Story
Name: JerryAge: Approximately 7 years old (per Ventura shelter records, though he may be a bit older)Gender: MaleBreed: Chihuahua mix
Rescue Story
Jerry was rescued from a high-kill shelter in California that houses nearly 200 dogs. He’s now safe and getting the second chance he deserves.
Health
Jerry has a grade 2–3 heart murmur, which is currently mild and expected to be easily managed with medication as needed. To ensure he continues to receive the care he needs, the rescue will reimburse the cost of his heart medication for life.
He also has mild to moderate dental disease, which is common for small breed dogs his age. Both conditions are manageable, and he continues to feel good, enjoy walks, and live life comfortably.
Personality
Jerry is a mellow, easygoing little guy with a happy, wiggly greeting when you approach him. He absolutely loves neck scratches and belly rubs and is very treat motivated. He enjoys car rides, relaxes while listening to music, and is perfectly content snoozing the day away—either in his cozy, fleece-covered crate (door open) or on a big, comfy dog bed in his room.
He’s calm and quiet—no barking, even when other dogs are making noise. When he works on his kibble in a puzzle bowl, he shows his excitement with the sweetest little happy squeaks.
Social Skills
Dogs: Jerry does very well on group walks and coexists nicely outdoors. Inside the home, he’s still building confidence when in close quarters with the foster’s resident dogs.
Cats: Not yet introduced.
Kids: Not yet introduced.
Training & Home Life
Leash skills: Excellent on leash and even more comfortable wearing a harness.
Potty trained: Yes! Jerry gives a soft whimper when he needs to go out and quickly takes care of business after a short walk.
Crate trained: He sleeps in his open crate at night but has not been crated with the door closed.
Home alone: Stays in his own room with a large dog bed and crate. He has not damaged anything—even with items within reach.
Sleeping habits: Nights in his covered crate; daytime naps on his big comfy bed.
Ideal Home
Jerry would likely thrive as the only dog in a calm home where he can freely roam and soak up affection from his humans. He doesn’t require much playtime or constant activity—just regular potty breaks, a cozy place to rest, and someone to share a peaceful, laid-back life with.
