Story
Meet Athena! This gorgeous 1 year old Border Collie x Australian Shepherd mix is looking for a home that can give her the kind of life she’s been dreaming of. Athena came to us after her previous family made the difficult but loving decision to surrender her when they realized she wasn’t getting the enrichment, structure, and outlet she needed to truly thrive. They wanted her to have the opportunity to find a home better suited for her energy level and intelligence — and we admire them for putting her needs first. Athena is exactly what you’d expect from a young herding breed mix: smart, active, eager, and absolutely begging for a job to do. She’s the kind of dog that wants to be involved in life. Whether that means hiking, running, learning tricks, playing fetch, exploring trails, or even trying out dog sports, Athena is happiest when both her body and mind are being engaged. When meeting new people, Athena can be a little bashful at first, but give her a few minutes and her sweet personality starts to shine through. Once she feels comfortable, she becomes affectionate, playful, and eager for attention. She does well with other dogs, doesn’t mind cats, and absolutely lights up around children. Because she gets so excited, she would need supervision and guidance around younger kids — not because there’s a mean bone in her body, but because she still needs help learning manners and can be jumpy when she’s excited. Her previous owners reported that Athena can become destructive when left alone and bored, but honestly, that’s not unusual for a young, intelligent working breed without enough stimulation. Athena isn’t a “bad” dog — she’s simply a dog that needs an outlet, consistency, and someone willing to invest time into helping her succeed. With exercise, structure, enrichment, and continued training, we truly believe Athena is going to blossom into an incredible companion. If you’ve been looking for a smart, athletic, loving dog that’s ready to be your adventure buddy and loyal sidekick, Athena may just be your girl.

Meet Plankton: He’s Got a Plan (to be your best friend!) Are you looking for sweet guy with a name that’s a total conversation starter? Meet Plankton! Don't let the name fool you—he isn't looking for world domination or a secret recipe. He’s just looking for a cozy home and a family to call his own. I'm on stray hold until 4/28/26. If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2719214##

Echo is a sweet and spunky 8 year old, 31lb Shepherd mix, but you wouldn`t be able to tell with her energetic and playful personality! She is looking for a forever home where she can run, play, and snuggle her way into your heart. She loves people and is older kid-friendly, and she`s already house-trained! With a little practice, Echo`s got fetch down pat - she`s working on bringing the ball back and can`t wait to play with you! She`s looking for a fun and active household where she can be the center of attention as the only pet.If you`re looking for a loyal companion who will spoil you with love and keep you on your toes, Echo is your girl!

Hi, I'm Elsa! I’m a fun-loving 3-year-old mixed breed with tons of energy and a big heart! Playing is my favorite thing—especially a good game of fetch or tug-o-war. I’d love to be your one-and-only pet, but I do great with kids and would be thrilled to have some human playmates. If you’re looking for a loyal, playful best friend, I’m your girl!
