Story
https://foha.org/pet/ashland2021/ ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Hi, I’m Ashland — a gentle southern soul with endearing ears and a deep loyalty to those I trust. I’m all about peaceful walks, relaxing car rides, and cuddling up with my favorite humans. I walk beautifully on a harness and would love to be your nature-walking buddy. I’m shy at first, but once I feel safe, I become an affectionate companion who loves belly rubs and silly zoomies in the yard. Because I’m sensitive to new environments and fast introductions, I’m looking for a calm, adult-only home with an experienced adopter who understands dogs like me. I’ll thrive in a quiet, single-family home where I can be the only pet. HOW AM I WITH DOGS: I prefer to be the only pup in the home. Other dogs stress me out — I shine best solo! HOW AM I WITH CATS: Not a good match — please, no cats. HOW AM I WITH KIDS: I need a home without children. I KNOW THE FOLLOWING COMMANDS: Sit and Down — no treats required, just love! MY HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING: I do well in calm environments and adapt to routines. FOHA can provide more specifics. THINGS I LIKE: Long, quiet walks • Snuggling on the couch • Treats • Belly rubs • Riding in the car THINGS I DISLIKE: Crowds • Sudden noise • Fast introductions • City life • Other dogs on leash FOHA ADOPTION POLICIES AND PROCESS: https://foha.org/pet-adoption/adoption-policies/ ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: Spay/neuter, vaccines (rabies, distemper & Bordetella), 1-month access to Petcademy (training & behavior support), slip lead leash, 1 bag of starter food, 1-month flea/tick & heartworm preventatives, diagnostic testing, and additional medical care as needed.

Story
Meet sweet Cookie! Cookie arrived with her daughter, Oreo, from Texas, and both are ready to find their forever families. Cookie is about 7 years old and 35 lbs of beauty! Cookie is incredible smart and eager to learn. She is good with dogs, cats, and kids. She is house and crate trained. Cookie loves exploring outdoors and her favorite thing is to go on walks. While she enjoys playing with other dogs, she's also very happy to hang out with you while you for your work or watch a movie. Cookie can be a bit shy initially, so she would do best in a home with another dog to help her build her confidence. She'd love a family that will be patient and give her a chance to come around. Once she learns to trust, she'll be your best friend. Cookie is spayed and up-to-date on vaccines. The adoption fee for this dog is $425 which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Thank you for your interest in a Home At Last Sanctuary, Inc. animal.  STOP!!! READ!! The ENTIRE DESCRIPTION before you inquire. Do not call, email, txt, send an inquiry through any other website complete our online application FIRST. http://hals.rescuegroups.org/forms/form?formid=3016 Visit our official website(s) here HomeAtLastSanctuary.ORG or HALS.RescueGroups.ORG There is a complete our application only. Brody's Rabies Click Here Oftentimes, black and darker colored dogs languish in shelters much longer than lighter colored dogs. There are a lot of reasons for this. Potential adopters often rely on a “first look” with photos rescues and shelters have provided online of individual dogs, and dark colored dogs are more difficult to photograph. Some people may have an aversion towards animals with dark coats based on superstition or personal belief systems. And some people think black and dark colored dogs look more menacing than they actually are because their dark faces make it harder to read their facial expressions.  Unfortunately, these stigmas translate into real-life adoption rates and a lack of interest in these beautiful pups who deserve homes.  TAKE A SECOND LOOK AT BRODY We estimate Brody was born around October 2019. Please see attached file BrodyDogFactsReport.PDF to see exactly what mix of breeds is in Brody’s DNA.  We also ran the DNA Health assessment to see if there are any health risks based on his DNA. This will give a lot of insight to prospective adopters. What it will not tell you is what it is like living with Brody.  Brody came into the care of Home At Last Sanctuary October 2023 as an owner surrender.  He was adopted in Atlanta GA, after a few months moved to Boston MA, after a few months moved to Silver Spring MD with the parents of the adopter.  The person that adopted Brody moved once again to Los Angeles CA and left Brody behind. Brody was extremely insecure and was very reactive to other dogs on the walk and out in public.  He is doing much better and will need someone willing and able to continue nurturing confidence in Brody.  Brody has found comfort in a regular routine.  He knows where he fits in.  He is a very affectionate and loving dog. As of now, April 2025, Brody has share his foster home with eight other foster dogs.  Five have been adopted and he lives with two other dogs now.  There are links below to videos and photos of Brody and you can see him interact with the other dogs. He weighs about 37 pounds, is healthy, active, and playful dog.  He likes attention and will snuggle in for giving and getting love and attention.   He is good with other dogs after proper introduction.  He would not likely do well with cats.   He has not been evaluated around children.  It does seem as like he would do will with children that is respectful of dogs boundaries and adequate supervision from adults. Home At Last Sanctuary, Inc. offers certified previously owned dogs to be perfectly matched lifetime companions.  Brody's personal Webpage: Click or copy paste this link https://hals.rescuegroups.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=19883451 There are photos and videos on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.6624654667615858&type=3 Here is Brody's video playlist on YouTube https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6X5lkFtFSjOW9jfMwgBV9FH6z9x3P0ob&si=rstM6Fxd7yXM3f_m Brody has videos here too: https://www.facebook.com/HalSavesDogs/reels/ Please be aware.  We only place dogs within a one hour drive from Rockville MD.  When we have an approved application Brody will come for a home visit and meet and greet.  We will spend adequate time to determine if this is a good match.  We return another day once the new family has prepared to do an adoption. Story
