wonderful on a leash, has excellent house manners, and has happily lived with young children and other dogs. Most people expect a shelter dog to conduct an adoption interview by throwing himself into their lap, licking their tonsils, and announcing, “YOU. I HAVE SELECTED YOU. WE LEAVE NOW.”Haverly has a different approach. He comes over, says hello, walks around and sniffs a little. He gives you some space. In dog language, this is an enormous compliment. Haverly is being calm, respectful, and polite.Unfortunately, humans are terrible at dog language. So people visit him, spend a few minutes together, and leave thinking, “I don’t think he likes me.”NO!!! He likes you. He's just trying very, very hard not to blow the interview. So, stay awhile. Give Haverly time to realize, Wait - You WANT me over there? And suddenly the professional demeanor collapses. Then he’s leaning against you, snuggling, and staring up at you like you are quite possibly the finest human ever manufactured.Haverly doesn’t give his heart away in the first five minutes, but once he understands that you want it, you get all of it.He has a reason for being careful. Years ago, we thought we’d found Haverly his forever family. They thought he was perfect, too. Then they moved.Instead of taking him with them - or returning him to Animal Aid, as promised - they left him with someone... who left him with someone else...Eventually, Haverly ended up alone in a regional shelter.Fortunately, thanks to his microchip, we got him back.So if you come to meet him, don’t mistake good manners for indifference. Give this very polite gentleman permission to fall in love with you. Please share Haverly’s story. Somewhere out there is the person or family he’s been waiting for - and after nearly six months, it’s time the nice guy finally finished first.Haverly is at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to noon daily, including weekends and holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
Hi there! I’m Jynx, a 3-year-old mix (maybe pit/boxer?) with soft fawn fur, adorable white socks, and a personality as lovable as my look. If you’re searching for a snuggle buddy and an outdoor adventurer wrapped into one, I might be your perfect match. I love lounging for cuddles as much as I enjoy zooming around the yard and playing tug with ropes and toys. Life hasn’t always been easy, but I adjusted quickly to my cozy new home after being rescued right before Christmas—and what a gift that was! Now, I’m thriving and soaking up all the love and fun that comes my way. I am working on dog relationships as there was a dog I did not get along with well in my previous foster home. For now, we will try to find me a home as the only dog until I can work on being comfortable around other dogs. I’m gentle and curious around cats. I would do fine to meet kids but will not be allowed to live with kids because I can be nervous and lack confidence at times. I’m house-trained, and leash-trained. I don’t like being crated but behave well when unmonitored outside of the crate. I’m also spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and ready to brighten your life with my goofy, loving energy. Since I can be a bit of a barker, I wouldn’t be suited for apartment living. I’m currently in Hampton Roads, VA, but I’d happily make the journey to find my forever home (transport fees apply). If you’re 21 or older and lo

Story
Hi there, I'm Vega, a 7-year-old, 70-pound, brindle and white boxer. I'm looking for a forever home with someone who can keep up with me and love me unconditionally. I'm an extremely loving, smart and adventurous boy, who enjoys playing, running, and exploring. I'm also very smart and eager to please, especially if you have some treats for me. I'm neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm negative, so I'm ready to go whenever you are. I have a ton of drive which makes me super fun to work with and my foster mom says I’d be amazing at dog sports of any kind because of how much I like to work. My foster mom can explain more but I need a firm owner who will work me and take me on adventures because I am no couch potato. I am dog selective needing slow intros to other dogs. I should not be around cats or other small animals because of my high prey drive. I do well with kids but best with older kids because of my size and energy. I can be crate reactive and have some barrier frustration, but I’ve been learning to improve my behavior here and am doing so much better. I also need more work on leash training, as I pull hard. Devices like gentle leaders may help me learn how to walk better on leash. I have a lot of love to give. I'm very passionate and loyal to anyone I bond with. I bond quickly and can’t wait to make friends with you! I love being petted and cuddled. I'm a relatively quiet pup, and I calm well when my exercise needs are met. I'm being fostered in Hampton Roads, VA but I can be transported out of state if you're the one for me. So, what do you say? Are you ready to meet your new best friend? I'm waiting for you. Fill out an application today and we will get the process started! *Must be 21 or older to apply.

Story
Fred is a wonderful dog who I adopted when I was fostering him. He’s very sweet, loves all other animals and kids. He’s a gentle giant. We just had a huge expense happen that I couldn’t have known when I adopted him so I need to find a new home unfortunately. He has to take some anxiety meds but could be weaned off with a vet and hip meds indefinitely. They are rather low cost through the vet or an online website like Dutch.

