Story
I got Ro-Nan for emotional support as a single-bachelor after my mom passed from Cancer. His name is a combination of my favorite book in the Bible, Romans, and my mom's name, Nan. Pronounced Ro-nin, he answers to that, and Roro. I just had a baby daughter and adopted an 8 and 6 year old, and Ro has not adjusted well to the change. He will make an excellent addition to any home that has older children and attentive and loving caregivers. He is high energy and extremely loyal and intelligent. Ro is crate and house trained. He has been spending more time in the crate since the baby was born, so increasing time at home in hour outside the crate in hour increments would help him remember his home-alone skills more smoothly.

Story
Nothing can get Haverly down. His whole body wags, his kisses are enthusiastic and thorough, and he greets every person like they might be his favorite. It’s a beautiful thing, but it also makes you wonder how he stayed this way.In 2022, Haverly was rescued by Chris Haverly, who saved and transported thousands of unwanted dogs and cats to safety in Southwest Virginia. Chris passed away in January, but his impact lives on in dogs like Haverly - dogs who wake up every day ready to love. After his rescue, Haverly was adopted and became a wonderful family dog - gentle with kids, great with other dogs, and with excellent house manners. Somewhere along the way, though, that life unraveled. Recently, he was picked up as a stray, wandering with no one looking for him.Now he’s back with us, still the same big, affectionate, happy dog, just with a new challenge. Two suspicious lumps on his leg turned out to be mast cell tumors. So, Haverly had surgery. And through all of it -- being lost, being found, the diagnosis, the recovery -- he has stayed exactly the same: soft, joyful, unshaken. Now healthy and lump-free, Haverly is ready to go home again. He was rescued by an angel. He survived abandonment and cancer for a reason.Maybe that reason is you?Come be inspired (and enthusiastically kissed) by Haverly at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, daily, including weekends and holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
Mandy is in a FOSTER home while she waits for her FOREVER home. Please email PRAS-FOSTER@NNVA.GOV if you`d like to meet her!Hi, I’m Mandy, a spayed Boxer mix with a big heart and so much love to give! I spend my days dreaming of long walks, fresh air, and finding my perfect forever home. I’m a friendly and outgoing girl once I get to know you. I can be a little shy at first, but with a little time and patience, I warm up and form a strong bond with my people. Once I feel comfortable, I’m incredibly loyal and love being close to those I trust.I’m not much of a toy enthusiast, but I really enjoy being outside—especially relaxing in the shade with a good stick. It’s my kind of perfect day.I’ve been living in a foster home with children and have done well with them, as long as everyone takes things at my pace. I do best with slow, positive introductions to new people so I can feel safe and comfortable.I’m looking for a home that will give me a little time to settle in and show my true self. In return, I’ll be a deeply devoted companion who will love you like no other. If you’d like to meet me, please email PRAS-FOSTER@NNVA.GOV.

Story
Hi there! I’m Jynx, a 3-year-old mix (maybe pit/boxer?) with soft fawn fur, adorable white socks, and a personality as lovable as my look. If you’re searching for a snuggle buddy and an outdoor adventurer wrapped into one, I might be your perfect match. I love lounging for cuddles as much as I enjoy zooming around the yard and playing tug with ropes and toys. Life hasn’t always been easy, but I adjusted quickly to my cozy new home after being rescued right before Christmas—and what a gift that was! Now, I’m thriving and soaking up all the love and fun that comes my way. I am working on dog relationships as there was a dog I did not get along with well in my previous foster home. For now, we will try to find me a home as the only dog until I can work on being comfortable around other dogs. I’m gentle and curious around cats. I would do fine to meet kids but will not be allowed to live with kids because I can be nervous and lack confidence at times. I’m house-trained, and leash-trained. I don’t like being crated but behave well when unmonitored outside of the crate. I’m also spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and ready to brighten your life with my goofy, loving energy. Since I can be a bit of a barker, I wouldn’t be suited for apartment living. I’m currently in Hampton Roads, VA, but I’d happily make the journey to find my forever home (transport fees apply). If you’re 21 or older and lo

Story
Hi there, I'm Vega, a 7-year-old, 70-pound, brindle and white boxer. I'm looking for a forever home with someone who can keep up with me and love me unconditionally. I'm an extremely loving, smart and adventurous boy, who enjoys playing, running, and exploring. I'm also very smart and eager to please, especially if you have some treats for me. I'm neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm negative, so I'm ready to go whenever you are. I have a ton of drive which makes me super fun to work with and my foster mom says I’d be amazing at dog sports of any kind because of how much I like to work. My foster mom can explain more but I need a firm owner who will work me and take me on adventures because I am no couch potato. I am dog selective needing slow intros to other dogs. I should not be around cats or other small animals because of my high prey drive. I do well with kids but best with older kids because of my size and energy. I can be crate reactive and have some barrier frustration, but I’ve been learning to improve my behavior here and am doing so much better. I also need more work on leash training, as I pull hard. Devices like gentle leaders may help me learn how to walk better on leash. I have a lot of love to give. I'm very passionate and loyal to anyone I bond with. I bond quickly and can’t wait to make friends with you! I love being petted and cuddled. I'm a relatively quiet pup, and I calm well when my exercise needs are met. I'm being fostered in Hampton Roads, VA but I can be transported out of state if you're the one for me. So, what do you say? Are you ready to meet your new best friend? I'm waiting for you. Fill out an application today and we will get the process started! *Must be 21 or older to apply.

