Shelter FAQs

The Gateway Area Humane Society was established in 1982 with a deep commitment to protecting and improving the lives of animals in our community. In the early years, we operated without a physical facility, focusing our efforts on neglect and cruelty investigations, follow-ups, and rescuing animals from county shelters and directly from the public. Even then, our goal was clear: to provide care, compassion, and second chances to animals in need. Over the years, we've grown into a full-service organization with a shelter and spay/neuter clinic, allowing us to expand our impact. We house both dogs and cats with the hope of helping them find their forever homes. We occasionally partner with out-of-state rescues to further our mission. At the heart of everything we do is the belief that the only long-term solution to pet overpopulation is to promote spaying and neutering in every way possible. Through community education, accessible services, and dedicated rescue work, we remain committed to creating a safer, more compassionate world for animals—one pet at a time.
