Mariam is four years old, weighs just 10 pounds, and has spent far too much of her life learning how not to be a dog. Mariam is a tiny Bichon with a very timid heart. She spent her life being bred in a puppy mill, and the world she knows is a very different one from the warm, loving home she so desperately deserves. She doesn’t understand all the things that come naturally to other dogs—how to relax, how to play, how to ask for affection, or even what it feels like to simply be touched by a loving hand. She is scared. She is unsure. And honestly… she will break your heart. But behind those worried eyes is a little girl who is still waiting to discover that life can be kind….& fun! Mariam doesn’t need someone to expect her to become a happy, confident dog overnight. She needs someone willing to teach her, gently and patiently, what being loved feels like. Someone who will give her the time and space to decompress, learn, and slowly come out of her shell. She deserves a soft bed. She deserves sunshine and walks. She deserves treats and toys. She deserves a warm lap and a gentle hand. She deserves to sleep safely in a home where nobody needs anything from her except to be herself. Most of all, Mariam deserves to experience all the ordinary, wonderful things that a family dog should have had all along. We know she will be a project of the heart. Her progress may come in tiny steps—a curious glance, a little closer approach, a first tail wag, the day she finally accepts being pet. And when that happens, you will know you gave her something no one else ever did: a chance. She simply needs the opportunity to learn what love is. Maybe her forever family is the person who looks into those sad little eyes and says, “You don’t have to be afraid anymore. AN APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETED IN FULL AND APPROVED BEFORE A DOG CAN BE MET. This is a firm policy. Our busy volunteers are not able to respond to questions about the dog or dog meeting requests in the absence of an application. We know these dogs very well because they are in foster care. Please read the profiles of the dog(s) you are interested in prior to submitting an application. If there are specific requirements stated (ie: Fenced Yard or Canine Friend Required) these are included because they are vital to the happiness, health, safety and adoption success of that dog. We are only able to save as many dogs as we have foster homes (https://www.anewchancear.org/foster/faqs/) and resources for. We provide medical care including vaccinations, testing, deworming, spaying/neutering and microchipping before transporting our dogs. We provide all supplies, preventatives and any follow up vet care necessary while they are in foster care. These costs are high and the number of lives we can save is entirely dependent upon donations from people like you. We do not receive funding from private foundations or government sources.