Muffy came into my life after her previous owner passed, and she’s proven to be one of the sweetest, smartest dogs I’ve ever known. While she’s shy at first—she needs a few slow, patient meet-and-greets to warm up to new people—this loyal girl becomes a total lovebug once she trusts you. She’s very well-behaved, masters cues like “sit” and “come,” and adores daily walks or hikes. Muffy would thrive in calm, quiet home with 1-2 adults who understand her cautious nature. She’d do best in a home without cats or small children. She could enjoy a home with another friendly dog if it is the right fit (she can be particular about other dogs but there are some that she really loves). A securely fenced yard is a must, as she loves being outside. Muffy’s heart is full of love—she just needs the right person to give her time and space to share it. If you’re ready for a loyal companion who’ll repay your patience with endless devotion, Muffy is your girl.

Story
Meet Mora – The Sweet Girl Who’s Ready for a Second Chance at Love Mora’s story is one of resilience, patience, and hope. She’s a beautiful 4-year-old Jindo mix, weighing around 35 lbs — the perfect midsize companion. But her journey hasn’t been easy. Mora was just 10 months old when her original family gave her up, simply because they didn’t have enough time to care for her. Without hesitation, they left her at a commercial pet shop in Korea, where unwanted dogs are placed in hopes of finding another family — but for Mora, that day never came. She spent the next three long years in a small, confined space without a single adoption inquiry. No one came for her. No one asked about her. Yet Mora never lost hope. Finally, her fate changed when one of our amazing volunteers discovered her. Mora was pulled from the pet shop and brought to our safehouse, where she received the love and care she had been missing for so long. Her sweetness and gentle nature shined through instantly — she wasn’t broken, just waiting for someone to see her worth. In December, Mora made her way to the U.S. and has been living with a foster family ever since. This transition has been a whole new world for her, and she’s adjusting beautifully to life in a home. She loves her daily walks and doesn’t pull on the leash. She’s smart, eager to learn, and has already mastered basic commands like sit, stay, and down. She’s polite in the house, learns quickly when gently corrected, and has a heart full of love to give. She loves to go to the dog park and run with another dog. Sometimes she nips the other dog lightly trying to get them to play with her, but the foster mom is trying to redirect her to find better ways to initiate the play differently. (She is making a good progress!) Like many rescue dogs, Mora can be a bit shy the first day or two when meeting new people. But once she realizes she’s safe, her walls come down, and her affectionate, sweet personality shines. She’ll wag her tail, nudge you for pets, and look into your eyes with nothing but pure love and gratitude. In her foster home, she barks briefly when a stranger enters the house, but she quickly stops when reassured. She’s learning that the world isn’t scary anymore — it’s full of love, and she’s finally starting to believe it. Mora will be perfect for a family or an individual that are physically active, and she will make a perfect hiking partner. She enjoys outdoors, and adapts very well to a new environment. When she is at home with her foster family, she is pretty quiet. She does bark when she hears a door bell or sees unexpected visitors, but stops quickly. What Mora wants more than anything is a family who will never give up on her again. She’s not asking for much — just a warm bed, daily walks, and a human who will love her forever. After spending over three years of her life being overlooked, we know she’s destined for something special — and we hope that special family is you. Mora has been spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and is ready to begin her new life. If you’re someone who understands the profound joy of rescuing a dog — of watching them transform, blossom, and heal — then Mora is waiting for you. She will return your love tenfold, and the bond you build with her will be unlike any other. We often say that the most incredible dogs are the ones who’ve had a difficult start but never gave up hope. Mora is one of those dogs. She’s been waiting far too long for her happy ending — and we believe her perfect family is out there. Could it be you? If you’d like to apply to adopt Mora, please fill out an application here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1u_YTSKWFVkNYLUcJbCVvfyQnguL-gHi8JGG59XOIIog/edit Meet-and-greets are available upon request once your application has been reviewed. We require a completed application, a brief interview (by phone or in-person), and a virtual or photo home check. Please note: We have a 30-mile radius adoption policy from Fairfax, VA. The adoption fee for Mora is $650, which helps cover her medical care, travel, and preparation for adoption
