He may not be felling any trees, but he is absolutely in the business of felling hearts. He settled into foster life quickly and has proven himself to be an easy, adaptable companion who fits right into the rhythm of a household. Daily Routine Lumberjack is up and ready by 7:00 a.m. and kicks off the morning with a walk — he strongly prefers to potty outdoors, which makes housetraining very straightforward. Three walks a day would make him a very happy boy, and he'd likely make an excellent jogging buddy in cooler weather. He's content to hang out near his people throughout the day without being underfoot, though he does have lovely velcro moments where he'll seek you out for some quality affection. Once he's had his fill, he settles right back down without fuss. At night he sleeps quietly on the floor near his humans — no crate needed, no snoring, no drama. Personality Lumberjack is calm, confident, and genuinely sweet. He charmed the DPS volunteers at intake, coming up to every single one and politely asking for pets and love. He's independent (not demanding) but punctuates his day with warm, affectionate check-ins that are impossible to resist. He wags his tail at every person he meets, loves a good brushing session, and is happiest simply being part of the household routine. He doesn't need much entertainment; your presence is enough. One delightful quirk: Lumberjack has a gorgeous, soulful howl that emerges when he hears sirens. It's more endearing than disruptive — he's a dog who appreciates his people and isn't shy about saying so. Social Skills Lumberjack is friendly and polite with other dogs — calm curiosity, tail wagging, good manners on approach. He does best in a home with another similarly-sized or smaller dog, and we suspect he has some playful energy to share with the right canine companion. His current foster sibling is a bit too dignified to indulge him, but he keeps trying with good humor and zero pushiness. He reads other dogs' cues well and backs off when needed, which is a genuinely lovely quality. He does have a small soft spot when the other dog gets all the attention — he'll gently insert himself into the middle of things, not aggressively, just a quiet 'don't forget about me.' Hard not to find it charming. When it comes to people, Lumberjack is a lover through and through. He takes his doorbell duties seriously — announcing visitors with a bark or two — but the moment someone steps inside, he's all wags and wiggles. He hasn't had the chance to meet children in his foster home, but given how immediately and genuinely he warms to every single person he encounters, we suspect he'd be wonderful with kids too. Activity Level & Interests Lumberjack loves walks and takes them seriously — he likes to be at the front of the pack and pulls a little, though it's more enthusiasm than bad manners and is easily manageable with practice. He shows zero interest in chasing birds or squirrels, making walks in busy neighborhoods a genuine pleasure. Toys and fetch aren't really his thing — he finds his joy in walks, good food, and good company, and he's a wonderful fit for someone who enjoys daily activity without needing a high-energy playmate at home. Training & Home Life He's a curious and clever boy — he's already figured out the stairs and briefly investigated a weak spot in the fence, though he redirected easily. A securely fenced yard is a plus. A note on food: Lumberjack is a bit selective. He passed on chicken-and-rice kibble and several treats before finding his groove with Badlands Ranch kibble, which he now enjoys for both meals and snacks. His new family may want to keep that on hand during the transition. Why Lumberjack? He settled in fast, sleeps soundly, loves his walks, and asks for very little beyond your company and the occasional good brushing. Steady, sweet, and solid as his name suggests — Chonk by nickname, Lumberjack by name, and an absolute treasure by nature. April 7, 2026, 2:18 pm