👑💦 XENA HAS BEEN WAITING LONG ENOUGH. LET’S GET THIS GIRL HOME! 🐾💛 Xena is a 3–4 year old, 45-pound brindle-and-white Boxer/Pittie mix—and she is one of our volunteer favorites. The problem? Somehow, this incredible girl keeps getting overlooked. 🥹 Xena LOVES people. Seriously, if you have a treat and are willing to give her a little affection, congratulations—you’re her new best friend. 😂💕 And this girl is READY FOR ADVENTURE: 🚗 Rides beautifully in the car — road trip buddy? Absolutely! 💦 Loves water — puddles, kiddie pools, river walks… she’s ALL IN! 🐾 Fantastic on leash — she happily matches her person's pace 🏃‍♀️ Slow stroll? Sure. Jog? Let’s GO! 🌱 Favorite activity: rolling around in the grass — pure happiness 💛 Friendly, affectionate & full of personality Xena can walk alongside other dogs just fine, but she’d really prefer to be the queen of her own castle and would do best as the only dog in the home. 👑 She has patiently watched other dogs come and go while waiting for someone to choose her. And we just can’t understand how she’s still waiting. Xena is ready to be someone's adventure buddy, road-trip copilot, puddle-plowing partner, and absolute best friend. 🥹💛 Could her forever be right around the corner? 📍 Come meet Xena at Hopewell Animal Services! 🐾

🤎🖤 CRYSTAL WANTS TO BE YOUR NUMBER ONE. 🐾✨ Crystal is a 3–4 year old, 55-pound caramel Boxer/Pittie mix with a stunning black muzzle—and eyes that will absolutely melt you. 🥹 Crystal isn’t the kind of girl who immediately rolls over and says, “Belly rubs, please!” 😂 She likes to take a little time to decide you’re her person. But put in the effort to earn her trust? You’ll be rewarded. Big time. ❤️ Once Crystal connects with you, she is ALL about her person. On walks, she’s constantly checking in, making eye contact with those gorgeous eyes—and sometimes even batting them at you like she’s flirting. 👀💕 You can practically hear her saying, “I’m so glad I’m with you.” ✨ Focused & responsive to her person 🧠 Smart and VERY treat motivated 👀 Loves checking in and making eye contact 💕 Enjoys pets & brushing 🛁 Surprisingly enjoys bath time! 🐾 Sweet, affectionate & eager to please 😏 Has a little sass and silliness when she gets fired up—but responds well to guidance And Crystal has a sit-and-stare-for-the-treat routine that is pretty spectacular. She’ll patiently watch your every move, waiting for direction… while possibly calculating exactly how many treats she can convince you to hand over. 😂 Crystal would do best in an adult-only home or a home with older children where her people understand that trust is something you build—and once you have hers, it’s pretty special. She may make you work a little harder for her heart. But once she decides you're her person? You’ll know it. And so will she. 🤎🐾 Come meet Crystal at Hopewell Animal Services!

Story
Auntie Em is a beautiful, German Shepherd Dog/Pitbull mix (50/50 according to the DNA test). Her dark Brindle coat and copper eyes are simply stunning - this girl turns heads! She is about 3.5 years old and weighs 64 pounds. She is very smart, obedient, powerful, and full of energy. If you are interested, please research both breeds. High energy, working dogs require a lot of exercise and stimuli. Auntie Em is very particular with other animals. She has interacted with various sized dogs. Sometimes it's playful, sometimes it's not. She does not like when other dogs get in her face or show any excitement or dominance. There is not a lot of warning when she's upset. A new owner will have to work with her and learn her cues and how to redirect her. Her prey drive is there for little furry things too, therefore no kitties. Em would do best as the only pet. She has loved all the people she has met so far with proper introduction. She is CRAZY food motivated. Em will eat anything, but chicken seems to make her itchy. Poultry free diet for this girl! She is gentle when taking treats, but is a bit protective of her bowl and yummy treats. Because of this and her occasional bursts of energy (zoomies), no children under 12 in the household for this gal. Em will definitely benefit from some obedience training to polish her manners. She does know some basic commands. She will go in a crate, but she does not love it. Em can be trusted in the house alone as long as she has her toys. She LOVES her toys. She also loves to hang out on the couch and on the bed if you will let her. Em will go in the car just fine - she is a little anxious at first, but settles down. She is micro-chipped, UTD on vaccines and spayed. She does get seasonal allergies too, but it is easily controlled with medication as needed. Em is going to make a wonderful pet for the right owner. Is it you? If you are interested, please fill out an application on www.homesfurhounds.org.
