MEET TURKEY! Turkey was found wandering alone, covered in ticks, with no one coming to look for him. He was underweight, anemic, and so shut down when he arrived at the vet that the world probably felt very small and very scary. But Turkey? Turkey never stopped trusting us. He didn't fight. He didn't bark or shut us out. He simply let us help him — quietly, gently, with the kind of patience that makes you wonder what he's been through and how he still has so much grace left to give. When we picked him up from the vet to head to his foster home, his tail was wagging. He rode calmly in the car, not a peep of protest — just a beagle boy ready to finally feel safe. And the moment he walked through the door of his foster home, he exhaled. Turkey is currently working through heartworm treatment and being treated for Lyme disease. He's still bony and building back his strength, but every day he's filling out a little more — in body and in spirit. Once he's fully healed, Turkey is going to make someone an extraordinary companion. We believe he'll be a true velcro dog — devoted, gentle, and deeply bonded to his people. He's already shown us who he is: a dog who chooses trust even when the world hasn't earned it yet. Turkey is not yet available for adoption while he completes treatment, but we'd love to hear from the right family. If you think you might be his person, reach out to us at info@dogsdeservebetter.org. Some dogs find you right when you need them. We think Turkey is that dog for someone. 🧡

MEET PENELOPE! Summer is here, and so is this girl's GLOW UP! We are so incredibly proud of how far Penelope has come — she is ready for her forever home, and we are on a mission to find her one before she hits her one-year mark with us on June 17th! Penelope came to us from a tough situation, but you would absolutely never know it looking at her now. She is thriving in her foster home, soaking up all the love and comfort she deserves like the queen she is. Her foster has been capturing all her best moments in compilation videos, and honestly — you need to see them. This girl is something else. Penelope — affectionately known as Peepee — is a sweet, sassy, and totally loveable girl who has blossomed so much since coming into our care. She has fully embraced cozy indoor life (pillow forts and snuggles, yes please!), and her confidence just keeps growing every single day. She has warmed up beautifully and loves being around her people and her foster sister. Her leash skills have come SO far and are honestly impressive, but she's equally happy soaking up a sunny spot in the yard or assisting with gardening activities. She gets along wonderfully with dogs of all sizes and would love a home with a canine bestie and a fenced-in yard to share. Patient, gentle, and completely heart-stealing — with those Dobby ears and panda eyes, Penelope has a way of making you fall in love without even trying. If you're interested, submit an application! This girl is ready to be someone's perfect dog. 🩷

Meet Joey 💛 Joey didn’t grow up knowing the comforts of home. Left to survive on his own for years, he learned to be cautious — and for good reason. But Joey is proving that even after a hard start, growth is possible. In the last few months, we’ve watched him begin to open up. He’s curiously interested in people now, choosing to come closer, allowing gentle pets, and showing us that he wants to connect — he just needs a little time. Joey is around 35–40 lbs and estimated to be 6–8 years old. He finds confidence in other dogs and would do best with a calm, steady canine companion to help show him the ropes. Recently, Joey began an in-home board and train program where he’s gaining real experience living inside a home — learning routines, building trust, and discovering what it means to relax in a safe environment. We are so excited for this next chapter for him. But here’s what Joey will need next: When his training is complete, he will need a foster home to continue that progress. We do not want him returning to traditional boarding after he’s worked so hard to adjust to home life. Joey needs a patient, understanding foster willing to give him time, space, and consistency. A secure fenced yard would be ideal, and a confident resident dog would be a huge bonus. This sweet boy has already come so far. Now he just needs someone willing to help him keep going. Could you be the soft landing Joey is waiting for? 💛

Story
Belinda This little girl has been waiting long enough! Life didn’t start out kind for Belinda. Before she ever knew a gentle hand or a warm voice, she knew hunger, neglect and the loneliness of being over looked. Rescued from a hoarding situation, she arrived having never really experienced what it means to be loved- or noticed. But here’s the thing about Belinda: she showed up anyway. Quiet, watchful, and full of a cautious curiosity that hints at something wonderful waiting underneath the surface. She’s the kind of dog who won’t demand your attention- she’ll simply appear beside you, close enough to feel safe, watching you with those soft eyes as she slowly figures out that the world isn’t always as cold as the one she came from. She’s learning. Every single day, she’s learning. Other dogs? She’ll get there. New environments? Give her time. Trust? She’s already starting to find it. What Belinda needs right now is a quiet, patient foster who understands that healing isn’t linear. Who understands that progress looks different every day , and that sometimes the greatest gift you can give an animal is simply the freedom to feel safe without any pressure to perform. If you’ve loved a shy dog before- you understand the magic of earning that kind of trust- then you already know why Belinda is worth it. 4/21/26

