Story
Meet Mushu, a 5-year-old Chow Chow looking for his forever home. He came into my life at 7 months old from a woman in Merced who didn’t have the time he deserved, and over the past five years he has proven himself to be one of the most gentle, loyal, and soulful dogs I have ever known. Mushu is fully leash trained, fully house trained, great with other dogs, cats, with moderate energy — equally happy on a long walk or a quiet afternoon at home. He loves the beach and has spent many evenings curled peacefully under a restaurant table without a sound. He is not a biter, not destructive, and not a problem, he is simply a good dog.Like all Chow Chows, Mushu has a dignified personality and a few boundaries worth respecting. He can be cautious around men at first and does not like strangers reaching out to pet him, he will step back or turn away, not out of aggression, but because he needs to trust you before he opens up. Once he does, his loyalty is absolute.

Story
* To be considered for a meet/adoption, please read the full biography to see whether they may be a good fit for your home, then submit an online application at www.dpsrescue.org.* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, July 11th from 12-3 PM unless adopted prior to the event.   All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $700 Meet Apple Fritter   Apple Fritter is a 4 month old Chow puppy with a soft, fluffy coat and an even softer personality. She’s the kind of puppy who feels like a living stuffed animal— quiet, gentle, and endlessly endearing in everything she does. Beneath her fluffy exterior is a thoughtful little pup who is still learning about the world, but doing it at her own calm, steady pace.   Apple starts her mornings around 7:00 a.m. with a quick potty break before happily heading back to bed for a little more sleep. Breakfast comes around 9:00 a.m., after which she takes her time finding just the right potty spot in the yard. During the day, she enjoys a nice balance of play and rest— especially romping around with her resident puppy housemate. The two love to wrestle, chase, and nap together, and when she’s not engaged with her dog friend, Apple is perfectly content chewing toys, exploring the backyard, or lounging nearby.   Because she was still too young and not fully vaccinated during her foster stay, Apple didn’t go on walks yet. Instead, she enjoyed stroller rides, where she calmly observed the world around her without fear or reactivity. Dinner is served around 9:00 p.m., which she greets with noticeably more enthusiasm than breakfast, and then she settles in for the night. While she isn’t a fan of the crate yet, she sleeps quietly through the entire night on the floor of the home, resting peacefully until morning.   Personality   Apple Fritter’s story begins with a shy, timid puppy who spent her first days in foster care quietly hiding under the dining room table, trying to make sense of her new world. But with time, patience, and stability, she slowly blossomed into a gentle, affectionate, and playful companion.   Today, Apple is a calm, sweet-natured puppy who enjoys companionship without needing constant attention. She’s what you might call a “velcro-with-distance” dog— she likes being near her people, often following them from room to room, but is just as happy settling a few feet away, quietly observing while you go about your day.   She is not a demanding or overly needy puppy. Instead, she offers a soft presence: present, calm, and content simply to be part of your space.   Apple rarely barks or whines. When she does vocalize, it’s usually a gentle request to go outside or an excited invitation for her dog friend to play. She quickly learned how to use a doggy door and has adapted beautifully to home life.   Dog Social & Play Style   Apple thrives with other dogs and truly shines in their company. She currently lives with another young puppy, and the two spend their days playing, exploring, and resting together. Apple is gentle during play, enjoys chase and wrestling games, and takes cues well from her canine companions.   She has not yet been introduced to cats or children in her foster home, but her temperament suggests a soft, non-aggressive nature.   Energy Level & Temperament   Apple is a lovely balance of playful and relaxed. She enjoys bursts of puppy energy— running in the yard, playing with toys, and engaging with her dog friend—but she’s equally happy to settle down for long naps and quiet lounging.   She is not hyper or high-strung. Instead, she naturally regulates her energy and transitions smoothly between play and rest.   Training & House Manners   Apple is housetrained and has had no indoor accidents in foster care. She confidently uses the doggy door and prefers doing her business outdoors in the yard, though she sometimes takes her time finding the perfect spot.   