Story
MEET TURKEY! Turkey was found wandering alone, covered in ticks, with no one coming to look for him. He was underweight, anemic, and so shut down when he arrived at the vet that the world probably felt very small and very scary. But Turkey? Turkey never stopped trusting us. He didn't fight. He didn't bark or shut us out. He simply let us help him — quietly, gently, with the kind of patience that makes you wonder what he's been through and how he still has so much grace left to give. When we picked him up from the vet to head to his foster home, his tail was wagging. He rode calmly in the car, not a peep of protest — just a beagle boy ready to finally feel safe. And the moment he walked through the door of his foster home, he exhaled. Turkey is currently working through heartworm treatment and being treated for Lyme disease. He's still bony and building back his strength, but every day he's filling out a little more — in body and in spirit. Once he's fully healed, Turkey is going to make someone an extraordinary companion. We believe he'll be a true velcro dog — devoted, gentle, and deeply bonded to his people. He's already shown us who he is: a dog who chooses trust even when the world hasn't earned it yet. Turkey is not yet available for adoption while he completes treatment, but we'd love to hear from the right family. If you think you might be his person, reach out to us at info@dogsdeservebetter.org. Some dogs find you right when you need them. We think Turkey is that dog for someone. 🧡

MEET PENELOPE! Summer is here, and so is this girl's GLOW UP! We are so incredibly proud of how far Penelope has come — she is ready for her forever home, and we are on a mission to find her one before she hits her one-year mark with us on June 17th! Penelope came to us from a tough situation, but you would absolutely never know it looking at her now. She is thriving in her foster home, soaking up all the love and comfort she deserves like the queen she is. Her foster has been capturing all her best moments in compilation videos, and honestly — you need to see them. This girl is something else. Penelope — affectionately known as Peepee — is a sweet, sassy, and totally loveable girl who has blossomed so much since coming into our care. She has fully embraced cozy indoor life (pillow forts and snuggles, yes please!), and her confidence just keeps growing every single day. She has warmed up beautifully and loves being around her people and her foster sister. Her leash skills have come SO far and are honestly impressive, but she's equally happy soaking up a sunny spot in the yard or assisting with gardening activities. She gets along wonderfully with dogs of all sizes and would love a home with a canine bestie and a fenced-in yard to share. Patient, gentle, and completely heart-stealing — with those Dobby ears and panda eyes, Penelope has a way of making you fall in love without even trying. If you're interested, submit an application! This girl is ready to be someone's perfect dog. 🩷

Story
Meet Joey 💛 Joey didn’t grow up knowing the comforts of home. Left to survive on his own for years, he learned to be cautious — and for good reason. But Joey is proving that even after a hard start, growth is possible. In the last few months, we’ve watched him begin to open up. He’s curiously interested in people now, choosing to come closer, allowing gentle pets, and showing us that he wants to connect — he just needs a little time. Joey is around 35–40 lbs and estimated to be 6–8 years old. He finds confidence in other dogs and would do best with a calm, steady canine companion to help show him the ropes. Recently, Joey began an in-home board and train program where he’s gaining real experience living inside a home — learning routines, building trust, and discovering what it means to relax in a safe environment. We are so excited for this next chapter for him. But here’s what Joey will need next: When his training is complete, he will need a foster home to continue that progress. We do not want him returning to traditional boarding after he’s worked so hard to adjust to home life. Joey needs a patient, understanding foster willing to give him time, space, and consistency. A secure fenced yard would be ideal, and a confident resident dog would be a huge bonus. This sweet boy has already come so far. Now he just needs someone willing to help him keep going. Could you be the soft landing Joey is waiting for? 💛

Belinda This little girl has been waiting long enough! Life didn’t start out kind for Belinda. Before she ever knew a gentle hand or a warm voice, she knew hunger, neglect and the loneliness of being over looked. Rescued from a hoarding situation, she arrived having never really experienced what it means to be loved- or noticed. But here’s the thing about Belinda: she showed up anyway. Quiet, watchful, and full of a cautious curiosity that hints at something wonderful waiting underneath the surface. She’s the kind of dog who won’t demand your attention- she’ll simply appear beside you, close enough to feel safe, watching you with those soft eyes as she slowly figures out that the world isn’t always as cold as the one she came from. She’s learning. Every single day, she’s learning. Other dogs? She’ll get there. New environments? Give her time. Trust? She’s already starting to find it. What Belinda needs right now is a quiet, patient foster who understands that healing isn’t linear. Who understands that progress looks different every day , and that sometimes the greatest gift you can give an animal is simply the freedom to feel safe without any pressure to perform. If you’ve loved a shy dog before- you understand the magic of earning that kind of trust- then you already know why Belinda is worth it. 4/21/26

Moped is a sweet, Happy go lucky Beagle/Dachshund mix guy who is bursting with personality! He’s a certified lap dog who loves being close to his people- but don’t be surprised if he suddenly gets the zoomies while playing. He’s currently thriving in his foster home with another dog and takes his cues from his canine companions, making him a great fit for a home with another easygoing pup. Moped is crate trained, good with other dogs, and a total snuggle bug. He is a little self concious about a small benign tumor on his head, but he wants to assure you that it is completely harmless and just adds to his unique charm!

