Story
Joseph is an approximately 7 year-old Chihuahua / Terrier mix that currently weighs 21 lbs. Joseph aka as JoeJoe is a calmer dog that enjoys sitting in your lap. When it’s cold you’ll find him under the covers. He is very fond of treats & chewies and will put on a dance performance for one. Healthy snack options he enjoys: blueberries, bananas, apples, tomatoes, celery, peas & carrots. He’s always up for a walk and gets very excited just seeing the leash. He enjoys going on car rides. He likes squeaky toys and his favorite are lamb chops. When you come home, he’ll greet you at the door with a toy. Joseph is extremely outgoing and doesn’t know a stranger. Joseph may look like an old man but this “old man” plays daily. He will play with you, by himself or with his doggy friends. Let’s talk about his doggy friends. Joseph is dog selective meaning he chooses who he likes and who he doesn’t like. He doesn’t like big dogs and he doesn’t like hyper dog. He prefers female dogs to males but he has gotten along with some small male dogs. He would do great as an only dog or in a home with another small calmer dog. His doggy BFF’s he’ll play, wrestle and protect from them from other scary dogs. He’s loyal to the core once he finds a buddy. Since Joseph can be dog selective he must meet every dog in the home before adoption. A secured fenced yard is required. He loves the backyard. On nice days he likes to squirrel & bird watch. JoeJoe is crate, leash & potty trained. He does excellent while his family is away and it is not necessary to crate him. His foster home has a doggy door which he has really came to enjoy. At night he likes to sleep in his human’s bed and will cuddle up next to you. Be prepared he’s going to work way his way under the covers like he owns the place or you can give him his own blanket to burrow under. Joseph is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, HW negative, current on HW preventative and micro chipped. He has also had a recent dental. His adoption fee is $250. To adopt Joseph, go to www.foreveryoursokc.org/adoption-application to apply.

Story
This very handsome boy is Carlos! Carlos is an approximately 4-year-old male Chihuahua who weighs around 8 lbs. He was rescued as a stray from the streets. Carlos is a lovable and affectionate boy, but he does take some time to warm up to people. But once he gets over the hump of just meeting, he will become your loyal companion! He will love laying with you and just spending time doing things together. He does like other dogs and would do best with another dog about his size in the home. NO cats! Carlos would do best with children over the age of 14 only. Carlos needs a home that will give him the time to get adjusted to a new environment. They need to have patience with him as he trusts his new family. The reward will be the most loyal little friend you will ever have! He does need a secure stockade-fenced backyard. HOME VISIT REQUIRED. Carlos is crate and house trained. He may need continued assistance with leash training (recommend a harness). He is neutered, current on vaccines, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. His adoption fee is $250. To adopt Carlos, go to http://www.foreveryoursokc.org/adoption-application to apply.

Story
Maple is an approx. 3 year old Chihuahua that weighs 10 lbs. Maple joined the rescue after finding herself on the euthanasia list at a local shelter very pregnant. Once she arrived to her foster home she gave birth within 24 hrs! We also found out that she was HW+ and would have to go through treatment as well! Maple has been through so much in just the short amount of time we’ve had her she deserves to spend the rest of her life loved and spoiled rotten! After being through so much in her life she is very nervous of new people. She will need an adopter willing to give her time and space to adjust to a new environment. She does great with other small dogs and will require another playful small dog in her home! The company of another dog really helps Maple come out of her shell! Maple is still working on basic dog things such as being picked up, being pet, potty training, & leash training. In her foster home Maple has come such a long way but Maple’s adopter will need to be patient and understanding while they help her learn & adjust! Due to her shy nature a home without kids is required. Maple will also require a secure fence backyard and home check. Maple does love to be near her person she just has to have time to get to know them and understand nothing bad is going to happen! Maple’s favorite thing is to play with her doggy friends & she also loves to play with toys! Maple is crate trained, her crate is a safe space for her, you can often find her laying in there with the door open. Maple is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, went through HW treatment & current on prevention! Maple’s adoption fee is $250. To adopt Maple, go to www.foreveryoursokc.org/adoption-application.

Story
Calling all ChiWAWA lovers!!  Meet Winston. This 3yo 18lb young man is learning how to be a dog in the pack. While we don’t know his back story his scars both outside and inside have told us plenty. Winston came into foster as an emergency surrender. Before that all we know is he had been living in the shelter. He came to us clearly overwhelmed and afraid. It took patience, medication, and ultimately time for us to help Winston understand he was safe and loved.  Looking back at the dog I met to the dog that curls up next to me on the couch every day, it’s safe to say he has grown tremendously in his temperament and behavior.   Winston would absolutely benefit from professional training to help continue building his confidence and letting him fully shine. If you are a chihuahua lover, you know this is an extremely loyal and intelligent breed. Training can provide you and the dog with the best tools for success!  He’s fully crate trained and approximately 98% house trained. He does wear a belly band to prevent marking behavior in the house. We have a medically complex dog who has to use pads so breaking this habit for Winston has been difficult. However, with the belly band on Winston RARELY actually even attempts to mark inside the house. He wears it without any issue, does not try to take it off, and has been in his crate for up to 10 hours without a belly band and without any accidents.  He’s fantastic on a leash and loves to go for walks. He’s curious when he sees other dogs, people, bunnies, cats, etc. but has not shown a high prey drive. He’s coexisting very well with our resident dogsHe’s visited the groomer and they said he was a perfect gentleman!! He’s truly a couch potato who must be covered up with blankets at night and woken up with positive affirmations before going outside He loves rides in the car and curls up in his travel carrier to sleep. He’s been to multiple adoption events and has been very loving to visitors of all ages and co-existed well with other dogs at events.  Now, on to the serious notes. Winston initially displayed some fear based aggression. After being placed on Prozac his behavior has improved greatly for the better. I still believe he would benefit from formal training that could possibly lead to him being weaned off Prozac in the future.*Note* - Fluoxetine (Prozac) CANNOT be stopped abruptly. This medication must be tapered off under the guidance of a veterinarian.  Winston will require a low-ish traffic home with an experienced owner. He has not been cat tested. He will require a home with children 13 or older - while he has NEVER shown ANY concerning behavior towards children of any age, I still believe it would be in his best interest to be in a home with children old enough to understand gentle behavior and signs that a dog may be overstimulated.  The truth is not all dogs that come into foster find homes very easily. Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment and should be done after considering not only if the dog is a good fit for your home, but if your home is a good fit for that dog. Some need extra TLC to help them heal inside and out. So please know that all information provided in his profile is only to give potential adopters all necessary information to make sure he finds the best home possible. We want to set you AND all of our fosters up for success!  Winston deserves a loving home and lifetime of being spoiled. If you think Winston would be a match for you please apply, we would love to set up a meet and greet! In the meantime, Winston will be snoozing on the couch or in the sunshine ##2397183##
