I came to the rescue ALMOST 4 YEARS AGO! And all my family has already been adopted but I am still waiting............................................ And I am not sure WHY, except I am a smart and busy boy. I would do best in a single dog home...one great thing about me is...you don't have to trudge me to the dog park.... i prefer to be at home with YOU. I am good with cats too!! Sarge is a neutered 2 year old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix currently being fostered in Denver, CO. Sarge is an outgoing, playful, and affectionate boy with a big personality and an even bigger love for fun. He is smart, curious, and full of energy, and he thrives when he has opportunities to play, explore, and be active with his people. Sarge loves other dogs and is always eager to make friends. He will happily nudge a dog to invite them to play and enjoys running and tug of war, especially with dogs his size or larger. While he gets excited and may pull toward dogs on leash, he is not aggressive and does well with slow, proper introductions. He is great at picking up on cues and will back off when another dog is done playing. Sarge has a moderate to high energy level and would do best in an active home. He would love daily walks, hikes, playtime, and mental stimulation. A fenced yard would be a big bonus, but he could also thrive with a family committed to keeping him exercised. He would do well with or without another dog in the home. On leash, Sarge could use some continued training. He is strong and tends to pull, but he responds well to guidance and does great with a gentle leader. He is fully house trained and crate trained, sleeping in his crate overnight and when his people are out. He can also be trusted with free roam, as he is not destructive. Sarge is a total lovebug with people. He is very cuddly, affectionate, and happy to greet new friends, though he may jump a bit when excited. He loves toys and proudly hoards them, lining them up one by one like treasured possessions. One of his cutest habits is doing a full somersault onto his dog bed after running inside. Sarge would be an amazing match for an active person or family looking for an adventure buddy. Older kids or dog savvy children would be best since he can be jumpy when excited. With continued leash training, plenty of toys, and lots of outdoor time, Sarge will be a loyal, joyful companion. ***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. I was found in a neighborhood, wandering in the blistering heat as well as the "colder" weather (40's in San Antonio is REALLY COLD :D And the lady who took time to feed me and gain my trust was the same lady who saved me! She knew that I was a GOOD dog, just looking for someone to save me from the streets and give me HOPE for a better life. No one really knows my back story, but some things are obvious.... I am smart and sensitive to new environments, I am sweet and CUDDLY, I am LOVING being back in a home and have been potty trained since minute one.... I love my unstuffed toys and carry my "baby" around all day. I am a mess with fireworks or other loud- end of the world- kind of stuff. I am not a huge fan of bathing but LOVE a great car ride!! Ruger is a special boy who needed a special name!! In German my name stands for "spearman" or famous warrior..... guess what?? I am a LOVER, not a FIGHTER!! Now, I have had a ruff start to my life, but my life's prospects are so SO much better now that I am rescued and loved and safe! I was found by a nice guy on the streets of Austin, TX so SO skinny and so SO scared! Now, he did the best he could but when he ended up in drug rehab I was taken to the rescue here and my life has REALLY begun now! I am still skinny but nothing like I was before, I am a nervous fella and burn through some calories every day. I have a sweet and scared personality when you first meet me, but I get over that fairly quickly. i need a breed knowledgeable owner and. strong leader to help me build up my confidence too.