Meet Millie 🤍 Millie came to us after our field team found her sick and chained outside — but if you met her today, you'd never guess how hard her start was. She is pure sweetness, the kind of dog who just wants to be close to you and soak up every bit of love she can get. And honestly? She's earned it. She's currently working through heartworm treatment, taking things slow and resting up — but she's handling it like a champ. In the meantime, she's been discovering what it feels like to be truly cared for: cool air, soft beds, a full belly, and a family who adores her. Safe to say she's settling in just fine. When she's ready, Millie will be looking for a home where she can keep right on being loved. She does great with kids and other dogs, and we think she'll thrive anywhere she's given the chance to just be a dog — cherished, comfortable, and finally at peace. She didn't have someone in her corner before. Now she does — and we're not stopping until she has a forever home to match. We urge you to apply to adopt Millie if a sweet hound sounds like the perfect addition to your family🐾

Story
Spanky and Darla, an adorable bonded pair of 4-year-old Basset Hound mixes whose names fit them almost as perfectly as the famous Little Rascals. Just like their namesakes, these two are happiest when they`re together, and they are looking for a forever home where they can continue life`s adventures side by side. While Spanky is the confident charmer and Darla is the shy sweetheart, together they make the perfect team. They must be adopted together because their bond is truly something special.Spanky is the outgoing half of this duo and wins hearts everywhere he goes. This handsome, playful boy loves people, enjoys romping and wrestling with his canine friends (especially Darla!), and is always ready for a cuddle or to happily follow his favorite person around the house. Darla, on the other hand, is still learning that the world isn`t such a scary place. She absolutely blossoms around other dogs, especially Spanky, and when she`s running joyful zoomies through the yard with her pack, you can finally see the carefree little Darla hiding beneath her timid exterior. These two will thrive in a patient, understanding home with a securely fenced yard. Because Darla is still very fearful of new experiences, a quieter home without children will help her continue building confidence at her own pace. Watching her take treats from a hand, settle into a routine, and slowly learn to trust has already been incredibly rewarding, and with Spanky by her side cheering her on, we know her best chapters are still to come. If you`ve been searching for a pair that proves love, loyalty, and friendship really can conquer fear, Spanky and Darla are ready to write the next Little Rascals adventure—with you as part of the cast. More photos coming soon!!! Contact BROOD today to meet Spanky and Darla! Their total adoption fee for the bonded pair is $375.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. We adopt to residents of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, DC, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania. Do not apply to adopt from BROOD if you live in another state. We require a virtual home visit and a veterinary reference. Story
Chorizo is a super senior Basset mix estimated to be over 10 years old, with a heart as big as his adorable personality. This little 25-pound gentleman is a professional snuggler who loves nothing more than curling up in a soft orthopedic bed or being lifted into bed for a night of peaceful cuddling. Despite his age, Chorizo still has plenty of pep and absolutely loves going for walks, happily ambling about half a mile before climbing into his stroller to continue his adventure. He is friendly with everyone he meets, from new people to dogs and even little humans, and he has never met a stranger.Chorizo is a wonderfully well-mannered companion who has quickly settled into his foster home and seems to appreciate all the comforts of retirement. He gets along beautifully with other dogs and is particularly comfortable having a calm canine friend around, especially when his people leave the house. Chorizo is deaf and has limited vision, but his magnificent Basset snooter more than makes up for it—if he can`t immediately see his foster family, he`ll simply follow his nose until he finds them. He is house-trained, walks beautifully on a leash, rides well in the car, and is even learning ASL, although he already knows the most important sign of all: `cookie!`Chorizo is looking for a quiet, loving home where he can enjoy his golden years at a comfortable pace. Arthritis, cataracts, and his age mean he needs supportive bedding, limited exercise, and a person who can help lift his 25-pound body into the car or bath when necessary. He would do best with a calm canine companion who won`t roughhouse with him, and while he adores children, they should be gentle and supervised because this sweet old boy is a little delicate. Also, a generous BROOD supporter will provide a $100 gift to Chorizo`s adopter. If you have room in your heart for a ridiculously cute, lap-sized senior who wants nothing more than soft beds, leisurely adventures, good food, and someone to love, Chorizo is ready to be your very special little shadow. Contact BROOD today to meet Chorizo! His adoption fee is $150.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions).
