Story
Meet Winston, one of our incredible Parvo Puppy Survivors!
Winston is an incredibly handsome Heeler mix, although we cannot say for certain exactly what breeds make up his family tree. He was one of a litter of 11 puppies who came to BENCHS from another shelter, ready for the next chapter of their lives. Unfortunately, that chapter quickly became a fight none of us expected when the litter became sick with parvovirus.
Winston fought, Winston survived, and now you would never know what this little guy has been through. He is incredibly healthy, happy, silly, and finally ready for the part we have been waiting for: finding his forever home!
Winston currently lives with several of his siblings and has never gone a single day of his life without the companionship of other dogs. Because of that, he has had an incredible amount of early socialization with other puppies. He knows how to wrestle, play, communicate, share his space, and settle in alongside his canine friends. His personality is really beginning to shine, and he is getting funnier and sillier by the day. Winston is a joyful, curious puppy who seems genuinely excited to take on the world.
Our best guess is that Winston and his siblings have some Heeler, or Australian Cattle Dog, in their family tree. Heelers are incredibly intelligent, energetic, loyal working dogs that were bred to have a job and stay busy. They tend to thrive with families who enjoy being active and are willing to provide plenty of physical exercise, mental enrichment, training, and opportunities to use that very smart brain. Winston is looking for an active indoor home that is excited about raising an intelligent, energetic puppy and continuing his training and socialization as he grows.
Potential adopters should also understand that herding breeds can come with some uniquely "herding dog" behaviors. Heelers were bred to control the movement of livestock, and those instincts can sometimes show up in family life as chasing, circling, or nipping at heels, particularly when children are running, squealing, or playing. These behaviors do not necessarily mean a dog is being aggressive, but they can be overwhelming for very young children and require consistent training and appropriate outlets. Because Winston is still a young puppy and we do not yet know exactly how strong those instincts will become as he matures, families with very small children should carefully consider whether an energetic herding breed puppy is the right match for their household.
Winston has already overcome an enormous obstacle in his young life. Now the scary days are behind him, and he is healthy, thriving, wonderfully silly, and ready to experience all of the things he fought so hard to get the chance to experience.

BENCHS puppy adoption fees are $500 plus tax. Winston’s adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, dewormer, flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention, distemper boosters, Bordetella vaccination, and rabies vaccination.
And these puppies don’t head home empty handed! Winston will also go home with a gallon bag of food, leash, collar, harness, tote bag, blanket, toys, and some other little freebies to help him get settled into his new home.
Best of all, his adoption also includes a professional family photo to capture the beginning of his new life with the people lucky enough to call him theirs!