She is still working on crate training and is improving steadily, but she currently prefers sleeping on the floor at night, where she rests quietly and without disruption.   Like many puppies, she is still learning boundaries around chewing and may occasionally carry interesting items (like a shoe) into the yard out of curiosity—not destruction. She is not destructive or mischievous, just a playful, inquisitive puppy discovering her environment.   She is not yet familiar with potty pads, as she has consistently been successful going outside.   Ideal Home   Apple Fritter would thrive in a calm, patient home that understands shy puppies need time to blossom. She would likely do best with another gentle dog— either a confident, kind adult dog or another playful puppy who can help guide her.   She is not a high-drive or overly food-motivated puppy, so training should be approached with patience, routine, and positive reinforcement rather than treats alone. She responds best to consistency and gentle encouragement.   Because she is still building confidence in new environments, her future family should be prepared to give her time to adjust and not rush her affection— she will come around beautifully when she feels safe.   Regular grooming will also be important as her fluffy Chow coat grows in and matures.   Why You’ll Love Her   Apple Fritter is one of those rare puppies who brings a sense of calm wherever she goes. She is quiet, steady, and deeply sweet. Living with her feels like sharing space with a soft, living plush toy who quietly follows you from room to room just to be near you.   Everything she does— from her gentle play style to her careful way of exploring the world—feels thoughtful and endearing. She doesn’t demand attention; she earns your affection simply by being herself.   Favorite Story   One day, her foster mom was getting ready for a run and discovered that her left shoe had mysteriously vanished. Moments later, the doggy door flapped open— and there was Apple, having quietly carried the shoe all the way to the farthest corner of the backyard.   She didn’t chew it. She didn’t destroy it. She simply moved it.   It felt like her very soft, very quiet way of saying, “Don’t go without me just yet.”   Apple Fritter is a gentle soul with a big heart, just waiting for the right home to help her continue growing into the wonderful dog she is becoming. July 9, 2026, 6:31 pm

Adoption fee: $700   Meet Sticky Bun!   If you're looking for a puppy who skipped the chaos and went straight to being a wonderful companion, we'd love to introduce you to Sticky Bun. This gorgeous 4 month old Chow puppy already weighs nearly 40 pounds, but don't let her size fool you— she's as gentle, calm, and easygoing as they come. In fact, her foster family says she's the easiest foster they've ever had.   Sticky Bun starts her mornings around 6:30 or 7:00, heads outside for a potty break, enjoys breakfast, and then spends a little time playing in the yard before settling in for a morning nap near her foster mom's home office. Throughout the day, she enjoys hanging out outside with her foster dog siblings, quietly taking in the world around her. After dinner, she's happy to relax with her family before heading to bed around 9:30 or 10:00, where she sleeps soundly on the bedroom floor all night.   Personality   The word everyone uses to describe Sticky Bun is simple: calm.   She has an incredibly steady, thoughtful personality that feels wise beyond her puppy months. While she's playful and enjoys romping around the yard with her foster siblings, she's never over-the-top or wild. Instead, she's happiest simply being near her people.   Sticky Bun isn't a velcro dog who needs constant attention, but she does enjoy following her people from room to room. Once she knows where you are, she'll quietly settle on the floor or a nearby bed and patiently wait while you finish whatever you're doing. She doesn't need to be in your lap— she just wants to be part of your day.   She's affectionate without being demanding, confident without being pushy, and has a wonderfully peaceful presence that's rare to find in such a young puppy.   Smart as They Come   Sticky Bun is incredibly intelligent and loves learning. She already knows 'sit,' 'down,' and 'sit up,' and she's currently working on 'shake' and 'stay.' She's also mastered dog puzzle toys that were originally purchased for the adult dogs in her foster home.   She enjoys chew toys, puzzles, and gentle enrichment activities that keep her busy, and she's very easy to redirect if she ever investigates something that's off-limits.   