Story
MEET TURKEY! Turkey was found wandering alone, covered in ticks, with no one coming to look for him. He was underweight, anemic, and so shut down when he arrived at the vet that the world probably felt very small and very scary. But Turkey? Turkey never stopped trusting us. He didn't fight. He didn't bark or shut us out. He simply let us help him — quietly, gently, with the kind of patience that makes you wonder what he's been through and how he still has so much grace left to give. When we picked him up from the vet to head to his foster home, his tail was wagging. He rode calmly in the car, not a peep of protest — just a beagle boy ready to finally feel safe. And the moment he walked through the door of his foster home, he exhaled. Turkey is currently working through heartworm treatment and being treated for Lyme disease. He's still bony and building back his strength, but every day he's filling out a little more — in body and in spirit. Once he's fully healed, Turkey is going to make someone an extraordinary companion. We believe he'll be a true velcro dog — devoted, gentle, and deeply bonded to his people. He's already shown us who he is: a dog who chooses trust even when the world hasn't earned it yet. Turkey is not yet available for adoption while he completes treatment, but we'd love to hear from the right family. If you think you might be his person, reach out to us at info@dogsdeservebetter.org. Some dogs find you right when you need them. We think Turkey is that dog for someone. 🧡

Story
Penelope—affectionately known as Peepee—is a sweet but sassy little girl who has come a long way from her feral beginnings. She’s discovered the comforts of indoor life and has fully embraced them, especially when it comes to blankets. Penelope loves to curl up on the couch and will happily spend hours snuggled nearby. While she’s still learning to trust human touch, Penelope does best with patience and compassion. She prefers to lie close to her person rather than be petted, and she’ll let you know when she’s feeling overwhelmed. Her confidence continues to grow at her own pace, and with time, her comfort around people keeps improving. Penelope has a playful side too—she loves squeaky toys, though she’s a bit bashful about it. Don’t be surprised if you only hear her playing once you’ve left the room. She will make her opinions known, however. If her water bowl is empty, dinner is late, or another dog is misbehaving, her adorable grumbly barks will quickly get your attention. She’s making great progress learning to walk on a leash, but she’s just as happy sunbathing or quietly observing the world from a distance. Penelope will need continued support to become comfortable with grooming and vet visits. She has a lovely, gentle temperament and gets along well with dogs of all sizes and sexes—she currently lives with a pack of five Cane Corsos. Though shy around strangers, she does not bark or bite to communicate. And with her signature Dobby ears and panda eyes, Penelope has a way of stealing hearts without even trying. Penelope is looking for a calm, understanding home that will allow her to continue blossoming at her own pace. 💛

Story
Meet Joey 💛 Joey didn’t grow up knowing the comforts of home. Left to survive on his own for years, he learned to be cautious — and for good reason. But Joey is proving that even after a hard start, growth is possible. In the last few months, we’ve watched him begin to open up. He’s curiously interested in people now, choosing to come closer, allowing gentle pets, and showing us that he wants to connect — he just needs a little time. Joey is around 35–40 lbs and estimated to be 6–8 years old. He finds confidence in other dogs and would do best with a calm, steady canine companion to help show him the ropes. Recently, Joey began an in-home board and train program where he’s gaining real experience living inside a home — learning routines, building trust, and discovering what it means to relax in a safe environment. We are so excited for this next chapter for him. But here’s what Joey will need next: When his training is complete, he will need a foster home to continue that progress. We do not want him returning to traditional boarding after he’s worked so hard to adjust to home life. Joey needs a patient, understanding foster willing to give him time, space, and consistency. A secure fenced yard would be ideal, and a confident resident dog would be a huge bonus. This sweet boy has already come so far. Now he just needs someone willing to help him keep going. Could you be the soft landing Joey is waiting for? 💛

Belinda This little girl has been waiting long enough! Life didn’t start out kind for Belinda. Before she ever knew a gentle hand or a warm voice, she knew hunger, neglect and the loneliness of being over looked. Rescued from a hoarding situation, she arrived having never really experienced what it means to be loved- or noticed. But here’s the thing about Belinda: she showed up anyway. Quiet, watchful, and full of a cautious curiosity that hints at something wonderful waiting underneath the surface. She’s the kind of dog who won’t demand your attention- she’ll simply appear beside you, close enough to feel safe, watching you with those soft eyes as she slowly figures out that the world isn’t always as cold as the one she came from. She’s learning. Every single day, she’s learning. Other dogs? She’ll get there. New environments? Give her time. Trust? She’s already starting to find it. What Belinda needs right now is a quiet, patient foster who understands that healing isn’t linear. Who understands that progress looks different every day , and that sometimes the greatest gift you can give an animal is simply the freedom to feel safe without any pressure to perform. If you’ve loved a shy dog before- you understand the magic of earning that kind of trust- then you already know why Belinda is worth it. 4/21/26

