HOW TO ADOPT: This dog is currently spending time in a foster home. To schedule a time to meet this dog, please contact ARL-Adoption@arl-iowa.org.---- Great dog with tons of potential who is looking for a special family who will continue working with her to help her gain confidence and learn that life is full of great things. If you're up to the challenge, read on! - Came from an environment where she did not get the normal socialization that most puppies get, so the world is still a very scary place for her - Has come a long way in the weeks we have been working with her, and will take treats from people she has a relationship with, and will goofily play with toys - We are requiring a fenced yard to ensure she stays safe and secure as she has had no experience with being on leash - Has worked with our behavior team on being OK with being touched, and has solicited some attention; we've seen lots of progress, but things such as petting from strangers, leashing up, and anything a "normal" dog would like can still be quite scary for her, so she will need continued help over time from her new family - Leaving interactions 100% up to her and using treats as rewards are great ways to gain her trust; she LOVES having the choice to interact and have her space - Has shown interest in other dogs and would really benefit from a calm, confident dog friend in her new home so she can follow their lead and build confidence by watching them navigate daily life - Needs a teens-and-up home right now, as young children are way too much for her. A mature, structured home would be perfect! - Since she's still learning to live with people, vet visits will have to be approached differently, so it will be important to talk with your veterinarian about ways to help her be most comfortable - Looking for a predictable home with very patient people who understand that it will take her not days but weeks to become completely comfortable. If you're willing to give her that time, you'll see, just as we have, that she is worth the wait! It will be incredibly rewarding to watch her become more trusting every day! The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Brown Secondary Color: White Weight: 8.2 Age: 3yrs 3mths 1wks

Story
Baby Bat embodies the personality, uniqueness and likeness of the Batman. First, he works alone. No sidekicks or partners. He prefers solitude and his space. Baby Bat has lived with his foster and her dog pack for 5 years, he gets along with them but tolerates them at most. He would do well in a home where he is the only dog, no children, and adults only. Next, Baby Bat is an apex predator. Which means he needs his sleep and food and not to be interrupted or coddled when given either. Baby Bat is not a lap or cuddly dog. Finally, did we mention Baby Bat is a Chihuahua mix? That's a really important detail! Baby Bat is a great and loyal dog seeking a great family to adopt him! Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX) Out of state adoption fee is $400 (includes transport to your area - $50 Temporary Fuel Charge will be added)

Story
TEXAS ADOPTION ONLY Grandpa Lucky I have the weirdest name. What is that? "Grandpa Lucky. Sounds like I had a lot of luck in my short life, but I am not quite sure of all that. I just look like a Grandpa because I have lived outside most of the time and it is hard on a fella. I am only about 6 years old we think. First off, I was fished out of a river and taken to the city dog pound. I can't tell you how I got into the river, but foster mom suspects I had a little help with that. Well, it was lucky that I got fished out, but then I went to the city pound where I had 3 days before my time was up...literally. But then I got lucky again because foster mom saw me and just had to have me to foster so I got a ticket out of there. I was a pretty skinny dude when she got me, and it wasn't too long before she discovered that I love to eat. She noticed that I was having a little trouble walking on my back legs and that wasn't so good so when we got me checked out, it turns out that I have a little compression of my T4 to T6 vertebrae, whatever that is. Not good. But the vet lady said that nothing needed to be done for that so that was lucky. So, when I get a little tired, I hop like a bunny and the other times when I feel good, I walk like a regular dog. I had some tests done on my blood and I have worms living in my heart of all places. I am told that is not good. But it is lucky for me that foster mommy is giving me the medicines to kill those little varmints over time and not all at once. She said it is easier on me if we do it this way. Plus, it is lucky that I get the medicine in a little bit of tasty food that I love. Did I tell you I like to eat? About that, foster mommy tells me I can't gain too much weight, or it will be too hard on my joints and back and that won't be good. Aren't I lucky to have her to take care of me? The one complaint I have with foster mommy is that she doesn't have enough time to let me sleep in her lap during the day. I would like to have a lap in my new forever home and someone who will love me as much as foster mommy does. Because of the medicines that I am taking to kill the worms in my heart, we are looking for a forever home in the San Antonio area so I wouldn't have to travel so far. Besides having a lap to sleep in during the day, I want to sleep in the bed with you at night. I can't jump off the bed though but being with you all the time is what I want. Then I would really feel lucky! $200 Local adoption fee (in Texas)

Story
This is Buddy, and he can't wait to be yours! Buddy is a sweet young Pug mix that started life off as a feral, until he was caught by a sweet and loving foster. Buddy got the good life after that! Spoiled with treats and given so much love he's developed into a great dog. Currently, Buddy is on bedrest after completing heartworm treatment so he needs lots of love and patience while he's resting and recovering. He's a very friendly boy and does great with pretty much everyone. He would do best in a household with an active family. Buddy does tend to bark at smaller animals so he would do best in a household that doesn't have farm animals or other small pets. Dogs and cats he is fine with, though he has not had much experience with cats. Buddy would do well paired with another calm and confident dog. Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX)

Story
I'm Zeus. I'm a gentle and resilient soul. Despite my visual impairment, I navigate the world with grace and curiosity. My other senses are keen, and I rely on them to explore my surroundings. I even learned to use a doggie door before my friends who have good eyesite! I will be someone's loyal companion. I love cuddling up and listening to the sounds of the world outside. My blindness doesn’t hold me back; instead, I think it adds to my charm. I like basking in the sun, treats and lap time. I'd like a quiet home, a cozy spot by the window where I can feel the sun and hear the birds and a a soft bed. If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to request an appointment to meet me. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. No need to call to find out about me, you can ask questions on the application or email questions to info@polkcountyhumanesociety.org. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and Minneapolis, MN areas twice a month. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual and we will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veteinarian ($35). Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! ##2063692##

Story
PLEASE NOTE: we want to rehome Lightning with his bro, Thunder Lightning is a little baby. He loves anything and everything he sees. He cuddles hard and loves harder. He also loves chasing squirrels. He is a black shi-zhu-chihuahua-lab mix. He looks like a lab puppy though and acts like it too. I got Lightning (and his bro Thunder) about 4 years ago. My fiancé and I are moving to Chicago at the end of July 2025, and want to find a loving home for him and Thunder Lightning: - He loves hard and cuddles harder - He has a goofy little run that is really cute - He LOVES meeting new dogs. He's friends with everybody - He does not do well with cats or squirrels They are some of the friendliest and loving dogs ever. They deserve love and will love back hard. I am hoping to have Lightning stay with Thunder in a new home. They love each other and cannot live without each other.
