Story
Say hello to Sophie! She is an 11-year-old tiny (3.8-pound) Chihuahua who, after some vetting, is now in excellent health. Sophie hasn’t met a person she doesn’t like without any hesitation. She met a cat and, after sniffing it, ignored it, although because of her big eyes, it might not be a good idea to live with an active cat. She does not like and is very scared of big dogs. She loves and is very playful with smaller dogs and would probably do best in a home with a small dog companion. And a child-free home would be best for this fragile little girl.
Sophie came to rescue with severe dental problems, and it was found that her lower jaw had completely disintegrated, and her upper jaw is very thin. This meant that all her remaining teeth had to be pulled, and the utmost care must be taken when feeding her to prevent her upper jaw from cracking. This means all her food must be completely soft, and no chew toys or tug of war play ever. She does love to play with her humans, too.
Sophie is very opinionated, and her opinions include a dislike of clothing, even though she is so tiny. She has been convinced to wear a coat if it is not pulled over her head. She loves to ride in the car, so she will tolerate a soft harness so that she can be buckled into her car seat, but she is very afraid of a leash and will scream and drop to the ground when wearing one. We are working on that, but it means that walking her for potty walks is a chore. Because of this, the ideal home would have a fenced yard so she can go out by herself to potty.
Sophie is completely potty trained, and in all her time with her foster, she has never gone to the bathroom in the house.
Because she came to us so underweight, all her meals have been homemade to entice her to eat, which has created a bit of a food monster when trying to transition now to canned dog food. She eats a combination of people’s food and dog food, but is extremely picky.
She is not barky except when her foster comes home from work, and then zoomies for joy and barks. Sophie loves to either sleep with her person or in her kennel if it is in your room and positioned so she can see you at night, and she insists on covering herself up no matter where she is. It is super cute."
Because of her tiny size, there are only a few preventative medications that are safe for her to take. We will let you know what they are.
Sophie's adoption fee is $350 + MN sales tax.
- You must fill out an adoption application before you are allowed to meet the animal. Please complete the adoption application located on our website: https://smalldogsminnesota.org/adoption-application/
- Small Dog Rescue of MN does not negotiate the adoption fee on our dogs and we must charge sales tax on all adoption fees in order to comply with Minnesota state law. Please note that SDR is philosophically opposed to the idea of buying and selling animals, and we support any future legislation that would remove sales tax from adoption fees. Until then, however, it must be charged.
- Please note that we do not have a shelter, and all dogs are in foster homes. Since we strive to provide the best possible care for our animals, sometimes we cannot answer emails promptly. Please allow 48 hours for us to respond to you.
- You must be 18 years of age to make an adoption request.