Moped is a sweet, Happy go lucky Beagle/Dachshund mix guy who is bursting with personality! He’s a certified lap dog who loves being close to his people- but don’t be surprised if he suddenly gets the zoomies while playing. He’s currently thriving in his foster home with another dog and takes his cues from his canine companions, making him a great fit for a home with another easygoing pup. Moped is crate trained, good with other dogs, and a total snuggle bug. He is a little self concious about a small benign tumor on his head, but he wants to assure you that it is completely harmless and just adds to his unique charm!

Story
Jerrold, legal name unknown, is an absolute character straight out of a Southern Gothic novel. He oozes main character energy and has more tales to tell than there are ears in this world to hear them. This adorable beagle's small stature contains more personality than a dog thrice his size. Jerrold delights in bemoaning the sad state of his food bowl right after he finishes breakfast, and is quick to tell passersby how low he is despite the long sniffy walk and thorough scritch-scratch he just received. As a natural dramatist, Jerrold doesn't mind the company of other dogs, but he does prefer an audience of the two-legged variety. If you want to be endlessly entertained, Jerrold is the only dog for you. Apply to adopt Jerrold today!

Story
Dolly is a sweet and goofy two-year-old Basset mix who loves everyone she meets, whether they have two legs or four. She is playful, affectionate, and happiest when she’s included in family life and surrounded by people or animal friends. Dolly enjoys toys, treats, kisses, and car rides, and she is always ready for her next little adventure. At the end of the day, though, her favorite place is snuggled up close to her person, usually buried underneath a big pile of pillows for bedtime. This friendly girl does wonderfully with children, other dogs, and even cats. She has a moderate activity level and enjoys spending time running around the yard, playing throughout the day, and going on occasional walks. Dolly is crate trained, rides nicely in the car, and is generally a quiet dog except for the occasional bark during playtime. She can be a little enthusiastic with jumping and licking when excited, so very small toddlers may need a little supervision during greetings.Dolly is partially housetrained and continues to make progress with consistency and routine. She walks on a leash but is still working on her manners and can pull when excited to explore. She would fit well in many different types of homes, including apartments, as long as she gets plenty of love, playtime, and attention. With her loving personality, silly habits, and endless affection, Dolly is sure to make her future family smile every single day. Contact BROOD today to meet Dolly! Her adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. We adopt to residents of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, DC, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania. Do not apply to adopt from BROOD if you live in another state. We require a virtual home visit and a veterinary reference. The age of BROOD dogs is an estimate, as very few come with exact age records. 05/15/2026

Story
Diane, who also goes by Lulu in her foster home, is a 2-year-old classic Basset with a soft coat, a gentle heart, and a deep love for her people. This sweet girl is quiet and calm indoors, often described as a “love bug” who will happily place her paws in your lap to ask for pets and attention. She’s housetrained, uses a doggie door, and settles nicely into the home, even sleeping peacefully on her own bed at night. Diane truly thrives on companionship and forms strong bonds with her humans.Diane enjoys her daily walks and has made great progress with training, especially when it comes to staying focused on her person. She’s smart, food-motivated, and responds well to guidance and positive reinforcement. While she loves people, she does best as the only dog in the home, as other dogs can make her feel stressed. With continued training and a patient handler, she’s learning how to calmly pass other dogs when given space and direction.Diane would do best in a quieter home where she won’t encounter constant dog traffic and where her adopter is committed to continuing her training. She can be a bit of a food opportunist, so keeping counters clear and working on boundaries will be important. Because she may guard high-value treats, she’s best suited for a home with older, dog-savvy children, age 10 or older. With the right environment and guidance, Diane will reward her family with loyalty, affection, and plenty of sweet, snuggly moments. Contact BROOD today to meet Diane! Her adoption fee is $300.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/.