Dogs, Kids & Everyone Else   Sticky Bun absolutely loves other dogs, whether they're big or small. She enjoys playing chase in the yard and would likely be thrilled to have a canine companion, although she'd also be perfectly happy soaking up attention from her humans.   She's also been wonderful with children. At an adoption event, she patiently sat with a toddler who spent quite a while brushing and petting her— even attempting to brush her teeth with a rock! Sticky Bun simply soaked up the attention with remarkable patience and tolerance.   She's the kind of puppy who seems to make friends wherever she goes.   House Manners   Sticky Bun has excellent house manners, especially for such a young puppy.   She's fully housetrained and has been incredibly reliable in her foster home. She hasn't had an accident since her first day, when she was simply learning where to go. She'll even let you know if she needs to head outside.   She no longer needs a crate and can comfortably stay home for several hours without getting into trouble. She mostly sticks to chewing her toys and has shown very little interest in household items.   She's also impressively quiet. While her foster siblings may have plenty to say, Sticky Bun usually chooses not to join in. The only time you'll really hear her bark is during an especially fun play session, and she'll occasionally give a soft whine if she needs something.   Ideal Home   Sticky Bun would thrive with a family looking for an easygoing companion who enjoys being included in everyday life. She loves spending time outdoors, following her people around the house, learning new things, and relaxing nearby while life happens around her.   Like any Chow, she'll benefit from continued training and regular grooming as her beautiful coat grows in. She's already getting used to daily brushing and handles it beautifully.   Whether you have another playful dog or you're looking for your one-and-only, Sticky Bun has the kind of calm, loving temperament that's hard to find.   Why You'll Love Her   Sticky Bun has the face of a little lion, an adorable purple Chow tongue, and one of the sweetest personalities we've ever met. She even has a funny habit of 'redecorating' the house. One day while her family was out, she carefully gathered several backpacks from the laundry room and arranged them in a neat pile by her bed. She didn't chew them or damage them— she simply decided they belonged there!   She also loves lying completely flat on her belly, sprawled out in classic 'sploot' fashion, looking every bit like the oversized stuffed animal she resembles.   If you're hoping to skip the whirlwind puppy stage and bring home a gentle, smart, loyal companion with an old soul, Sticky Bun just might be your perfect match.   July 9, 2026, 6:31 pm

Story
Meet Timber Timber is a sweet, goofy Chow Chow boy with a big personality and an even bigger love for playtime. He’s friendly, fun-loving, and very much a free spirit — always ready to bounce into whatever adventure comes next. Timber came to us as a stray alongside a mixed group of little and big dogs, and he handled it like a champ. He’d do best in a home without cats, but if you’re looking for a playful, happy-go-lucky pup who lives life on his own terms, Timber might be your guy. ##2635754##

*Note: Jinhae is in Korea now but once adopted, he will be flying to San Francisco. For more info about the dog or the adoption application, please click here.BackgroundJinhae was found as a stray in the rural outskirts of Paju and was facing euthanasia before being rescued and taken into shelter care. He was fostered for about two months with a couple in an apartment, but was sadly lost during that time. Miraculously, he found his way back two months later, a true testament to his resilience and spirit. He is currently living with other dogs and waiting in the shelter for his forever home.Personality and SocializationJinhae is an affectionate and cuddly boy who loves nothing more than being close to the people he trusts. He may be a little shy at first, but once he warms up, he will shower you with kisses, lean into you, and wiggle his way under your arm asking for more pets. He tends to be more comfortable with women initially and may take a little longer to warm up to men but once he does, he is just as loving and playful with everyone. He simply needs a little patience and consistency.Jinhae gets along well with other dogs, particularly those who are gentle and respectful. He is not a fan of dogs that are overly hyper, dominant, or vocal, and will simply walk away rather than engage.BehavioursJinhae walks on leash well, though he may get a little nervous in new environments. When he feels unsure, he tends to freeze rather than react. He is fine with baths, grooming, and vet visits. He may get a little nervous, but he trusts his humans to handle things and has never