🛡️✨ Warrior Princess XENA is ready for her next chapter ✨🛡️ At 3–4 years old and 45 pounds, Xena is a stunning brindle-and-white beauty with a story of resilience—and a heart that’s ready to love 💛 When she first arrived at Hopewell Animal Services, it was clear life hadn’t always been kind to her. Underweight at just 34 pounds, she needed time, care, and a whole lot of love. And look at her now… healthier, more confident, and truly starting to shine 🌟 Xena can be a little shy in busy or social situations, but give her some quiet one-on-one time and you’ll see her for who she really is—an incredibly affectionate, calm, and loyal companion. 🐾 Walks beautifully on leash 🐾 Loves exploring (bonus points if there’s water involved 💦) 🐾 Big fan of rolling in the grass and soaking up the simple joys 🐾 Enjoys walking with other dogs, but would be just as happy as your one-and-only She’s been through more than most dogs her age, and she deserves a home where she can finally relax, feel safe, and be completely spoiled like the queen she is 👑 If you’re looking for a gentle, loving companion and you believe in giving second chances, Xena just might be your girl. 📍 Come meet Xena at Hopewell Animal Services 🕒 Open Tuesday–Saturday, 10 AM – 2 PM Her past doesn’t define her—but her future could include you 💫

Story
Meet Frida - our chunky bulldog queen with a big personality and an independent streak! Frida may play it cool when meeting new people, but don’t let her aloof first impression fool you - give this independent lady a little time, and she warms up beautifully. She enjoys doing her own thing, exploring at her own pace, and soaking up attention in a home where she can be the star of the show. Frida would prefer to be your one and only pup, and she’s a perfect match for someone who appreciates a laid-back, self-sufficient companion. Soft, chewy treats are definitely a plus… just not too many for this delightfully chunky girl. Animal Aces Kid Spotlight! Our Animal Aces Kids Club members became junior reporters and interviewed our animal care team to help some of our adoptable animals shine! These spotlights are kid-created with big hearts, curious minds, and plenty of personality.Written by Piper and Roxie, Animal Aces Kids Club members:`Hello, my name is Frida and I`m a white gray bulldog mix. I`m very calm and enjoy soft chewy treats. I came in as a stray so I might be shy, but I`ll work on it. I love spending time with males. I`m very chunky so don`t give me too many treats. I enjoy doing my own thing and I love to explore at my own pace. I`m a great match for a home. I was found on the street and was really scared. I am five years old and I want to be adopted. I need extra time to get to know you.`

Story
Auntie Em is a beautiful, German Shepherd Dog/Pitbull mix (50/50 according to the DNA test). Her dark Brindle coat and copper eyes are simply stunning - this girl turns heads! She is about 3.5 years old and weighs 64 pounds. She is very smart, obedient, powerful, and full of energy. If you are interested, please research both breeds. High energy, working dogs require a lot of exercise and stimuli. Auntie Em is very particular with other animals. She has interacted with various sized dogs. Sometimes it's playful, sometimes it's not. She does not like when other dogs get in her face or show any excitement or dominance. There is not a lot of warning when she's upset. A new owner will have to work with her and learn her cues and how to redirect her. Her prey drive is there for little furry things too, therefore no kitties. Em would do best as the only pet. She has loved all the people she has met so far with proper introduction. She is CRAZY food motivated. Em will eat anything, but chicken seems to make her itchy. Poultry free diet for this girl! She is gentle when taking treats, but is a bit protective of her bowl and yummy treats. Because of this and her occasional bursts of energy (zoomies), no children under 12 in the household for this gal. Em will definitely benefit from some obedience training to polish her manners. She does know some basic commands. She will go in a crate, but she does not love it. Em can be trusted in the house alone as long as she has her toys. She LOVES her toys. She also loves to hang out on the couch and on the bed if you will let her. Em will go in the car just fine - she is a little anxious at first, but settles down. She is micro-chipped, UTD on vaccines and spayed. She does get seasonal allergies too, but it is easily controlled with medication as needed. Em is going to make a wonderful pet for the right owner. Is it you? If you are interested, please fill out an application on www.homesfurhounds.org.
