Story
Meet Xhara! Xhara is a year old and initially came to us back in June of 2025 through a Humane Investigations Case through the City of Pittsburgh when she was just a puppy. Now, a year later, she is back to us after her owners were unable to keep her. Xhara is a very sweet girl once she gets to know you and is comfortable with you, and will often try to jump up excitedly on her friends. However, she can be a bit sensitive when meeting new people and can get a bit shy of handling from people she doesn't know. Xhara is a Cane Corso - and therefore we are asking adopters to have previous Cane Corso or guardian breed experience who know how to handle a pup of her size and strength - as she is very strong. She would do well in a home with only adults who will be able to respect and manage her signals, and respect her space and boundaries. She could potentially live with another dog pending a successful meet and greet. If you are interested in this special girl, please reach out to the Placement Team to learn more about her. Fill out an application -> thinkingoutsidethecage.org All of our animals are altered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines before being made available for adoption. **WE ARE CURRENTLY DOING ADOPTIONS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. YOU MUST CALL TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING. PLEASE LEAVE US A VOICEMAIL IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO REACH US. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING.- CCDP STAFF** Hi there. My name is Shavo. I'm about 1 1/2 years old and I weigh about 65 lbs. I was found as a stray in the Salem area and I was brought into the pound. Though I am obviously a mix, I have a very corso-like personality. I can be a bit aloof and untrusting of new people, but once I get to know you, I am a very sweet and affectionate boy. I have been good around the other dogs, especially females. I love to play. I don't appreciate dominant or pushy male dogs. I am very clean in my kennel and I do appear to have been a house dog at some point before making my way into the pound. If you're looking for a sweet dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. Our adoption fee is $152. We accept cash, check or credit/ debit cards for adoption fees. If you pay using a credit or debit card, a convenience fee of 2.39% will also be applied. If paying by check, you will need 2. One Check will be for the dog license, and one will be for your dog's adoption fee, which includes heartworm testing (for dogs 6 months of age old and older), parvo/distemper vaccine, rabies vaccine, bordetella vaccine, 3 days of panacur de-wormer, spay or neuter surgery, microchip, and a current Ohio dog license. We DO offer foster to adopt. (We will NOT accept cash for foster to adopt). We highly recommend you do a foster to adopt with your new dog if you are not 100% sure your new dog is going to work out in your home. Foster to adopt gives you a couple of weeks with the dog to make sure they are a good fit with your family before your payment is processed and the adoption is finalized. ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet. If you're driving a long distance to adopt, please verify that the vetting process has been completed and dog you're interested in adopting is still available for adoption. The above mentioned vetting is all included in your adoption fee. The adoption fee and what is included in the adoption fee is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Adoptions MUST be done at the pound and in person as there is paperwork to fill out and an adoption contract that must be signed by the adopter. This means you must be willing to travel to our shelter to adopt. If the dog you're interested in adopting has medical conditions or injuries which require medical treatment, we ask that you help with the medical bills, in addition to their adoption fee if possible so we can continue to help the dogs coming in who need additional vet care. We are a county run shelter, therefore we cannot control our intake or the health or behavior of the dogs that come in to our shelter. Although we try our hardest to place all of our adoptable dogs, there are certain circumstances in which any dog in our care could be euthanized at any time and without further notice (IE: sudden untreatable medical condition or injury, temperament or behavioral problems which may not be apparent when the dog first arrives, etc.), therefore all dogs at our shelter should be considered urgent. We try our absolute hardest to never have to euthanize for space and have not had to do so for many years thanks to the ongoing support from the public and high adoption rates. Please remember; the adoption of a more highly adoptable dog will mean more time for the less adoptable dog in the kennel next to him! Shelter hours are Monday-Friday: 8 am- 4 pm. Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 8 am - 12 pm. Adoptions are always welcome any day of the week/ weekend and on holidays. We are here everyday to care for the dogs and the best way to make our day is to see our dogs go to loving families. There is nobody in the office on Saturday, Sunday or holidays, so therefore, we are unable to answer or return phone calls over the weekend. We are only staffed to take care of the dogs and do adoptions over the weekends/ on holidays. Can't adopt a dog? We would love to have more volunteers who are able to spend time with our dogs! The dogs LOVE going for walks and the socialization and exercise helps make the dogs more adoptable. Story