Story
After spending their lives in a loving home, these two sweet senior beagles have found themselves at Fluvanna SPCA through no fault of their own. Their beloved family is entering long-term hospital care and, with heavy hearts, made the difficult decision to find Bert and Ernie a safe place where they can begin their next chapter. These boys are everything you could want in a pair of senior beagles—gentle, affectionate, and full of love. They enjoy the simple things in life: leisurely walks, soft beds, tasty treats, and the comfort of being close to the people they love. Most importantly, they have each other. Bert and Ernie have spent years as loyal companions, and while their world has changed, they still have so much love left to give. We would love to see them find a home where they can stay together and enjoy their golden years surrounded by kindness and comfort. Could you be the family that gives these deserving seniors the happy ending they deserve? 🐶🐶💛

Story
Meet Millie 🤍 Millie came to us after our field team found her sick and chained outside — but if you met her today, you'd never guess how hard her start was. She is pure sweetness, the kind of dog who just wants to be close to you and soak up every bit of love she can get. And honestly? She's earned it. She's currently working through heartworm treatment, taking things slow and resting up — but she's handling it like a champ. In the meantime, she's been discovering what it feels like to be truly cared for: cool air, soft beds, a full belly, and a family who adores her. Safe to say she's settling in just fine. When she's ready, Millie will be looking for a home where she can keep right on being loved. She does great with kids and other dogs, and we think she'll thrive anywhere she's given the chance to just be a dog — cherished, comfortable, and finally at peace. She didn't have someone in her corner before. Now she does — and we're not stopping until she has a forever home to match. We urge you to apply to adopt Millie if a sweet hound sounds like the perfect addition to your family🐾

Story
Gus is a happy-go-lucky young Basset mix, estimated to be around 1–2 years old, with a tail that never seems to stop wagging (be sure to check out his video!). Friendly, playful, and full of enthusiasm, he loves everyone he meets and quickly makes friends with people, dogs, and even cats. Whether he`s helping his foster dad with yard work, playing tag with the kids, or following his favorite humans from room to room, Gus is happiest when he`s part of the action. At the end of a busy day, this lovable boy is more than happy to curl up in a lap and soak up some cuddles.Gus has plenty of youthful energy and would thrive in an active home that can keep him engaged and entertained. He loves playing with other dogs and would enjoy having a canine companion, though he could also do well as an only dog if his family has plenty of time for him. He enjoys chewing on toys and treats like hoofs and ribs, and as long as he has something to keep him occupied, he`s a very happy pup. While he can occasionally mistake household items for chew toys and tends to make a splash around the water bowl, his goofy antics are all part of his charm.Gus is housetrained and crate trained, rides well in the car, and is surprisingly quiet for a young hound, rarely barking at all. He would love a family with children or active adults who can provide plenty of playtime, walks, and companionship. If you`re looking for a sweet, affectionate dog with a joyful spirit, endless tail wags, and a heart full of love, Gus may be the perfect addition to your family. Contact BROOD today to meet Gus! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. We adopt to residents of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, DC, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania. Story
Diane, who also goes by Lulu in her foster home, is a 2-year-old classic Basset with a soft coat, a gentle heart, and a deep love for her people. This sweet girl is quiet and calm indoors, often described as a “love bug” who will happily place her paws in your lap to ask for pets and attention. She’s housetrained, uses a doggie door, and settles nicely into the home, even sleeping peacefully on her own bed at night. Diane truly thrives on companionship and forms strong bonds with her humans.Diane enjoys her daily walks and has made great progress with training, especially when it comes to staying focused on her person. She’s smart, food-motivated, and responds well to guidance and positive reinforcement. While she loves people, she does best as the only dog in the home, as other dogs can make her feel stressed. With continued training and a patient handler, she’s learning how to calmly pass other dogs when given space and direction.Diane would do best in a quieter home where she won’t encounter constant dog traffic and where her adopter is committed to continuing her training. She can be a bit of a food opportunist, so keeping counters clear and working on boundaries will be important. Because she may guard high-value treats, she’s best suited for a home with older, dog-savvy children, age 10 or older. With the right environment and guidance, Diane will reward her family with loyalty, affection, and plenty of sweet, snuggly moments. Contact BROOD today to meet Diane! Her adoption fee is $300.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/.
