Story
Lady Izzy is a beautiful 45–50 lb Irish Setter/Poodle mix 18-24 months old, who is looking for her forever family! 🐾💜 This lovely lady has so many wonderful qualities and is ready to bring lots of love and happiness into a lucky home. 🐶 Great with other dogs 👧 Great with kids 🚗 Rides great in the car 🏡 House trained 🦮 Good on leash with a harness. 💉 Up to date on vaccinations & spayed. Amazingly sweet, with tremendous ability to bond deeply. Loves attention. Truly just wants to be loved and will be absolutely devoted to her person/people. Wonderful temperament and eye contact. Loves to give kisses. Has been good with meeting a multitude of adults and kids down to toddlers and babies. The kid interactions have been while she was on leash. Friendly with most everyone. Given her neglected past, she is actually surprisingly confident. Slightly reserved with some adult males, but not significantly. She has been friendly with almost all the dogs she has encountered. She is very smart, and incredibly sensitive. Very eager to please. Does not like raised voices. Extremely food motivated and will be easy to train with positive reinforcement. She does have some loud noise sensitivities. Hearing some distant fireworks sounds while out on walks visibly scared her. Will probably need extra care around times of peak noisy events like 4th of July season. Some prey drive exhibited with chasing squirrels; has not been tested on cats. Barked at and was very interested in chasing ducks she encountered at the park. She would do best in a home where her human(s) were home most of the time. She craves being near her human(s. Will require regular grooming and brushing to avoid matting. Does have some barking reactivity with doorbells and visitors at the door and with small critters on the fence and people walking behind the fence, or neighbors out in their yards that she can hear but not see. Extremely athletic and skilled jumper - would definitely need tall secured fence. She had not shown any desire to dig (her current yard has rock or pavers all along bottom fence lines), but she did start digging a small spot today in the middle of the yard - was easy to stop and redirect as I was present. Not shown any interest in chewing plants - inside or out. She has not been left outside unsupervised for more than a few minutes. Due to her separation anxiety, she might try and escape if left outside alone for long periods. I think she would thrive in an active home, would make a great running or walking/hiking partner, maybe agility training or scent training to keep her mind and body engaged and active. She does enjoy being outside when I am out there with her and content to lay in the lawn or patio and snooze while I am watering or working in the garden. Has been living with a male labradoodle in her foster home and has been good with him and other dogs. I would not describe her as a strong “alpha”, and is not aggressive (although has shown mild “warning growl” resource food guarding when chewing a bully stick and her foster brother was wanting to check it out), but she is very pushy when excited and exhuberant and can overwhelm and intimidate her laid back foster brother even though he is similar size. As she has settled in and they have attempted to engage in some romping and play in the yard, her play style is a little more roughhouse than he likes, but because he is so “beta” laid back submissive, he won’t correct her, he just backs off and moves away. She is just not always aware of her size, strength, roughness and movements and has run into him and bodychecked him pretty hard both in play or just because he’s in her path, which contributes to making him leery of playing with her. She is used to having another dog around and seems to enjoy it although she primary bonding focus is with her human. She does watch and learn from him which helps training. I think she might be best in a home with another dog - big or small - who can check and correct her as necessary to help her keep learning good manners and appropriate interactions. *IN THE HOUSE - Izzy does wonderfully in the house. She has not chewed on anything inappropriate and is reliably potty trained. She easily goes 10-11 hrs overnight. She will counter surf when left alone if there is anything within reach (and she has really long legs). She has been allowed to be up on covered furniture and sleeps on the bed and I think she would love this in her furever home. She was excellent at staying on the dog bed by the bed during the night when recovering from her spay surgery and restricted from jumping, but loves being up on the bed now. She thinks she is a big lap dog, a true snuggler and velcro dog. She follows me around everywhere. She does have some understandable separation anxiety when I have to be gone. It has gotten better. She has not been left (with my other pup) for longer than 3 hours. I’m not sure what, if any, her past experience is with crating so not sure if it would increase her anxiety or help. As long as there is no food within reach, she has been fine to be left loose in the house with her foster brother when I have to be gone. Leave her a tummy friendly stuffed frozen kong, as the licking is comforting and occupies her. She is slowly discovering toys, but still pretty clueless about what to do with them. She and her foster brother will trade squeaky balls back and forth when one gets laid down by the other (the grass is always greener), but she doesn’t resource guard the toys. She has been fairly reluctant to go outside on her own, even with her foster brother. I usually have to go out at least on the patio with her and give command to “go potty” if we are out there for her to do her business. I suspect in her neglected past that she might have frequently been left outside and ignored for extended periods and is nervous about a repeat *Energy level - she is a bouncy, exuberant, moderate to high energy dog when she gets going. The word “Rambunctious” comes to mind. Not aggressive, just pushy, wiggly and could trip or knock someone over unintentionally. Her tail is constantly wagging and is pretty lethal! I don’t think she would be a great fit in a home with small children or timid smaller dogs as she could overwhelm them or accidentally tromple them. On the flip side, she will settle and nap with best of them, and snuggle up on the couch any time I am there. but as soon as I move off the couch or out of a chair, she springs up and is ready to go. We are working on not jumping up on people and have made pretty good progress. As mentioned she is quite bouncy. she is occasionally a little mouthy when excited, but this is getting better as well. She does well on leash with her harness. Most days, our evening walk is over to a nearby grade school that has large fenced field with a walking path. There are several regulars in our “pack walk” that walk each night year around and she has done great off leash. She recalls nicely, but checks back in with me on her own frequently and will often walk close by off leash on her own. She has done well with the assortment of dogs present, but especially loves running hard with 3 large male golden retrievers when they are chasing down their chuck it balls, much to their consternation. She is very fast and strong and holds her own with them, although their focus is on their ball. She has been “corrected” a few times by them when she gets in their way or bumps into them which is good as she as she can be oblivious otherwise to her pushiness with non-dominate dogs who won’t correct her. Food - she was significantly underweight coming into foster care and moderately starved. Requires a slow feeder bowl which may be necessary for some time (if not permanently) to keep her from eating too quickly (which can cause diarrhea and/or vomiting). She does have to be fed separately or she will try and eat the other dog’s food also. she will eat any food that is accessible to her. She will need a stable food schedule to help her over the food insecurity. Appears to have some intolerance to chicken based food. Lady Izzy is a wonderful girl who would love to find a family to call her very own. If you think she might be the perfect addition to your home, we'd love to hear from you! 📧 Request an application: journeyhomerescue@outlook.com Located in Southern Idaho 🚐 Journey Home Rescue provides transportation throughout the Pacific Northwest to approved home.