Meet Nola — your future best friend and full-time ray of sunshine! At just 9 months old and around 45 lbs, Nola is a happy, playful mixed-breed pup who is finally getting her chance to just be a puppy. And trust me—she's making up for lost time in the best way possible. Nola's journey hasn't been easy. She came into rescue with a serious injury that required not one, but two orthopedic surgeries (a femoral head osteotomy and fracture repair). She spent four long months healing, resting, and patiently waiting for her moment to run and play again. And now? She's back on her feet and ready to live life to the fullest. This girl is pure joy. She loves her people deeply and greets the world with a wagging tail and an eager heart. Whether its going for walks, playing with her dog friends, or learning new things (she's very smart and food-motivated!), Nola throws herself into everything with enthusiasm. The best part? She gets along beautifully with dogs and kids—making her a wonderful fit for so many types of homes. However, she does need to be in a home without cats. She's doing great with going potty outside and is picking up on routines quickly. With a little continued guidance, she's going to grow into an incredible companion. Because of her past injuries, Nola may develop some arthritis in her leg as she gets older. Its something to be aware of, but it certainly doesn't slow her down right now—she's active, happy, and loving every minute of her second chance. Nola is looking for a family who will cherish her, play with her, and give her all the love she missed out on early in life. In return, shell give you loyalty, laughter, and a whole lot of tail wags. If you're ready for a resilient, joyful pup who will remind you every day how sweet life can be—Nola is your girl! Apply today at: https://airtable.com/shrAznkHf1ruIqQwq

Story
Meet Girlfriend — A Loyal Guardian Looking for Her Person Girlfriend is a stunning 1.5-year-old Cane Corso mix, weighing in at around 100 pounds of strength, beauty, and devotion. With her gorgeous brindle coat and soulful eyes, she turns heads — but it’s her loyalty and heart that truly make her special. Girlfriend came to us from local animal control and has already overcome a lot, including undergoing double cherry eye surgery while in our care. She’s now healthy, feeling great, and ready for her next chapter. She can be a little shy when first meeting new people, but give her a little time and you’ll quickly see her affectionate side shine through. Once she trusts you, Girlfriend is incredibly loving — she’ll happily cover you in kisses, lean her full weight into you for scratches, and soak up all the belly rubs you’re willing to give. She forms strong bonds and is the definition of a loyal companion. Girlfriend's a smart cookie. She knows commands like “sit,” “laydown,” and “paw,” and she's super food-motivated — makes training a breeze. But what she really loves is strolling around with her humans. Yep, this girl’s got style: she walks wonderfully on a harness and is always up for an adventure. She is a very strong girl and will need someone physically capable of handling her size and power. She doesn’t always realize just how big she is, so continued training and structure will be important to help her succeed. She would do best in a home with no cats and should be considered dog selective. A home without children is also required to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort. About the Breed: Cane Corsos are intelligent, powerful working dogs bred for protection and loyalty. They are not a beginner breed. They thrive with confident, experienced owners who understand the importance of leadership, structure, and consistent training. Without proper guidance, their size and instincts can become overwhelming — but in the right hands, they are incredibly devoted, obedient, and loving companions. Girlfriend is looking for a breed-experienced owner who understands large guardian breeds and is committed to providing: —Consistent training and boundaries —Proper socialization —Physical and mental stimulation —A structured, stable home environment She is currently getting the hang of housetraining and will continue to improve with routine and patience. Girlfriend has so much love to give to the right person. She’s not the dog for everyone — but for someone experienced and committed, she will be an incredibly rewarding companion who will stand by your side through everything. If you’re ready for a loyal, protective, and deeply loving best friend, Girlfriend is waiting for you. Adoption application can be found here-https://airtable.com/shrAznkHf1ruIqQwq

Story
This beautiful three year old Cane Corso weighs approximately 100 pounds and is everything many people love about the breed. Loyal, affectionate, and devoted to her people. She enjoys attention, loves being with her family, and doesn't take long to warm up to new people. She does not mind getting her nails clipped or a bath which speaks to her temperament. She was also favorite at her previous shelter which says a lot about what a beautiful soul she isAlthough we have not observed these behaviors yet in our care, Sequoia's previous owners reported some resource guarding behaviors in the home. They reported that she had displayed resource guarding in the home involving the unaltered male Cane Corso she lived with and a young child.Because of her size, breed traits, and reported history, we are looking for an adult only home with no other pets that understands large guardian breeds and is committed to providing structure, supervision, and appropriate management. As with any newly adopted dog, we recommend allowing her time to decompress and learn the expectations of her new home.LoyalLovingReady for a fresh startWe also provide training to any approved adopters. If you think you may be the right fit for this beautiful girl, we would love to hear from you.If interested in adopting Sequoia, please fill out an application found at www.allaboutthepawz.comLocated in Youngstown, Ohio - must be within an hour or so of Youngstown.*we do not respond to inquires or matches, please fill out an application and we will reach out via email once received*
