My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Zalekah / Female / 2 yr / 18 lbs (8 kg) / Mixed breed / Rescued from Barbados / Fostered in Toronto

House and crate trained / Good with savvy, patient pets and children

Little Zalekah has big dreams of finding her forever lap-human

Sweet and gentle, Zalekah is the world’s cutest lap dog. She has refined taste in people, treats, and toys — choosing quality over quantity. And when she chooses her people, she’s all heart. Her favourite activity is curling up like a baby on her human’s lap, head resting in their arms, sleepily gazing into their eyes until she drifts off. When she’s not napping, she enjoys short walks and the occasional burst of playful energy.

Smart and eager to please, Zalekah has mastered basic commands and recall. She is a dream on the leash, especially appreciated on slippery winter sidewalks. She can be fearful of loud noises and unfamiliar people, preferring quiet areas. When meeting new people, she likes to observe from a safe distance and approach on her own terms. With dogs, she’s mostly indifferent — polite and low-key. Zalekah is house trained but thrives on routine, being a small girl with a tiny bladder. She’s also been working hard on her separation anxiety and now settles after a few minutes with reassurance and consistency.

Zalekah would do best in a quiet home or neighbourhood with experienced, patient adopters who can continue building her confidence and helping her feel safe. Calm, respectful children and gentle pet siblings could be a great fit, though she would also be perfectly happy soaking up all the love on her own.

If you’re looking for a soft-hearted, devoted lap dog who will choose you as her safe place, Zalekah may be your perfect match. Apply to adopt her at www.caninehaven.org/dog-application

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

To adopt one of our dogs, please fill out an application here (https://caninehaven.org/dog-application/).

Although we do our best to reply to all inquiries within 48 hours, please remember we are a 100% volunteer based organization, and many of us have full time jobs outside of rescue. We appreciate your patience.

Our priority is to ensure the fit is right for both you and the dog, we will reach out to your personal and veterinarian references (if applicable), and your landlord (if applicable). A virtual video or pictures of your place are required at the time of application.

You will then be granted a private meet and greet with the dog. If after the meet and greet, you would like to proceed with adoption, we will review your application internally and with the foster and make a final decision.

More about this rescue

Formed in 2013, a small scale dog rescue located in Ontario. We are a non-profit, volunteer-run, foster home based.

None of our dogs are boarded in kennels upon arrival.

We are dedicated in rescuing dogs from the Caribbean, Mexico and North America as well as local surrenders.

We place dogs in loving, responsible and committed permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process.

Animals in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment and placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in their permanent homes.

We assist dogs in distress without regard to age, breed or ease of placement