shown any aggression. He experiences mild car sickness but nothing severe. He has no separation anxiety or destructive behaviour.Health and DietJinhae is spayed, up to date all vaccinated. Dewormed and microchiped. He had a dental scaling done in February 2026 and has had no other medical procedures or surgeries. He is currently in good health with no known conditions. Jinhae is currently on a standard dry kibble diet.Ideal HomeJinhae would thrive in a calm, patient home where he is given time to decompress and build trust at his own pace. A home with a woman would suit him best, though a gentle, patient man with dog experience would be absolutely fine too. A house in a quiet neighbourhood would be ideal, though he has also done well in an apartment setting. A busy downtown environment would not be the right fit for him.He can live with other dogs as long as introductions are done carefully. He would do best with adopters who understand the Jindo temperament, loyal, sensitive, and deeply bonded once trust is established. If you are looking for a dog who will become your shadow and your biggest fan, Jinhae is your boy.*Note: Jinhae is in Korea now but once adopted, he will be flying to San Francisco. For more info about the dog or the adoption application, please click here.

In fact, her favorite thing to do is simply spend time with her humans. She has a sweet and peaceful nature that makes her a pleasure to be around.BehavioursCalcium travels well in the car and has good manners during vet visits and baths. The veterinary staff even complimented her for being so calm and easy to handle. She is comfortable using both indoor pee pads and outdoor potty areas. While she is still gaining confidence with leash walking, she continues to make steady progress. Her future family should continue her training with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. She has been dewormed, receives monthly parasite prevention, and eats dry kibble. *Note: Currently, Gongdol is in Korea, but he will be arriving in San Francisco once adopted. For more info about him or the adoption application, please click here.BackgroundGongdol and his sister, Gongsoon, were rescued from a neglect situation in Hwaseong this spring. The young siblings had been surviving outdoors with little care, relying on scraps of human food while lacking proper shelter and consistent access to clean water. Thankfully, they were brought to safety and given the chance for a better future.Since his rescue, Gongdol has been staying at a boarding facility with other dogs. Although his early life was far from ideal, he has blossomed into a happy, loving young dog who is eager to enjoy everything life has to offer.Personality and SocializationGongdol is an outgoing and affectionate boy who genuinely enjoys being around people. He quickly makes friends and is comfortable meeting new faces, whether they are men, women, or visitors. His cheerful nature and loving personality make him a wonderful companion. He gets along well with canine companions and particularly enjoys playing with dogs who share his playful spirit. However, with careful and gradual introductions, he may be able to live peacefully with a feline companion.BehavioursGongdol is a pleasant young dog who has adapted well to everyday routines. He enjoys going for walks and is comfortable exploring the world around him. He travels well in the car and handles veterinary appointments and bath time calmly. Like many dogs his age, Gongdol enjoys playing with toys and may occasionally chew on them as part of normal puppy behaviour. He currently prefers outdoor bathroom breaks.Because Gongdol is still young and has not yet lived in a home environment, it is difficult to predict whether he may experience separation anxiety. A patient family that provides structure, guidance, and positive reinforcement will help him settle successfully into his new life.Health and DietGongdol is neutered, dewormed, fully vaccinated, and receives monthly parasite prevention. He is in good health, has no known allergies, and has not required any medical treatment beyond routine veterinary care. Gongdol eats kibble twice daily and has a healthy appetite.Ideal HomeGongdol would do best with a family that has the time and commitment to help a young dog continue learning and growing. A home where someone is around for much of the day, such as a person who works from home or is retired, would be especially beneficial as he adjusts to family life.He could thrive as the only dog in the home if he receives plenty of companionship and interaction from his people. He would also be happy sharing his home with another friendly dog who enjoys playtime and socializing. Gongdol has overcome a difficult start in life without losing his happy spirit.
