Story
Meet Bear.  Bear and his siblings were part of an unwanted litter living beneath the front porch of a rural Tennessee home. Concerned neighbors noticed the puppies were not confined and that no one was caring for them. Fearing for their safety, especially after learning they were not being fed regularly, a neighbor intervened and rescued the puppies just before snow and ice swept through Middle Tennessee.   The puppies are now healthy, happy, and ready for their forever families to find them. Bear is a wonderful guy.  He is the biggest puppy in the litter and a true gentle giant.  Bear is a mix of Collie, Australian Cattle Dog and Blue Heeler.  He is 13 weeks old and just a love bug.  Bear will follow  you around until you pick him up and give him a big kiss.  After that he is happy to join his siblings in a game of ball or tug of war.  He really enjoys playing with his brothers and sister as well as the other dogs in his foster home.  This big boy even sleeps with the resident cats. Bear is working on potty training and has it almost mastered.  He just needs to remember why he went outside. He  is sometimes to busy wondering where you are to get 'things' done.  Bear is crate-trained and spends time in an inside pen when no one is home to watch him.   Bear is neutered, up to date on all his vaccinations, and microchipped.  To be considered for his forever family and to request an application, please get in touch with Vivienne at vivienneajames@gmail.com.  APPROVED APPLICATION AND ADOPTION FEE REQUIRED.  (Bear is currently in Tennessee and can be transported north upon adoption.)    February 3, 2026, 5:45 pm

Story
Riley, thought to be born in January or February of 2015 is a tricolor, smooth coat, collie/border collie mix with some brindle markings on his legs. He has experienced 2 failed adoptions. He was adopted from us when he was about 6 months old and was returned to us 3 years later when the male member of the adoptive family, who had Alzheimer’s, became abusive toward him. In time he began developing his self-confidence again and began to lose his fear of men. Even though he was still somewhat leery of men he didn’t know, he would actually seek attention from men with whom he was familiar. He got along well with the dogs in his foster home but he behaved aggressively toward any new foster dog that periodically come in. He is not good with cats as he showed aggression toward the clinic cat at our vet’s office. Riley was adopted a second time, but after a year of trying different techniques to manage Riley’s difficult behaviors his second adopter felt that she could no longer handle him and once again Riley was returned to us. He left us weighing 55 pounds and returned, markedly overweight, at 78 pounds. He is now back to a healthy weight of 55 pounds. Riley has had extensive training. He is quite smart and learns quickly. He rides well in a car and walks well on a leash unless he meets a dog while out on the walk, in which case he will pull and act aggressively. Riley is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is being kept on heartworm and flea and tick prevention to maintain his good health. Riley is currently in Arkansas. His adoption donation is $415 which includes the $1655 transport fee. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. We sometimes receive a lot of interest on an animal and can't always reply to each email in a timely manner. An application does not obligate you to adopt from us, but it does show that you are serious about the adoption process. Please remember we are all volunteers. After you submit your application, please allow a few days for a volunteer to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked and a volunteer with determine if it is the best match for you and the animal. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We match up the best home for the animal, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved a volunteer with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the animal you are interested in

Story
Name: Ariella Age: 3 years Breed: Cattle dog/Terrier mix Size: 61 pounds Adoption Application: https://forms.gle/nuKXoMu6gjS5DhFm8 Contact: transport@hssm.org Ariella is a stunning terrier heeler mix who is fully grown at three years old and full of personality. She is believed to be potty trained and has already proven she knows how to live in a home. Ariella does great with other dogs and older kids, making her an easy and enjoyable companion. Her previous family loved her but sadly could not keep her due to her medium size. Ariella’s biggest flaw is that she is a little too affectionate — she’s a proud hugger and an enthusiastic kisser who loves being close to her people. She also has a serious love for water and is always ready to splash, play, or dive into fun whenever she gets the chance. Sweet, social, and full of charm, Ariella is ready to bring joy, laughter, and lots of love to a family lucky enough to call her their own. She is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and already spayed. Ariella's $300 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, up to date vaccines, microchip AND transport fee to a location near you. We currently have transportation to CT, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA, GA, and TN. Please email transport@hssm.org for more information on transports! --> If you are interested in adopting Ariella please fill out our online application here: (https://forms.gle/nuKXoMu6gjS5DhFm8 - Dog). A staff member will reach out if your application is approved to discuss the adoption process. No fenced in yard required, and YES - we adopt to families with children! The adoption will not be final until the adoption contract is discussed and signed. Transports are arranged for specific dates, typically within 1-3 weeks of approving your application. Adopters will meet at a designated meeting spot to pick up their new companions. For further information, please first fill out the application referenced above. **Due to import regulations we are not able to adopt to MA or RI residents at this time.
