Story
"Jake" is an approx 5-yo, well-over 100-lb neutered male Caucasian Shepherd mix (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_Shepherd_Dog) who is simply the sweetest, most mellow, gentle giant you'd ever want to meet! Jake is vaccinated and microchipped. I've never been so stumped on a dog's primary breed as I am with Jake. Though the shelter he came from (Merced County animal shelter) listed Jake as a Malamute mix, I'm not sure that's his primary breed. He does have a deep chest, extraordinarily thick coat and short, perky ears like a Malamute. However, he does not have a Malamute's characteristic curled tail, and his sabled coloring is very different from a Malamute. Nonetheless, we have to pick a primary breed to describe Jake, so for now it's Malamute. Jake is surely one of the friendliest dogs you'll ever meet. He not only loves meeting new people, he is immediately affectionate with whoever shows him affection. Though I have not observed Jake with children, I wouldn't hesitate placing him in a home with even toddlers; he is just that gentle. Jake is fantastic with the other dogs at GSRSV's rescue ranch. He loves to chase one of my more active dogs in play, and has never even been close to a fight. I'm sure that Jake would be good w/ small dogs and likely cats as well. Jake is completely housetrained. He alternates between hanging out on the front porch and inside the house (via a dog door). He's not a very active dog; he pretty much lays around most of the day. When I walked Jake at Southside Park in Sacramento after receiving him from the transporter, he did great on leash. (I haven't had him on leash since.) Jake LOVES to go for rides in a vehicle. I haven't seen Jake play with toys nor swim in the pond here. While Jake is healthy in general, his hips are not good. He walks and runs with a somewhat stiff gait, and came to GSRSV's rescue ranch acting like a much older dog--likely due to his overweight condition and the 3 1/2 months he had spent at the Merced County Animal Shelter with little exercise. I immediately put Jake on a crash diet, and let the freedom of 45 acres to romp on and several other dogs to play with work their magic. Jake is way more mobile now than when he first came to GSRSV, but he will never be a long-distance hiker. I give Jake both a high-quality glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement daily, as well as CBD oil. I also give him a two 81 mg safety-coated aspirin daily. I will recommend that his adopter continue with these supplements. It will also be extremely important for whoever adopts Jake to exercise him regularly and often to keep his joints from becoming overly stiff and to minimize his calorie intake, as Jake has a very slow metabolism. Jake LOVES to eat! GRSRV rescued Jake in January 2025. His adoption fee is $250.

To apply or learn more, go to: https://www.heartsforpawsrescue.com/219873/2025/9/28/penny Meet Penny – The Sweetest, Easiest Shepherd Girl Penny has a heart of pure gold. She’s a gentle, kind, and easygoing shepherd who absolutely adores people of all ages. After a rough start in life, Penny has decided that humans are really her favorite – she much prefers the company of people over dogs. Penny isn’t reactive or aggressive toward other dogs and can walk nicely on leash around them. She’s just a bit selective about nose-to-nose greetings and would be happiest as the only dog in the home where she can soak up all the love and attention. She’s a mostly quiet girl who rarely barks, loves to nap, and has a very chill, relaxed vibe… but every now and then she gets a hilarious case of the zoomies! Because of that, a single-story home with carpeting (or lots of rugs) is a bonus for her comfort and safety. Penny truly is one of the sweetest, most easygoing shepherds we’ve met in a long time. Penny’s Perks: • Gentle, kind, and people-focused • Would prefer to be the only dog • Non-reactive on leash around other dogs • Rarely barks – quiet companion • Loves to sleep and relax • Occasional zoomies that will make you smile • Great in the car • Easy to walk on leash • Wonderful, loyal companion Penny is looking for a loving home where she can finally exhale, be cherished, and enjoy a soft bed, gentle walks, and her favorite thing in the world: her person. If you’d like to learn more about Penny or set up a meet & greet, please reach out! She is currently located in Davis, CA. Contact 530-304-7629 for more information! Interested in adopting? Story
Dogs don't come any cuter than Daffodil! Daffodil is an approximately 3-year-old bundle of fun who is eager to find her forever home. She is the sweetest girl who will happily make herself comfy in your lap and cover your face in kisses. We haven't had the heart to tell her she is slightly too big to be a lap dog. Daffodil is fully grown and weighs around 60lbs (although she could benefit from losing a few pounds). Daffodil came to us after she was found as a stray. One of our foster homes agreed to take her in until an owner was found, but an owner never came forward. A couple of weeks after she was found, Daffodil gave birth to 9 puppies! All of her puppies have been adopted, so now it's her turn! Daffodil is a wiggly goofball and loves to explore and go on adventures. Now that she doesn't have to care for her babies, she is ready to enjoy life and soak up all the human attention for herself. Daffodil has been doing great learning her basic manners, and has learned "sit". She is very food-motivated, which makes training a blast. Her new family will need to be prepared to dedicate the time to continue to work on her basic manners to help her be the best girl she can be. Daffodil would do best with someone who has large dog experience, as she is a strong and enthusiastic girl. Daffodil is a moderate-energy gal. When she's at home, she is happy to chill on the couch and enjoy movie marathons, but she also has the energy for long walks and hikes. She loves car rides and hops right in and is ready to go. She loves making new human friends and has been a popular girl at our adoption events. She is quick to cover your face in kisses and will lean into you for a hug. She oozes happiness and can't wait to find her fur-ever family! Daffodil would do best as an only dog or with an easy-going male dog. She needs a kitty-free home. Due to her rambunctious nature, Daffodil would do best with an adult-only home or with kids 12 years or older. Daffodil has been doing very well with her house and crate training. She sleeps through the night in her crate and has done well hanging out in there when her foster mom is at work or gone for a few hours. Daffodil is such a sweet girl, and she deserves her happy-ever-after. If you think that might be with you, submit an adoption application today!   Daffodil's adoption fee is $250.   Apply to adopt here!  https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/   Applications are also available on the website (www.yolospca.org)  It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogs@yolospca.org. For more general questions, please see our website at www.yolospca.org. August 10, 2025, 6:49 pm
